English: Wally Schirra's Charlie Russell Riders patch, on display at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana.
Walter Marty Schirra, Jr., was an American astronaut who was one of the original "Mercury Seven" astronauts. Schirra is the only American to have flown in three space programs (Mercury, Gemini, Apollo), the fifth American in space, the ninth human being in space, and the first person to be in space on three separate occasions. The Charlie Russell Riders is a group of men who meet in Montana each fall for recreation. Schirra was a veteran member of the group (joining in 1984), and the Charlie Russell Riders Foundation generously supports the Museum of the Rockies. Schirra visited the museum several times. The two bullet casings are from Schirra's funeral, held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on May 22, 2007. |
