The Iron Cross is considered to be the Prussian national symbol, dating back to the freedom war against Napoleon. It was used as the symbol of the Military of Germany, as well as a German military decoration. As a decoration it is only awarded in times of war (to this date there are crosses from 1813, 1870, 1914, 1939).
