| Description |
English: Zigzag through the foothills of Purple Mountain and the Gap of Dunloe. Here the narrow road (the width of a horse and cart) bends crazily around the lower ridges in its approach to beautiful Purple Mountain (An Sliabh Corcra) which is the backdrop of this picture. This magnificent mountain gets its name from "the colour of the shivered slate on its surface" (Samuel Lewis 1837). Standing at 2730 ft (832 metres), its left slope drops steeply down to a col which marks an important pass through these mountains called the 'Gap of Dunloe' http://www.strollingguides.co.uk/books/kerry/places/dunloe1.php 24017.
Immediately to the left of the Gap of Dunloe, on the edge of the photo, are the lower slopes of the Hill of the Bulls (Cnoc na dTarbh), also known as the Nose (Srón), which rises to 2150 ft (655 metres). This 'hill' is part of the range of mountains famously known as Macgillycuddy's Reeks (Na Cruacha Dubha), among which is the highest mountain in Ireland at over 3400 ft (1036 metres) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrmqiSbCh6g&NR=1&feature=fvwp |
