Quick adding to User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands aiming for the Image replace requests section[edit]

I would like to propose an edit in the text

"Before you move the file, please add {{universal replace|Rename|New name.jpg|reason=[[Commons:File renaming|File renamed]]: Misspelled.}}~~~~

to User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands (Quick adding)". Instead of http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:CommonsDelinker/commands&action=edit&function=replace&oldimage=Rename&newimage=New_name.jpg&replace_reason=File_renamed_%28Misspelled.%29 it should be aiming to the specific section Image replace requests. This would save some scrolling time. --Mattes (talk) 12:52, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

✓ Done, temporarily. A javascript should be running in place of the link, but we're still working on that. ZooFari 14:36, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Link to add on unused files[edit]

The template now has a link to 1) move file and replace usage and 2) decline move. What about a link for moving without adding a redirect or replace usage? --MGA73 (talk) 21:09, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

And a link to remove redundant rename suggestions. --MGA73 (talk) 08:47, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Please use edit description[edit]

Please use edit description when editing this template. That makes it easier to find out what has been changed + find out what went wrong when something suddenly does not work. Perhaps some edits should be tested in a sandbox. At the moment the "Move unused files" does not work. --MGA73 (talk) 17:37, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

...because script was changed so the link "move and replave" can also move without replacing. Here an edit description or a better name for link would have helped ;-) --MGA73 (talk) 17:56, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Where does the template go?[edit]

I'm new to the administrative side of Commons, but have done a lot of work on WP. From that, I'm assuming that the rename request is to be placed on the talk (discussion) page. Is that correct? Would that be a useful piece of info to be added to the template documentation? Schwede66 21:00, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

No, the template goes at the top of the description page. Very few templates on Commons are designed to be placed on the talk page. Huntster (t @ c) 21:33, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response. I've fixed my rename request accordingly. Schwede66 02:35, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Remove .ext from advise[edit]

Hi, I suggest removing the .ext from the suggested name. So {{rename|new name|reason}} instead of {{rename|new name.ext|reason}}. The template automatically fills in the extension when it is not there and manually adding extensions to the template can easily lead to mistakes. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 15:51, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

While implementing my suggestion I noticed a negative side to the change, so I decided not to do it after all. If tou take away the .ext the red link provided to the user also does not have the .ext and is therefore always red, if the file.ext already exist or not. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 17:45, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

It would be great if we were to compensate for the misleading redlink if the target exists and the user did not specify an extension, specified an uppercase extension, or did anything else that is otherwise automatically compensated for.   — Jeff G. ツ 16:12, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Ufff. MediaWikis string manipulation methods are very limited. But I will try something. -- RE rillke questions? 16:49, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
As I expected, likely impossible. You may revert to this version and test (e.g. add {{Commons:Sandbox|TestnameWithoutExtension}} to a file) but if either the old or new file names are >100 chars or contain unknown chars, it fails. -- RE rillke questions? 19:00, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
Is that any worse than the current situation?   — Jeff G. ツ 00:54, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Autotranslation?[edit]

Is it possible to have autotranslation on this template ? Would someone be willing to do it (I think I would break anything if I dared touching it ;-) ? Jean-Fred (talk) 22:29, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Template:Rename/notarget[edit]

Template:Rename needs target has been replaced with Template:Rename/notarget, but this doesn't work well because {{translated tag|cleanup}} wouldn't work where there is slash "/" in the template name. --miya (talk) 00:42, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

So I replaced "Rename/notarget" with "Rename needs target" so that we can use autotranslation.--miya (talk) 04:43, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

revert[edit]

Could you not just revert [1] the edit but instead find a soultion to the problem that the categories with the misplaced template vanish and are not dealt with! And say something substantial about the commons delinker problem! --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 15:48, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

When moving categories, the delinker (and category bot too I guess) removes the Move template, which saves a substantial amount of work and avoids categories in Category:Requested moves (all) that are already moved. The last couple of months, we never had problems with "misplaced" rename templates in categories. This is compliant with its documentation: for media only. When used on a category, its displays a proper message (please use {{Move}}). --Foroa (talk) 16:20, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

How would you know you don't have a problem with displaced rename templates? --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 16:23, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

The feature has been enabled sometime. After the restore (and after bot change to move), I checked a couple of times using this. There is one now. --Foroa (talk) 16:40, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
And why is it not possible to just make a not in the template to exchange it for "move"? --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 16:57, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
As explained above, SieBot don't remove it autimatically, so creates significant extra word and stale move requests. --Foroa (talk) 05:56, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
It would be great if rename and move templates redirect to the same template, but as long as SieBot does not implement it (it exceptionally doesn't work sometimes, it seems to depend on its position or format), there is nothing gained. --Foroa (talk) 06:08, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

It does not create extra work unless you blindly execute the move request without checking the reason and always keep the old category as a redirect. I assume neither is true. Additionaly if the template is rearly misplaced it obviously does create only a small amount of additional work to exchange the template. If it is often misplaced than the current "solution" is shit because a lot of move request are never noted. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 06:57, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

