M. sylvanus is tailless and for this reason it is also known as the Barbary Ape. These monkeys are the only macaques found outside Asia, and the only non-human primate species living freely in Europe. Barbary macaques inhabit the oak forests of northern Africa, as well as the Rock of Gibraltar. It is still unknown if the Gibraltar macaques were introduced by humans, or are descendants of a previously widespread European population of monkeys.
