[edit] General instructions

If you are new to Commons' Featured Picture Candidates, please read the following carefully before nominating or reviewing.

A Featured Picture is meant to be the cream of what Commons can offer. It must both have value and be of high technical quality. Typically, reviewers will look at

  • Resolution (size, effective details resolved. ...)
  • Focus, Depth of Field (is the subject/are the relevent parts completely in focus ?)
  • Composition (how elements are put together)
  • Exposure (has the shot captured the appropriate amount of light ?)
  • Movement Control (frozen, motion blur ? sometimes motion blur serve the purpose of the photo, sometimes not)
  • Lighting (where does lighting comes from ? Does it help showing volumes ? Isn't it too harsh ?)

Please note...

Photographs of lower resolution than 2 million pixels,
are typically rejected unless there are strong mitigating reasons. Graphics located on Commons may be used in ways other than viewing on a conventional computer screen. We can't predict what devices may be used in the future, so it is important that nominated pictures have as high a resolution as possible. This doesn't mean people have to upload their highest resolution version, but something with high enough size to fit large medium and to show all the relevant details.
Altering a picture digitally,
is generaly accepted, as long as it is meant to correct a flaw and that it is not too intrusive.
Be careful with opinions,
images can be culturally biased by the photographer and/or the observer. The meaning of the image should be judged according to the cultural context of the image, not by the cultural context of the observer. An image “speaks” to people, and it has the capacity to evoke emotion such as tenderness, rage, rejection, happiness, sadness, etc. Good photographs are not limited to evoking pleasant sensations….
And remember,
a bad picture of a very difficult subject is a better picture than a good picture of an ordinary subject. A good picture of a difficult subject is an extraordinary photograph.

If you are unfamiliar with any of the terms mentioned above, you can read the complete guidelines before nominating. This will help you maximise you chances of succeeding when nominating a picture on FPC.

[edit] Nominating a candidate, for FP status, delisting or replacing

If you believe a picture is worth getting featured status, or if you feel it isn't up to FP standard anymore, please go to the User:Benh/sandbox/FP Add Candidate and follow instructions given there.

[edit] Voting

[edit] General rules

Note: If you are used to English Wikipedia FPC, please do not skip this section.

  1. The voting period is 9 complete days counted from the nomination. After the end of this period the result will be determined according to rules detailed on closing nominations section. Votes added on day 10 and after are not counted,
  2. Nominations and contributions to discussion by anonymous contributors are welcome, but their votes are not counted,
  3. Nominations do not count as votes. Support, Keep or Replace must be explicitly stated,
  4. Nominators can withdraw their nominated pictures at any time. This is done by simply writing "I withdraw my nomination" or by adding the text {{withdraw|~~~~}}.
  5. Remember, the goal of the Wikimedia Commons project is to provide a central repository for free images to be used by all Wikimedia projects, including possible future projects. This is not simply a repository for Wikipedia images, so images should not be judged here on their suitability for that project.

  1. an appropriate license (of course),
  2. at least 5 supporting votes,
  3. a ratio of supporting/opposing votes of at least 2/1 (a two-thirds majority).

Two different versions of the same picture cannot both be featured, but only the one with the higher number of votes.

[edit] Delisting Candidates

[edit] Closing a Nomination

A Nomination can be closed on its day ten.

It may also be taken out of the list before end of voting period if

  1. It is withdrawn,
  2. It has an {{FPX}} template which hasn't been contested 24 hours after it's been applied,
  3. It doesn't have more than a "changing state" vote (Support, Delist or Replace), not counting the nominator's, on day number 5 (day of nomination + 5) (the rule of the 5th day)

In any of these cases, the Candidate's status remains the same (a FPC isn't featured, a delist candidate isn't delisted, a replace candidate isn't replaced).

Any experienced user may close requests. For instructions on how to close nominations, see Commons:Featured picture candidates/What to do after voting is finished.

[edit] Above all, Be polite

Please don't forget that the image you are judging is somebody's work. Avoid using phrases like "it looks terrible" and "I hate it". If you must oppose, please do so with consideration. Also remember that your command of English might not be the same as someone elses. Choose your words with care. Happy judging… and remember.... all rules can be broken.
