Media bearing this template are added to Category:Media requiring renaming if at least one parameter is given (which should be the desirable filename). Used without any parameter, the template tags the file in Category:Media renaming requests needing target.

[edit] Usage

Add the following anywhere on the File: page that needs renaming:

{{rename|new name.ext|(optionally plus a reason)}}

This is for media only. For galleries, categories, and templates use {{move}}.
If you have already uploaded the same file under a new name, use {{bad name}} instead of {{rename}}.
Do not include the "File:" prefix, but do include the media file's extension.
Do not use named parameters 1= and 2=.
New names that include / are invalid; please do not use them

It has been suggested that this media object be renamed to "File:New name.jpg" or another more suitable name for the following reason: Misspelled.

This request will be dealt with by an administrator . New names that include a slash (/) are invalid; please do not use them.
Please check if the rename meets one of the valid reasons on Commons:File renaming before you move the file.
Before you move the file, please add {{universal replace|Rename|New name.jpg|reason=[[Commons:File renaming|File renamed]] : Misspelled.}} to User:CommonsDelinker/commands (Quick adding) and save afterwards.

Do the suggested rename

and tags the file as Category:Media requiring renaming.

{{rename|A better name.png}} creates:
