The first of the General maps doesn't resemble the shape of Clipperton Island at all! The satellite and historical images are in agreement with the second of the General maps diagrams. It looks like the first diagram is of some other atoll and has been mislabeled. Prisoner of Zenda (talk) 01:55, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

History[edit]

This is at odds with the Wikipedia article, which states that CI was discovered in 1711 by the French, who named it Île de la Passion. John Clipperton was an English pirate and privateer after whom the atoll is currently named. "It became French in 1855": the Wikipedia article states that "on 17 Nov. 1858 Napoleon III annexed it as part of the French colony of Tahiti". Prisoner of Zenda (talk) 04:28, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
