interwiki links between all languages
Current situation:
interwiki links
between all languages
=> proposed links of all langages to one central point
Proposed situation:
links of all languages
to one central point

The sisterlinks project aims to collect links to all articles on all sisterprojects.

The collection of links is stored on a central place, typically on Commons.

This collection of links is also meant as a start for meta:A new look at the interwiki link. This project is not a replacement for interwiki links, but hopefully temporary until sisterprojects are linked via proper interwiki links as described in A step further or such proposal. >>>>

This project is planned to have 4 phases

  1. a pilot with only Science categories to English language sister projects
  2. all categories to English language sister projects
  3. distribute present sisterlinks to sister projects in all languages
  4. articles as well as categories

[edit] Usage of sistertemplates

Note: Substitute a name or phrase for "xxx" in the wikicode below on the left. In the wikicode below "Category" can be removed from any of the sister links if a page exists for the topic, but not a category. "Special:Search/" can be substituted for "Category:" in the wikicode below. This can pull up many results when neither a category nor a page exists. For an example see Category:Empires. The Wictionary sister link does not need "Category:" or "Special:Search/" in its wikicode. Copy the template list below to Notepad or another text editor. Then use the replace command in the edit menu to replace xxx with a name or phrase. Or to replace "Category:" with "Special:Search/" for some of the sister links. Quotes can be put around a phrase to narrow the search. For an example see Category:Dirty War in Argentina. To test the sister links use the preview function while editing the category page.

Every link consists of
   | xx: | font | link |
where font is

  • space: normal
  • b: bold
  • r: red, indicating the link does (not yet) exist

[edit] First Phase

In the first phase only 1) Categories 2) Science and 3) English language will be linked, as a pilot version.

See examples at Category:Science and its subcategories Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics

[edit] Second Phase

All other categories to the English language sister projects

[edit] Third Phase

In the 3rd phase english sisterlinks will be distributed to sister projects in all languages

  • The Template:sisterlinks needs to be translated into the different languages and placed on the projects of that language
  • on a pages the {{sisterlinks|Category:xxxx}} should be added, for example on fr:Catégorie:France in the french wikipedia and the french wiknews and the french wikisource the template {{sisterlinks|Category:France}} should be added (as indidcated on Category:France on Commons.

The distribution of this template can be registered and checked by the sisterlink table below.

Red is use for a blank page. User:84.121.35.52
Red is indeed intended for missing pages. I only used it once for en:Template:sisterlinks indicating it has an other layout. Making it greeen, italic or otherwise is only possible with an additional template, which is only used once. HenkvD 15:53, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
I prefer and automatic linking in from every Wikimedia Sister Project to other ones (in a similar way to the button "Search" in Commons. User:84.121.35.52
A general "Search" does not actually mean a page might exists. On a general project like commons the chance that a sertain page exists on hundreds of pages is slim. Only if all (or a majority of) projects have a related page this migh be usefull. Furthermore every language should have a different parameter as the translation is deifferent, so it is not on option. HenkvD 15:53, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
I like the idea behind this project but I have a few questions. Using this page Category: Bovidae as an example. Why is the 'Commons box' included if it doesn't have any links? The Wikispecies box has a link from the word 'species' would it not be better if it was the name of the page it was linking to, so in the case of this example, Bovidae? Lastly I don't see why 'See more at interwikilinks' needs to be in the Wikipedia box, perhaps you can enlighten me. —Rooivalk 10:33, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
It might be a good idea for species to have a name of the article in the link of the page. Currently there is no text (only 'Species') because all other links are langauages and wikispecies and Commons don't have languages. On the other hand a name could get very long, that is why it is now a fixed 'Species'. I prefer to leave that, but feel free to improve. HenkvD 18:45, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
Point taken about long species names. Perhaps it would be better to change 'Species' to 'Wikispecies'. This would be consistent with the other wiki headings and less likely to be confusing when used for categories above the species level. Rooivalk 10:37, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
I changed Species into wikispecies. You are right, this might be confusing. HenkvD 12:27, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Commons has the same kind of link as Wikispecies, except that is it to it own page. That is why it turns black. Why is it here in the first place: That is to inform the reader that in this example there are 3 projects: Wikipedia, wikispecies and Commons. HenkvD 18:45, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
What is the meaning of 'see more at interwikilinks' below the link(s) of wikipedia. See for example Category:Sports. The interwikilinks to wikipedia contains 30 langauages. The wikipedia table shows only 13, because these are the languages used in any of the other projects. To indicate that this are not all interwikilinks to wikipedia the text 'see more at interwikilinks' ís added. HenkvD 18:45, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

I don't know if the project is useful, but I'm sure it should not be at the Commons. At least it should not use the existing categories here. For example if one comes from religious source texts in German and wants news on religious topics in English, he has to go over Category:Religion and his browser has to load almost 50 images in this category that he doesn't want. I think meta: would be a better place for it. --Jofi 23:58, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Commons is choosen because here the structure of categories is already prestent. Anyway this project is also meant as a start for meta:A new look at the interwiki link, and will hopefully be replaced by a permanant solution. HenkvD 09:18, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Ugh, what a mess ... Henk, have you discussed this idea with other users - perhaps with GerardM? Have you heard of Ultimate Wiktionary(Z)? Do you know Using Ultimate Wiktionary for Commons? Sorry, but common interwiki and sisterproject linking is already enough. We don't need such a parallel and mostly duplicate link project in my opinion. I don't really get the sense of these templates on all the different projects. How do you think should such a parallel universe (in addition to the existing "normal" links to Commons and interwiki/interlanguage links) be maintained properly. We already got many, many bots running to keep the interlanguage links on the projects half-decent ... Greetings --Überraschungsbilder 14:45, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

