Thespis, the first, now lost, collaboration between W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan premièred on December 26, 1871. A Christmas entertainment, it was not expected to last, but due to the enduring popularity of their later collaborations, such as H.M.S. Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance, reconstructions of Thespis have become increasingly popular since the late 20th century.
