Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator (find an active one) on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. |

Tip: Categorizing images [edit]
Hello, Marcus Qwertyus!
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
-
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
-
-
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

I question your deletion nomination of File:B-2_spirit_bombing.jpg, as the current source it states is US Air Force. If you're looking for a more specific source, that might want to be noted before having nominated the image for deletion. | File:Phantom_ray_rollout.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. File:SPE HeadGearSys image1.jpg [edit]
There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

- Marcus, I respect your awareness of the fair use concept, but deleting another persons four sentence quote, which is useful in a working discussion, is pushing it a bit. I doubt there is any danger of commons users confusing a talk page quote with the free media that commons is hosting. I would therefore ask you to please refrain from reverting Timeshifters comments. Content that predates OTRS and has proper legacy licensing information, but no OTRS permissions. [edit]
Hi Marcus,
thanks for helping out in the Wikimedia commons. Today, i noticed that you flagged File:Aimoneyetap.jpg for deletion, I have already responded on the deletion discussion page but that's not the reason I am contacting you.
You may not be aware that the OTRS is a relatively new thing - it didn't exist prior to the year 2006.
While some content has indeed no OTRS information (yet), it may still have legacy license tagging in the file description which was sufficient and proper at the time it was uploaded. File:Aimoneyetap.jpg is one of those. And the OTRS is not about enforcing a new system; it is about easy verification of a creator's intent.
The game we're playing when we clean up wikimedia content is still that of determining whether a file is a clear copyright violation, probably a copyright violation, probably not a copyright violation or clearly not a copyright violation. The former two may warrant a deletion request, for the latter two there are much better ways to deal with the situation. And of course, copyright violations are not the only reason for why something may warrant deletion.
Either way, in a situation where the file is older than OTRS and wikipedia-compatible license information is present in the file description, the file falls into the probably not a copyright violation category, and a deletion request may be contrary to the objectives of Wikimedia Commons (which included keeping good contributors who follow the rules).
I feel it would have been better in this case to start by contacting the author and waiting 15 days before recommending deletion; but still - legacy content can be a challenge to deal with properly; there's still a bunch load of low-hanging fruits for which filing a deletion request is more appropriate.
Again, I have all respect for people like you who actively work to make Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia a better place; but please let's be cautious and courteous about enforcing rules on content that predates the rules we are trying to enforce. It's a matter of fairness to those who I also have respect for - the creators who actually put time and effort into creating content for the commons, and doing everything they could to meet the rules at the time.
Thanks and kind regards, ---volty 03:40, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi again, i raised the question at the OTRS noticeboard and User:Docu responded that it is consensus that these don't require an OTRS tag. I hope this helps clarify future such requests ;-) Cheers, ---volty 12:37, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Your Flickr uploads [edit]
Hello Marcus Qwertyus!
Thanks a lot for your contributions! Thank you for transferring images from Flickr to Commons! Two hints ahead:
- Always upload the highest resolution of a photograph that is available on flickr
- You can use this tool for your flickr uploads. It makes the whole procedure much easier and faster for you!
Thank you for your support! Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 14:50, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
Why do you place six flickrreview-tags? Do you think that's funny? One of them is enough. --High Contrast (talk) 14:55, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- See Commons:Prototype upload wizard feedback#I'm probably talking to myself but.... Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 15:21, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- And why don't you remove superfluous tags afterwards? That's really no big deal. --High Contrast (talk) 16:51, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

File:C-27J Spartan at an air show.jpg [edit]
This media may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons from Flickr, File:C-27J Spartan at an air show.jpg, has been reviewed by an administrator or reviewer and found it available on Flickr under the license Noncommercial (
), No derivative works (
), or All Rights Reserved (
), which isn't compatible with Commons. Unless the Flickr user changes the license to one that Wikimedia Commons accepts, the file will be speedy deleted if it hasn't been already. Commons:Flickr files/Appeal for license change has information about sending the Flickr user an appeal asking for the license to be changed. Only Flickr images tagged as
(CC-BY) or
(CC-BY-SA) are allowed on Commons. Once the license on Flickr is changed, you may replace the Unfree Flickr file tag with flickrreview so that an administrator or reviewer can review the image again, or ask an administrator to restore the file if it has been deleted.
If you want to avoid this mistake in the future, you may use Qwertyus Flickr upload bot. Thank you!. Túrelio (talk) 08:37, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
New USAF wing categories [edit]
Hi! Could you please add "(United States Air Force)" to your USAF wing categories, because more air arms exist on the world than just the USAF and it is otherwise sometimes impossible to distinguish the categories. Thank you! Cheers Cobatfor (talk) 18:12, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
- Do we know why the en.wikipedia is not disambiguating their articles? If they get brackets can't they just be (United States)? Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 02:46, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
- That was all my doing... We had a discussion a few years back where we agreed upon the fact that the United States ones were essentially first, or something like that, and should not have that after them. Also, it might just be an American pride thing. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 09:19, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Ban Ki-moon and other portraits.jpg [edit]
|
|
| This media may be deleted. |
| Thanks for uploading File:Ban Ki-moon and other portraits.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. (You can get a list of all your uploaded files using the Gallery tool.) Thank you. |

Note to self [edit]
File source is not properly indicated: File:Improved M249 Machine Gun.jpg [edit]
| This media may be deleted. |
| A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Improved M249 Machine Gun.jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

File:Microsoft Surface RT out of the box.jpg [edit]
| File:Microsoft Surface RT out of the box.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may find Commons:Copyright rules useful. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk.
The file you added has been deleted. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open [edit]
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
-
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