There are many suggestions for interwiki including wikidata, ultimate wiktionary, meta:A new look at the interwiki link, templates stored on commons, etc. etc. I have not seen proposal to actualy use it for interwiki links yet. Especially links between sisterprojects is an area what is not proposed at all. Furthermore the sisterlinks project is to collect the links, not a goal. When the interwikis will vbe handled centrally by one of the formentioned suggesttions (or an other) the sisterlinks can be replaced by that. HenkvD 15:28, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

I have made a proposal for a new Wikimedia project which aims to link together all the Wikimedia projects with a viewer-based interface. This overlaps with that somewhat. Please look at meta:Wikiscope for more, and comment on the idea. Thank you. -meta:User:Dbmag9

What I understand from Wikiscope it is more like a portal on a broad subject. Sisterlinks is more like interwiki links between pages with the same (sub)topic. What it has in common is the intention to link all wikimedia projects more together on a central place. HenkvD 19:02, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Need clarification

"See more at interwikilinks" is a null phrase. How about a link to here if that's what you mean! // FrankB 19:24, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

It means 2 things:
  • only languages should be added that are present on wikinews, wikisource or other sisterlinks. Listing ALL langauges would be a duplication of interwikilinks
  • Interwiki links are shown at the left bottom. A link to m:Interwiki links would not claryfy much.
HenkvD 09:43, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] portals

have you considered doing this for portals, as well as category's? Bawolff 09:22, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

How about Sisterwikiversity? Solarapex 23:06, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "See more at interwikilinks"

For the longest time I did not know what this meant. I now know that "interwikilinks" is the name for the other-language "wikipedia" links sometimes included at the bottom left of pages on the commons.

I thought it was referring to some special index of all the interwikilinks. I often wondered why there was no link to that index.

I suggest making the phrase clickable, and linking to w:Help:Interlanguage links. It seems to be the best page I have found so far for explaining the left sidebar links to other-language versions of the page or category.

w:Help:Interlanguage links is not clear enough, though, about where and what these interwikilinks are. --Timeshifter 23:20, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

I just changed it into "See more at interwikilinks (?)" HenkvD 21:37, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

(unindent) Great! Is it possible to also make the name "interwikilinks" an internal table-of-contents type link to the sidebar area where the interwikilinks are actually found? A link like this one: #Need clarification. Except it would go to the "wikipedia" links section of the left sidebar.

Another example; please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine [Later note. It should be w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine instead]. Some of the table-of-contents links go to sections of the right sidebar. I haven't looked yet at how they do it there.

To make "interwikilinks" clickable in this way may also need some bookmark HTML at "wikipedia:" too, I believe. It may be something like

<a name="interwiki"></a>

If clicking "interwikilinks" takes one directly to the actual interwikilinks, then lots more people will find those interwiki links. And once they know what they are, then they will start adding more of them both to the sidebar and to the sisterlinks boxes at the top of categories.--Timeshifter 21:54, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

You probably mean w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine. In that case the w:Template:WPPalestine Sidebar includes paragraphs in w:Portal:Palestine/Opentask as ==Requests==. I don't know how to link to the left sidebar. HenkvD 12:23, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. Greatly appreciated. I see how the template code is buried in there at deeper and deeper levels. Where is the template for the left sidebar? I can ask someone on the talk page for it to put "wikipedia interwiki links" there instead of just "wikipedia". And I could ask that it be put in the left sidebar even when there aren't any interwiki links there yet. Along with something like a linked "You can help" to the how-to page.

Then we could link to the left sidebar from "See more at interwiki links". By the way, I think it makes more sense to use 2 words for "interwiki links". This page uses it that way: meta:Help:Guide for system administrators for setting up interwiki linking

We could link to the left sidebar with

[[#Wikipedia interwiki links|See more at interwiki links]]

I think that would help greatly in getting more people to understand, use, and add more of those links. Especially in the commons categories. A lot of images are buried out in the many other wikipedias in other languages. In their category directories. Many of those images can be moved to the commons.

So the more interwiki links, the more easy access to those images. Especially when one can't read the language in the other-language category trees. An interwiki link takes one right to the same category. Then one can find the images even without understanding the language. Since it is often obvious what the image is, and where it would belong in the commons. But the problem is the lack of interwiki links in the commons categories, and the lack of understanding concerning them. I categorized images on the commons for many months before gaining much understanding of sister links, interwiki links, their wiki code, etc.

Maybe the question-mark link can be put there in the left sidebar too. I am trying a link to the left sidebar:

#toolbox

It does not work. So it must not be in the form of

== toolbox ==

in the left sidebar template. "Wikipedia interwiki links" in the left sidebar would need to be in the form of

== Wikipedia interwiki links ==

Then we could link to it with

[[#Wikipedia interwiki links|See more at interwiki links]]

So I guess I need to study the left sidebar a lot more.

For newcomers to this area, I am referring to the "wikipedia" section of links at the bottom of the left sidebar on many pages. There are not always links there. People have to add them. Here is a page with a lot of them in the left sidebar: Category:CommonsRoot. --Timeshifter 15:09, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "wikipedia interwiki links"

"See more at interwiki links" in the sister links box would mean a lot more to people if that is what the left sidebar links were labeled as.

I suggest using "wikipedia interwiki links" instead of just "wikipedia" as the section header at the bottom of the left sidebar. --Timeshifter 22:28, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
