Note: This discussion is about the template for sister-link boxes with links to other-language Wikipedia articles, categories, etc. See an old example to the right.

Overlap problems[edit]

In commons categories the sister link template can overlap part of the subcategories below it if there is no introductory text. This is fairly common in categories. Since categories often have no introduction.

Sometimes the sister link template overlaps the top of images below it in categories. This occurs if there are no subcategories also.

So I removed the wikipedia logo in the template since it takes up a whole line in the template. This solved some of the overlap problems.

There is less of a problem with the sister links for wikinews, etc.. Since they don't have the line "See more at interwikilinks." So I left their logo images in place.

The overlap problems show up more at larger and larger font sizes. The template is a right-floating template, and as the text inside the template gets larger and larger, the template drops farther and farther down into either the subcategories or the images. --Timeshifter 12:18, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

If the templates fill a great percentage of the screen you could add <br clear="all"> below these templates. See for instance at Category:Medicine. HenkvD 18:25, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for that code. I have used <br style="clear:both;"/> at times. It it essentially the same? Is one code phrase preferred over the other?
I think that it is important that the template not overlap the images or the subcategories. Most people adding the template to categories will not know of the "clear all" code. --Timeshifter 07:10, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
I don't know if one code is preferred over the other. There is even a template {{-}}. This uses <br style="clear:both;"/>.
Can you give an example, preferrably one that is OK now, but overlaps when a very large font is choosen? On IE 6.0 I don't see overlap so I think it depends on the browser. HenkvD 18:48, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

(unindent) Thanks for {{-}}. I also found {{clear}}. Please see Template_talk:Clear. I made them use the same code.

I am using Firefox. See Tools/Options/Content/Fonts and Colors. I have it set to use Verdana as the default font, and a minimum font size of 17. Try pasting this sister link code into any category page with at least one full row of images, or a row of subcategories:

|en:| |Category:NAME|}}

There is an example at the top right of this comment. On a category page you may not see the overlap problem now anywhere since I removed the top row of the template that contained the logo image. I will have to check around again.

I need to find a category page with a short name so that the text introduction: "There are ## subcategories to this category shown below (more may be shown on subsequent pages)" does not fill more than 2 lines.

That little bit of text is enough to stop the overlap problem if it fills 3 lines due to a long category name, and a long corresponding sister links box. I may not be able to find an example of the overlap problem anymore since I removed the extra row in the template.

I am looking for a category without subcategories, and with at least one full row of images. Then you can see the closeness of the bottom of the sister links box, and the top of the images. Then you can see how an extra row in the sister links box could cause overlap.

I was adding the sister links template to a lot of categories, and so I frequently saw the overlap problem until I fixed it. --Timeshifter 14:49, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

right|200pxI pasted the above mentioned the Category:Ancient Roman theater in Bosra (the first random category that fits the requirment). I added some extra blank lines. On IE 6.0 I dont have ovelaps. See the screenprint. What about other templates? Is ther overlap on Category:Boolean, register, and condition testing templates? HenkvD 19:01, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
I had to drill down Category:Cities by country until I found an image-filled category with a short category name, and without subcategories or an introduction.
See Category:Kirkenes, and try adding the sister link code in preview mode. There is still a tiny bit of image overlap in Firefox when using the Verdana font at the 17 point size. It is not a problem though since the overlap is not covering text. There is no overlap at all in MS Internet Explorer even when set to the largest font size. I tested it.
Looking at the preview in Category:Kirkenes in the Explorer browser I think it would be a problem with Explorer if another line was added to the template.
There is a huge overlap problem in Firefox with the other template you mentioned:
Category:Boolean, register, and condition testing templates .
Even at smaller font sizes it is a jumbled mess of overlapping text. But I see no problem with it in the Explorer browser. Right-aligned tables and templates sometimes cause problems unless carefully laid out. Sometimes they require special "fix-it" codes. Especially when more than one are used.
I doubt the problem, though is with Firefox. Firefox tries to meet the established standards set by world standard-setting bodies. Microsoft is known for adding non-standard code to its Explorer browser. It may become standard in the future, but there is no guarantee, so it causes a lot of problems standardizing the various browser views of pages. --Timeshifter 22:35, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Removing a part of the template (the image) is no final solution. What kind of "fix-it" code would be possible? HenkvD 19:06, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

(unindent) None that would work within the template. The "clear all" code previously discussed would leave a blank space if used within the template. The "clear all" code has to be manually placed after the introductory text in a category. Most people will not bother adding it.

Any floating, right-aligned template longer than 4 lines long will cause this problem if used on category pages. So the other template you linked to will have to be changed too.

A similar problem occurred with floating, right-aligned templates used in wikipedia articles. Many had to be changed to "hide-show" formats in order to prevent Firefox browser problems. Problems with left-aligned image placement being screwed up by the right-aligned templates. The main fix was to make the templates default to being closed in a hide-show format. See w:Iraq War. When the templates were not in the hide-show format they pushed ALL the images (left and right-placed ones) down the page. Especially in Firefox. Only the right-placed images in Explorer.

The other fix used (besides hide-show formats) was:

See w:Template:FixHTML

See the code placement in w:Iraq War.

Logo layout[edit]

Still, I've re-added logo back b/c it didn't take effect on the sister-link layout. Rico Shen contact... 04:51, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

I had to revert it, because the logo takes up a separate line again. More than 4 lines in the template causes overlap problems in some situations. If we could get the logo on the same line as the word "Wikipedia" then it wouldn't be a problem. --Timeshifter 10:24, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
I placed the logo on the same line as the word "Wikipedia". Is this OK? HenkvD 16:50, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Looks good. One has to look at a category page that one hasn't looked at in awhile in order to see the change. Otherwise one may see the old browser-cached page with the old template without the logo. At least that is how it works in my Firefox browser.
I am looking at Category:War casualties which shows the logo on the same line as "Wikipedia".
Note though that one still needs this template code:
in certain situations when using the sister links template. For example; see the {{clear}} code in use on this category page: Category:Diagrams. It keeps the sister links box from overlapping the maintenance box below it.--Timeshifter 17:40, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
For more info see {{clear}}. --Timeshifter 17:40, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia links go through the English Wikipedia[edit]

Maybe this template should use its own version of {{sisterwikis}}, so that Wikipedia links go directly to the right language section of Wikipedia, not through the English one (w:). --AVRS (talk) 16:19, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Link Query[edit]

There is currently only a small query mark hyperlink which looks as if someone has highlighted a possible mistake - should this be extended to include the whole topic as well as languages? Like this this maybe:
