English: Robert Carlyle Byrd (born 1917) is a U.S. Senator from West Virignia since 1959. Now he is the longest serving senator and democratic member of this body. From 1977 until 1981 and again from 1987 until 1989 he was majority leader (minority leader from 1981 until 1987). He was also president pro tempore of the Senate from 1989 until 1995, for 17 days in January 2001 and again from June 2001 until January 2003. Now he is president pro tem again since Jan 2007
