After WWI, due to the abolition of monarchy in Germany and the loss of the titles of Prinz von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha und Herzog zu Sachsen, the saxony inescutcheon was removed from the arms of the family. This decision was never made legal by the issue of a new royal decree, though the 1921 decree about royal standards removed the saxony inescutcheon from flags.
