Description
Deutsch: Bünde, Kreis Herford, Nordrhein-Westfalen: Denkmal Steinmeister und Wellensiek in der Bünder Fußgängerzone. Die Zigarrenfabrikanten haben maßgeblich zum Ruf der Stadt als Zigarrenstadt beigetragen. Neben den beiden Fabrikanten ist auch ein Schubwagen abgebildet, der mit einem Tabakbündel beladen ist. Während Steinmeister wie ein typischer vornehm gekleideter Fabrikant seiner Zeit abgebildet ist, erscheint Wellensiek als fast schon einfach gekleideter Arbeiter, obwohl er auch zu den reichsten Männern Ostwestfalens gezählt haben dürfte. Beide rauchen Zigarre.


1843 begann der in Bremen in der Kunst des Zigarrenmachens ausgebildete Zigarrenmacher Tönnies Wellensiek mit der Herstellung von Zigarren in Ennigloh. Der Legende nach ging der junge Tönnies Wellensiek mit einer Kiepe nach Bremen ging und kehrte von dort mit 75 Pfund Tabak beladen zu Fuß nach Bünde zurück. Beim Zigarrendrehen unterstützte ihn anfangs seine Ehefrau. Später wurde Friedrich August Steinmeister Partner seiner 1856 gegründeten Zigarrenfabrik Steinmeister & Wellensiek.
