Welsh[edit]

Could someone add Welsh (cy) to the template. Thanks. Tigershrike 21:14, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Done -- Bryan (talk to me) 15:21, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Finnish[edit]

Please also add Finnish (fi). --Para 14:57, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

And Serbian (sr), please? :) --Matija 14:21, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Question about "main" languages[edit]

I'd like to know based on which criteria English, German, French and Spanish are the "main" language in this template. I can understand the English language position, but why the other three were chosen? Why Spanish and not Chinese? Why German and not Arabic? Why French and not Portuguese? Is there a objective criterium that I'm not seeing? Dantadd 02:45, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Well, it's been two months and nobody answered the question, then I'm gonna put just English in the top, and the other languages will be put in the alphabetical order, since I can not understand the "preferences". Dantadd 15:46, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for reducing the template. The languages don't seem to have anything to do with the respective Wikipedias' size. Dustsucker 13:32, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Basque[edit]

I'd like Basque (eu) to be added. Thanks. - Keta 16:42, 1 September 2007 (UTC) {{Editprotected}}

Collapsible-ness[edit]

Could someone make this collapsible? It really takes up quite a lot of space on many image description pages. NauticaShades 12:51, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I totally second this. howcheng {chat} 19:00, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
That’s not a bad idea; the default collapsed state should display the description in the user’s language and a [show all] link to expand the box. (But note that the collapsing will not work when viewing the image description page on another project (e.g. w:File:Tugboat diagram-en edit.svg.) --Mormegil (talk) 19:27, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

sentence still in english[edit]

The first sentence is still in english. Should the template be converted to use autotranslate? Esby (talk) 11:49, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

It has been fixed before your attempt. The template is now autotranslated. If you want a localized version, follow the instructions. --Mormegil (talk) 14:26, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
No. If you look to current fav.image ([1]) in the wiki-commons, you can see english first under any local language settings.--Камень (talk) 17:15, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
No. When I look at the image, I see Czech first: see [2]. Currently, there are only three language versions of this template, which is why in most languages, there is only an English version displayed. If you want a version in your language, go ahead and create it. --Mormegil (talk) 18:30, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Ok-ok :) Now i understood.--Камень (talk) 19:05, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Done! Thanks for support.--Камень (talk) 19:25, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Collapse other translations?[edit]

Now the template is autotranslated, it might be a good idea to collapse the rest of caption translations (if there is a caption in the user’s language). What do you think? --Mormegil (talk) 14:26, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

I have prepared the autocollapsibility. Append ?withJS=MediaWiki:Collapse-Potd.js to a URL to see that in action, e.g. [3], [4]. Any bugreports, improvement ideas etc. are welcome! --Mormegil (talk) 21:13, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
Automatic collapsing of other translations implemented (even though totally different than presented above). Check it out, any error reports, comments, etc. are welcome. --Mormegil (talk) 16:05, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Maltese translation[edit]

Wrong grammatical tense[edit]

Hi, the template uses the wrong tense when it is used for a picture of the day and the day is still in the future. Can anybody please fix this? --Cepheiden (talk) 15:29, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Template broken[edit]

This template is broken. I can only see the English caption when there is no Swedish caption (my language preference). And if there is a Swedish caption I see no caption at all. And the link to display more language has disappeared. /Ö 10:51, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

I know. <rant>It is just a result of an unholy mess which is Commons’ JS scripts, maintained by everyone and noone. Somebody someday decided it is a good idea to add the multilingual description drop-down box (terrible construct as of itself, and messing with the whole page) everywhere. Which broke stuff which already cared for its own internationalization.</rant> Look around on the page, you should see the language drop-down box somewhere near the top, try “See all”, it might help. --Mormegil (talk) 13:26, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Why does the picture of the day needs an extra description page that is actually indepandant from the actual picture description? Esby (talk) 16:18, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Because there is no way (well, no easy way, at the very least) you could extract description from an image description page in MediaWiki? Don’t forget an image description page is just a page like any other, MediaWiki is not able to extract even the (generally much more machine-readable) license information. (Another reason could be that the image description on the image page can contain very long and detailed description which you don’t want to use as a thumbnail caption.) --Mormegil (talk) 18:25, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
I see what you mean for the description. It's somehow intented to be a short description.
I also see one quick way to fix the issue for now: User:Esby/test3 is a modified copy of Template:Picture_of_the_day/layout, which disables (Note: I commented out the html code, if the fix were to be applied in the long run, it would probably be best to just remove the commented code) the primary language displaying, the hidden box and rely on the multingual javascript to do the job. That might not be what you'd consider the best, but it's still better than displaying nothing. a preview of how it looks like is available here: User:Esby/test1.
Anyway I am going to notify user:DieBuche of the issue.
Esby (talk) 20:51, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Back to normal now. You might need to clear your cache--DieBuche (talk) 12:43, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Wrong 0-padding in day[edit]

File:Laura Viherva sm.JPG#Summary links the featured date "6 February 2013" to Template:Potd/2013-02#06 instead of the correct Template:Potd/2013-02#6. It's the same for all 1-digit days. They get a leading 0 but none of the linked pages I examined have the leading 0 in the section heading. It's caused by {{padleft:{{{day}}}|2|0}} in Template:Picture of the day/en and the other languages. It should just be {{{day}}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:34, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