It has been enabled for a couple of months. In the end, we've got to manually remove around 100 to 150 instances in the destination categories (Siebot removes de {{Move}} on the fly), so there is no need to edit the destination categories (why I reverted it in May). The down side is that after about 3 months, we have one single misplaced one, so the conclusions are easy. See Commons:Bots/Work_requests/Archive_5#Rename_template. --Foroa (talk) 09:09, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

File talk page warning?[edit]

Is there some way to have the template check if has been applied to a file talk page rather than the file page, and issue a warning? — Cheers, JackLee talk 05:22, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

The template should at least categorize into a maintenance cat when it is put on a file talk page. And it also should display a warning. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 11:18, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the recent update to the template, which seems to be working (there are now 48 files in "Category:Incomplete media renaming requests"). I suggest the following changes to the warning notice: "{{Rename}} should be placed on the file description page itself, not its talk page. Please move the tag to File:Bcbj98pzysx60o2hmcu.jpg." Thanks. — Cheers, JackLee talk 05:07, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
It looks good. Thanks for making the changes. — Cheers, JackLee talk 17:58, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
No problem. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 17:59, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Template appears to have a problem[edit]

In this edit I think I used the template properly, but the reason for the rename does not show up when the template is rendered. Not sure what's up. -Pete F (talk) 16:36, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Since there's an equal sign in your 'reason' (inside the link), you should have added 2= before it:
{{rename|...|2=reason}}
Capmo (talk) 16:59, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Point to talk page in template text[edit]

I think this template should warn potential renamers/movers to check the talk page to see if there's discussion about other possible names. I just ran across an instance of this template (on a File page) that I disagreed with (both the suggested new name and the justification for it), so I wanted to point people to the talk page to see my objections, but I found that I couldn't make any edit to the File page without the original suggestion being attributed to me instead of the original user. So I just had to remove his suggestion and replace it with my own (mentioning the prior suggestion and pointing to the talk page in the process). If the template had included a warning to check the talk page before renaming, I wouldn't have had to take such a drastic action. - dcljr (talk) 20:36, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Give template named parameters[edit]

bad. I am going to change it. -- RE rillke questions? 10:49, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

I agree that this template is asking for some enhancements; just remember that it is used by one or more bots, and changing it may break the bots' functionality or, even worse, produce undesirable results (as bad renames). Capmo (talk) 15:17, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, I was referring to BetacommandBot, but it seems to be inactive now. It made a couple of faulty renamings in the past, due to its inability to properly get numbered parameters from this template. Capmo (talk) 17:21, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Bug with parameter number 2[edit]

There is a problem with the second parameter (the reason of renaming) because it is always printed twice. I tried to fix it but I could'nt. Does anyone have a solution ? Udufruduhu (talk) 12:39, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

What interface language are you using? -- RE rillke questions? 12:42, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

And where did you see the reason twice (example file)? Thanks. -- RE rillke questions? 12:50, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
I noticed it when I asked for renaming File:CyrileLowe1913.png. But I can see it in the template itself: there is <Reason specified here> written twice in the box, see screen capture. Udufruduhu (talk) 12:59, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I think I could correct it. It would be great if you could update the french text (use the english text as the template). Merci! -- RE rillke questions? 13:18, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Few problems[edit]

Sometimes the rename suceeds but the code is unable to carry on the last two steps (removing the template, posting on commonsdelinker). This happens when the target rename is filtered, ie how .JPG becomes .jpg

The code then complains how it cannot move page onto itself like here: [2]

Also consider the case where a page is moved but the template wasn't removed. There should be a button to remove the template and check if entry was posted to commons delinker and post if it hasn't been. [3]

Also it would be useful if template offered check boxes for movers to click on for criteria that applies to the move. Currently the only justification that automatically shows is what the users provided. An even better option is for the template to take parameters for the requesters to choose.

-- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 09:38, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

