Reason[edit]

This template will get more powerfull if the uploader can use it and also give a reason why it should not be overwritten. Look f.i. at Category:Photochrom pictures in their original state where a description is added to explain why they should not be overwritten. People are more inclined to respect a reasoned request, then just a general request. Also, the phrase "original file" should be replaced with "this file", because it are not just the original files that need not to be overwritten. Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 07:48, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • I aggree that "this file" is a more useful phrase. Better to keep it specific to the page it's posted on. Generalizations may be reached through the Commons:Overwriting existing files link that's include. However, COM:OVERWRITE also has a clear {{Guideline}} template at the top. Therefore I feel that "(Please note: this template is not yet part of an official guideline or policy)" overstates the point and perhaps boldfacing implies too much emphasis. I'll attempt to rephrase in a manner which respects the spirit of Jan Arkesteijn's having placed it and which also avoids implying that editors are free to ignore the template at will (a risk I see in the current version). I'll try to work in phrasing which encourages those who use the template to expound on their reasons for doing so and, hence, directly address the concern Jan Arkesteijn raised previously. --Kevjonesin (talk) 18:18, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I made the changes mentioned above.[edit]

In the english language sections I changed to "this file" in the opening and rephrased closing note along the lines I mentioned above. Used Google Translate to change the closing notes of all parts but not of non-english "this file" in the opening part. Also added some font changes only in the english parts. Please, fluent speakers of the other languages are encouraged to adapt the changes made to the english text and to double check if Google Translate made sensible translation to the closing note. Thanks, --Kevjonesin (talk) 19:32, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Modification of metadata[edit]

The template includes the instructions additional descriptive text may be added by Wikimedians to the template below with the "description=" parameter, but please do not modify the other fields. I propose that this language be removed. There is no reason that Commons should be saddled with bad metadata simply because an institution has bad metadata - and almost every GLAM mass upload has metadata issues. The vast majority of institutions do not have an effective feedback system for fixing metadata errors, especially not at the scale at which Commons users may find them. Removing this language would allow this template to serve its real purpose - indicating images that should not be overriden - rather than attempt to enforce a meaningless metadata restriction.
