Dear Abigor,

I read some of the other messages written to you before me for similar reasons (deletion of the page here). Kindly help me understand how do i get a license and from whom. I am a trustee of my organization (institution) and have published the file on the website or a paper brochure so far. I would like it to be published here - but i am not sure what licenses i need for that?

Cheers n thanks in anticipation of your help. Harpreet

Hello, in November we delayed a final discussion and resolution until December on this matter. You commented in the discussion; welcoming you to return. Let's figure out the best solution. Respectfully, Durova (talk) 04:22, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Blocks of Mutter Erde[edit]

Hi Abigor, I see you are also busy with reverting harassing edits by Mutter Erde. I suggest, however, to limit blocks for one day only as any longer period will not hit Mutter Erde but possibly someone else. Many Internet connections in Germany, like this one, expire after one day, i.e. another IP address is assigned then. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 18:36, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Just happened on this one :). AFBorchert's is correct - no point in more than a day, I had a posting from Mutter ages ago about it and I can confirm that his IP changed daily - you would be merely catching others who were with his ISP. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 19:03, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Why did you edit my userpage?[edit]

I'd like to know why you edited my userpage without my permission. The polite thing would have been to send me a message, my e-mail is listed right on the page. I'm using my own logo and my own likeness for my user page. In the future, I'd appreciate it if you would advice me of any "wrongs" before pursuing any action on a personal page. I respect the right of others to edit their own pages, and only comment on things I might find offensive or praiseworthy, I would suggest you do the same. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.233.203.207 (talk • contribs) 9. IP 74.233.203.207, if you don't log-in under your username, your comment is rather useless because nobody knows which one is your userpage. Anyway, Abigor likely won't reply soon as he's absent already for a while due to reasons stated on his userpage. --Túrelio (talk) 00:40, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Hope you get well soon, Abigor. --Túrelio (talk) 00:40, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Your assistance please[edit]

You deleted File:Ramazan_bashardost..JPG. The deletion log says it was in Category:other speedy deletions.

Afghanistan is not a signatory to any international copyright agreements, and has no domestic copyright law. In other discussions Afghan images have been recognized as {{PD-Afghanistan}}.

I am curious as to how this image came to be deleted. Can you help me? Geo Swan (talk) 05:34, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Deletions[edit]

One advantage of pinging a longtime uploader rather than mindlessly executing an anon's flagging of copyvio is that the longtime uploader can then identify the other two images in the same category, and flag the category itself as likely to contain only copyvios, rather than making the longtime uploader hunt around to figure out what happened, since both the flagging and deletion of the four-year-old image happened in between the longtime uploader's logons to commons. Texas is not in Russia[edit]

You recently deleted both Addison Transit Center parking at night.jpg and File:Dallas Fed and sculpture.jpg with the edit summary "No freedom of panorama in Russia". That's as may be but Addison and Dallas are both in Texas, not Russia, so this is not an issue. Could you please restore both of these images, and any others that might have mistakenly been removed? Thanks. - Dravecky (talk) 23:21, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

Ичалки (Нижегородская область)[edit]

Would you explain me, why you have deleted [1] file Файл:Ichalki_monument.jpg. I am an author of this photo and I made this picture for Wiki.--Basus Ius Group (talk) 06:47, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

Hello,
You're file was showing a modern building of a piece of art in Russia, but in Russia there is no Freedom of panorama and there for a copyright violation.
Best regards,

Dimitrov-monument-Vladikavkaz.jpg[edit]

I can't find the reason why you have deleted the file. I can't find any discussion, I haven't been warned. It's been my own work under a free license. I can't find it now on my computer to reaupload. What can be done to restore it? Amikeco (talk) 07:02, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

Amikeco, the image was deleted with the rationale "copyvio|No freedom of panorama in Russia". I don't know the image, but may be it showed a modern building/work of art, whose architect/artist isn't dead since >70 years. Then it is still copyrighted and you don't get own copyright when you take a photo of it. And as there seems to be no freedom of panorama in Russia, the photo is a derivative/copyvio. Just my thoughts. --Túrelio (talk) 08:17, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Turelio for your fast answer, I don't have anything to add :-)

No freedom of panorama in Russia[edit]

(Deletion log); 16:01 . . Abigor (talk | contribs) deleted "File:Novomoskovsk Great Patriotic War memorial.jpg" (No freedom of panorama in Russia) (Deletion log); 16:01 . . Abigor (talk | contribs) deleted "File:Novomoskovsk Great Patriotic War monument 1941-1945.JPG" (No freedom of panorama in Russia) (Deletion log); 16:01 . . Abigor (talk | contribs) deleted "File:Monument "To Siberian Soldiers".jpg" (No freedom of panorama in Russia)