I agree that it could be a good idea to have the file mover select one of the valid reasons to move a file. Often moves are done without a reason added. File movers and admins should know "the rules" but new users can't all be expected to know them so I do not think it should be a must for them to choose between reasons. If file mover or admin can't see the reason to move they should just say no to move the file. --MGA73 (talk) 10:48, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
That happens for me on most moves using my phone.   — Jeff G. ツ 16:16, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Perhaps there should be two fields, one the move reason and the other "notes" for any additional comments. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 17:49, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
I attempted a fix that I think shouldn't break the automation. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 18:32, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
Now you just have to update some instructions. Also, param 3 is not passed anymore, which was used on Template:Rename/layout when using this template in categories.
Then, please update the documentation, Commons:Deletion requests and pull-in translations for "You have to specify ...". -- RE rillke questions? 18:45, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
Could I ask you to do all that? :) -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 19:53, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
Most work is done. Now you just have to translate und update these few templates. Thanks for volunteering. -- RE rillke questions? 13:20, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
I am not sure what needs to be done really. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 18:38, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
Should the numbers be mandatory input? It is optional currently and I was hoping people would use it voluntarily but especially IPs seem to avoid using them. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 17:35, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
You can't expect the whole word is speaking English. Maybe they simply don't understand or didn't notice the difference. Should we enable the new move-link for IPs, too? -- RE rillke questions? 18:00, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
That's why the input is a number which can be auto-translated to many languages. A number has no language. I agree that many people indeed did not notice the difference probably because the template currently does not declare non-numbered submissions as "incomplete". I propose they should be treated as incomplete. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 19:44, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Symbol support vote.svg Support but I would go further: any submissions with number outside the range 1-7 should also be considered incomplete.   — Jeff G. ツ 19:43, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes, the numbers 1-7 should be mandatory input - consensus for this is under discussion at Commons talk:File renaming#Require_a_numeric_reason_parameter_.232_in_the_range_1-7_for_Template:Rename.   — Jeff G. ツ 19:47, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Script to automatically add this template[edit]

Hi filemovers: You complained about unjustified move requests? Here is the solution for well-formed requests. I am posting here because I am really surprised that nobody commented there. -- RE rillke questions? 14:45, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Username used by template[edit]

  • Apparently, the template picks up the last editor of the page rather than the one who added the template. Comments?
  • Another, unrelated issue: if the requester does not add the "Rationale number" (parameter #2), then the summary line gets cluttered with "You need to input a value between 1 and 7 which corresponds to the file renaming criteria", even if the request is well justified. Would it be possible to modify the warning so that it does not get into the edit summary line? Materialscientist (talk) 02:28, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
  1. The new script for non-filemovers ("the move-tab") always included the real requestor. (|user=X) If it would be translated to more languages, I think it will be more often used -- especially by newcomers.
  2. Our white cat has inserted this and will be able to answer.
Regards RE rillke questions? 17:59, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
For the second point, I merely moved parameter 2 to parameter 3. I would wish to see parameter 2 be made mandatory as it is a good way to establish rationale to move the file directly correlating with existing guideline. I will do this now in the absence of objection to this end. From now on rename requests will require the second parameter to be a number or else the rename request will be marked as incomplete. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 21:18, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
With regards to the first point, it still shows up as though the last editor requested the move. Could the template be modified to subst: the name when placed? If I'm just fixing a request, I really don't see why my name should show up as the one making the request. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 23:09, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
I am attempting to establish a consensus for making parameter 2 mandatory at Commons talk:File renaming#Require_a_numeric_reason_parameter_.232_in_the_range_1-7_for_Template:Rename.   — Jeff G. ツ 19:36, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Assessments fix for Rename script[edit]

When files are renamed {{Assessments}} is broken. A solution is if this sample edit is automated with the existing rename script. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 22:36, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

... because the links to the voting pages will break. The easiest solution is renaming before nominating a file for assessments. -- RE rillke questions? 05:52, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
What? No it will break if the parameter is not used. There are plenty of old nominations that passed (either here on commons or other wikis) and may be renamed in the future. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 07:45, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
Did you read my sentence? It means I agree this could be done by script but people should think about the file name before promoting/nominating an image. -- RE rillke questions? 07:57, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh! I thought your "...because" was not an objection. I was confused there. :D -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 08:38, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
I never dealt with the {{Assessments}} - template and didn't know what it is doing. I should this have said before.
Maybe you are aware of a JavaScript wikitext-template parser à la
var templates = wikitext.getTemplateByName('Assessments');
$.each(templates, function(i, template) {
   var p = template.params.get('renamed');
   if (p) return false;
   template.params.set('renamed', old_filename);
   template.save();
});

? Otherwise I think it's overdue to write such an “evaluator”. A common task is to alter templates and their parameter but recursive matches are impossible with RegEx(:?p)?. So the first template inside a template or a simple <nowiki> can break the script. Ah, before I forget: The rename-script is MediaWiki:Gadget-AjaxQuickDelete.js. Please post script requests concerning the rename-script there. Thank you. -- RE rillke questions? 14:09, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

{{Assessments}} marks featuredness and other criteria files are awarded. It relies on {{PAGENAME}} which changes if a file is moved. |renamed= parameter would fix this problem. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 22:07, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Couldn't pagename be subst:-ed when placing the template? A similar example is {{subst:OP}}. -- RE rillke questions? 23:22, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Rename script unavailable to filemoves who had their rights revoked but later reinstated[edit]

I have not seen the "rename" button since that hick-up. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 08:39, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Are you seeing the green-area (where decline request and rename are) in the template? Perhaps deleting all files in your cache can help. If it doesn't, modify your common.css to force RL to create a new css for you.
BTW, you can still invoke the script using the move & replace link in the vector-dropdown/ tab in monobook (near to history) -- RE rillke questions? 14:14, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
