| Description |
English: Down express ascending from Wellington to Whiteball Summit. View eastward, towards Wellington, Taunton and Bristol/London; ex-GWR West of England main line. On a Summer Saturday in the 1950s there was a constant procession of expresses to the West Country battling up here on an insufficient double-track bottleneck between Taunton and Exeter. This is 4-6-0 No. 4088 'Dartmouth Castle' (built in 1925) with the 07.30 Newcastle - Paignton, full of families with small children suffering an 11-hour ordeal - but which in the days before the M5 was built would have taken double that time by road. |