First of all, thank you very much for sweeping out my contribution to this project. Please stop deleting photos that do not comply this "freedom of panorama" rule without any warning. I've believe you don't obey the rules so blind that you leave no feedback possibility to the photographers like me. Use the standard deletion procedure and do respect the work of the others. --Fastboy (talk) 18:16, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Hello Fastboy,
I did nothing wrong when deleting those files, according to COM:FOP there is no freedom of panorama in Russia, this means your pictures where copyright violations and according to our deletion policy its okay to speedydelete them and I did so I did follow the normal procedure.
I'm sorry to say that it has nothing to do with feedback, the local law says you cant take a picture like that and there is nothing to discuss about it so there is no reason to wait untill feedback.
I'm also sorry that the nominator didn't give you a note about his nomination on his talk page, its the responsibility for the nominator to leave a note on your talkpage, its not the job for the deleting admin.
Best regards,
Huib talk 18:51, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
OK, next time your policy changed, there will be probably no contributors in this project. Just keep in mind. --Fastboy (talk) 20:11, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
I can understand that you don't like that your files are deleted and that I'm the bad guy because I pressed the button, but lets look it in a other way.
Because there is no freedom of panorama in Russia (That's not a policy but a law) your pictures are a copyright violation, this means in the worst case somebody can start a legal case against you and it will cost a lot of money because you will lose.
A normal DR can stay open for a very long time, some are open for 6 months, this would mean that your file is online for 6 months against Russian laws, and all that time somebody can notify the people that have the rights and you can get in legal trouble...
By pressing the delete button the copyright violation is gone, Commons is safe for legal cases, you are safe against legal trouble...
So if you say all contributors will leave becaused of the policy I have to say I rather see people leave because we are trying to protect them that I see people leave because legal reasons. Huib talk 21:32, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
No, you're not a bad guy (I hope so at least). My concern wasn't about you personally (probably, my English is not clear enough). In fact, this intention to avoid copyright violations helps no one; what is more dangerously than possible legal troubles, are these speedy deletions that really
  • leave no chance to photographers to reply (nominators may be wrong, do they?);
  • leave no chance to make a local copy of deleted image (some of the images were not kept locally and were lost; here is one example (use translator from Russian))
  • and what is more important - leave no chance to transfer the image from commons into local wikis under fair use terms (or their equivalent like ru:template:FoP-Russia).
These things are getting more obvious when someone deletes exactly your work at one perfect moment. Instead of putting tags like move-to-local-wikis-if-possible on the image by requesting standard deletion procedure, these formal speedy deletions result in no file no problem. So, your help will be really appreciated if
  • images that violate no freedom of panorama in <place the country name here> law would be deleted via standard procedure; with notification of the uploader at least (in an ideal case - a notification on the articles talk pages in local wikis is more effective) and with a "trial" period, which gives the uploader (or any other wikipedian) a possibility to move the image into local wiki(s) under fair use terms;
  • the transferring of an image from commons to local wiki would be automated (like the move-to-commons process). A "make fair use in local wiki" button makes the image safe to delete, and only then - the delete button makes safe from legal cases. --Fastboy (talk) 19:02, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
I raise my voice since I deleted some of these images: Your concerns are justified. Unfortunately I can't imagine any working procedure with people from several local projects working together to tidy things up here on Commons. You say no file, no problem, I say no acute threat to images, no will to join the cause. I am not cynical towards this matter, but ordinary deletion has always been our approach to deal with sculptures from the US (no FOP), buildings from Italy (no FOP) and other local habits. We won’t reach all uploaders from the past, we won’t reach all users who tag these image and unfortunately we won’t reach all sysops who come along the speedy deletion category, read a plausible request and carry it out. In the past, we restored images to be uploaded to local projects again. This is a lot of unnecessary work and can only be done if there is someone who asks for it, but I see no room for new guidelines and regulation, new processes and templates. In the past we deleted a lot of invalid licensing templates. There was a lot of time to transfer the images, to get used to the new situation. When we started deleting after months of active deletion requests and waiting, we still were the bad guys and often the necessary work people had yearned for was not done. Hope you find a way to deal with this problem, as for me, I won’t delete such images from Russia in the future. Best regards, --Polarlys (talk) 22:46, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

The law evidently doesn't work (I doubt all thouse journalists in Russia ask permissions of architects or who they must ask, it's technically impossible). Now it's being discussed on the highest level and will hopefully be changed in spnrig 2010. Is there a way to slow down the pace of deleting valueable content that has been present at Commons for years without any problems? Really, the mass picturecide is very painful for all of us contributing people at Wikipedias. Amikeco (talk) 22:05, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
