Help:"Nominate for deletion" toolbox link

The "Nominate for deletion" toolbox link is a tool provided as a part of the Commons:Deletion requests policy.

On every file description page's toolbox, usually located on the left part of the computer screen, a link named "Nominate for deletion" is provided.

You can nominate the media file for deletion by clicking on that link : your internet browser will first generate a popup dialog box, with the following question :

Why do you want to nominate this file for deletion ?

Please write your reasons there. As this popup dialog box's size is quite small, you might not be able to read all the words of your message at the same time, so that you might prefer to write your message on a separate text editing tool on your computer and copy paste it from there. Wiki syntax such as [[ ]] is accepted.

A convenient way to explain brievely the problem might be to refer to a specific Wikimedia Commons policy. For deleting an image of contemporary artwork outdoors in France, you might refer to [[COM:FOP#France]], but the file's uploader might not be familiar with Wikimedia Commons' acronyms, so please add a few explanations with simple words.

After you click on "OK", your internet browser will automatically :

  • Edit the file description page, adding {{delete}}
  • Open a new tab or a new window, creating a deletion request subpage
  • Open the uploader's talk page in a second new tab or window, adding {{idw}}
  • Open a third new tab or window to list your request on the deletion requests' list of the day

Important: If you use an internet browser with a popup blocking tool, such as Firefox, you must add "commons.wikimedia.org" (without quotes) on the popup blocking tool's white list. Otherwise, the new tabs will be blocked. On Firefox the white list is located in tools --> options --> contents --> exceptions.
