Saint Hedwig of Andechs (1174 - October 1243; German: Hedwig von Schlesien auch Hedwig von Andechs, Polish: Święta Jadwiga Śląska) was born at Kloster Andechs, Bavaria, the daughter of Berthold III, Count of Tyrol and Duke of Carinthia and Istria (Andechs-Meran), and his wife Agnes.

Hedwig is the patron saint of Brandenburg, Berlin, Silesia and its capital Wroclaw, of Trzebnica, the Diocese of Görlitz, of Andechs and of Kraków.

St. Hedwig's Cathedral is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Berlin.

Hedwig was married to :en:Henry I the Bearded / :pl:Henryk I Brodaty. She is the aunt of Saint Elisabeth of Hungary aka de:Elisabeth von Thüringen. Hedwig gave all her stuff to the poor and so she´s often illustrated barefoot, holding a little church in her arms.
