Ivan Susanin was a Russian peasant, who, during the Polish occupation of Russia, led Poles away from the hiding place of Tsar Mikhail Romanov, and was killed for this eventually. He was romanticized as a folk hero and portrayed in stage and paintings, most famously in the XIX century opera of the same name by Mikhail Glinka.
