Tip: Categorizing images[edit]

Hello, Aiwok!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

using one of your pictures?[edit]

Dear User Aiwok,

you have published a nice image of three giraffes under a CC-BY-SA license on Wikipedia.

I would like to use your photo in an iPad picture identification game app for children (it will appear cropped to 217 by 124 pixel). Over 90% of the images in my app are public domain or from government-sponsored sources, but your image is nicer than the public domain alternatives. I attribute the photographers credits anyway, even for PD images, once at the image and once in an "About" screen.

I would like to ask you for permission to use your picture and find out what particular requirements you have for the attribution format, such as a particular real name or screen name. When the user sees a picture album, they can toggle between showing the names (+ credits) and showing the game (for collecting points). If the user taps an image while showing the names, the app opens the web browser and displays the site of the original image (wikipedia, flickr, NASA, etc.). For example screenshots of the app in development stage, see:

http://www.physics.ox.ac.uk/users/wolf/App_examples.html

I have decided not to use stock photos as that would make the app too expensive for a buyer. In fact, the app is supposed to be free for one week, after which users can still view the pictures, but not collect game points any more unless they pay a small price (1.99 USD), of which I intend to pass on a significant share to children's charities such as Unicef.

Please let me know any views or requirements you have.

Sincerely, Christian Wolf CWOLF (talk) 11:12, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Declined move[edit]

I declined the move request without a definitive identification of the subject. (File:Silberner Grünrüssler (Phyllobius argentatus).jpg) INeverCry 22:05, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

I think we should wait until we have a definite id of the insect. If we rename it without a definite id, we might just be giving it another wrong name. INeverCry 18:49, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
I think a featured picture like this may have a high score on google and may be often found with its wrong name. Additional information is only availiable in the small letters below and will be easily overlooked/ignored. The image is also already used in many Wikipages in about 15 languages. I think its important to do something against faulty information in the wikis.
--Aiwok (talk) 21:45, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
I've asked for the opinion of an admin or admins on this move: see Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#declined file move. INeverCry 21:50, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
The consensus of informed opinion is that this is not Phyllobius argentatus, and that it might be a Polydrusus sp. Not exactly sure a file name along the lines of Unidentified Curculionidae, is going to be that useful, but until a difinitive identification can be made it is right that the image be removed from article space where it is used as an example of Phyllobius argentatus. So please bear with us for a bit longer.--KTo288 (talk) 14:53, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
I'll wait until some coloepterologist are found to identify the beetle even better and then my words will be 'I told you so' because it is a Polydrusus. If it was to make a decision between Phyllobius argentatus, Phyllobius arborator or Phyllobius betulinus it would have been pretty difficult with one picture alone but here its not much incertitude (and that is on the species level - still I think he can only be P. formosus with his large flat eyes). --Aiwok (talk) 15:29, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
By the way has anyone ever looked up the source of this Image http://www.naturspektrum.de/ns1.htm and read its title there which is Seidiger Glanzrüssler (Polydrusus sericeus) (synonym of P. formosus)...*grml* --Aiwok (talk) 15:38, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Use of your picture for a book[edit]

Hi,

We’d like to use one of your pictures for a book that will be publish next fall. On wikimedia, it says that the picture is copyright free.

The title of the book is Secrets de plantes 2 and the name of the author is Fabien Girard. The initial print run will be 1000 copies.

We’d like to have your autorisation by e-mail to use this picture. If you accept, what is the exact name of the source that we must write beside the picture?

Here are the link of the picture.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 20:50, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Vielen Dank für die Nachricht und die detailierte Erklärung! Werde die Datei gleich editieren.

Insects[edit]

Why have you moved all the images from Category:Polydrusus impressifrons to Category:Polydrusus formosus and are now requesting renames? Both appear to be very closely related animals and are listed here and here separately. I've denied your requests until this is sorted out. Liamdavies (talk) 03:19, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Liamdavies,
I have put the pictures in the category Polydrusus formosus because the beetle shown on the image is P. formosus and not P. impressifrons. Of course these species are closely related but they are still different species. That should be also shown in the file name to prevent confusion. Polydrusus formosus has a very distinct face with quite large eyes. especiallly in the image File:PolydrususImpressifrons4.jpg you can see that the eye diameter of this specimen is even larger than the width of the frons.
Half of the images seem to be renamed already?
Regards --Aiwok (talk) 07:10, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
So we have no pictures of Polydrusus impressifrons then? Sounds like you know more than I, reinstate the move templates and I'll move them when I get time. Sorry for the hassle, but it's always better to be to cautious than to cavalier. Liamdavies (talk) 07:17, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
This may very well be P. impressifrons File:Polydrusus ssp 2.jpg but I,m not really sure because there are some more similar species. At least it is a different Polydrusus species than P. formosus. Please have a close look on the eyes of this beetle. They are quite different from those of P. formosus.
Thanks for asking instead just refusing. --Aiwok (talk) 07:25, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

✓ Done Sorry about the delay, all three are renamed. Liamdavies (talk) 16:30, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Aiwok,

Thanks for your support, but please stop that campaigne. ok? cheers. DenesFeri (talk) 07:29, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

I'm just puzzled and disappointed. Why are these guys retarding any progress in the project? Its like they want to keep people stupid. Why would anyone want to keep a misleading name? There is no good at all in having misleading names. Wikipedia and Commons are such great opportunities to provide knowledge to mankind but then there are these guys who keep it short by undoing the work of contributors. For example you did some effort by creating a rename request to have a proper name for some files - just to be undone by these stupid trolls! And worst of all there are so many ignorant trolls Admin. I explained in detail what's shown in the picture and there is a rename policy in the commons with simple rules (like 3. Correct misleading names into accurate ones). It is just impossible to to find any reasonable doubt that these files need to be renamed - still these guys refuse to do so, ignoring their own commons rules! They are like I'm the powerful Admin and I will refuse your puny requests or what is it? I just can't understand these people. How am I supposed to keep any faith in the project... --Aiwok (talk) 09:22, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
