[edit] Image:Wingdings_3_font.png
Hello, and thank you for uploading your files to Wikimedia Commons. There seems to be some license information missing regarding this particular file, however. Could you please fix this? Thank you--Orgullomoore 16:56, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image:Map of USA with state names edit1.svg
There's a typo in your image. "I" is missing in "Indiana". --Leafnode 10:11, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Two-column-layout.png
Out of curiosity, why did you use ragged right for this mockup ? For a two-column layout like this (with relatively wide columns), I'd have expected justified.
As an example image, I suggest a more conventional placement for the page number. Currently its placement is “too interesting” : its unusual placement makes me look at the number to see whether it belongs to the left column. When using just one image to depict/exemplify something, it's best for the image to be fairly typical of the thing being depicted.

- I assure you that I had absolutely no intention of being the least bit deceptive. I already thanked you here for your re-desaturation work, and I meant it.
-
-
-
- Additionally, all Wikimedia images offer an option to "upload a new version." I see nothing wrong with the new version being in black and white and the old version being in color, especially when both the image donor and the original uploader approve that. The guideline here is discussing a situation where "you try to upload a different file type".
-
-
-
- I have no objection to giving you as much attribution as possible, and no objection to giving the image files whatever new names you think would be appropriate.
-
-
-
- Please say whether the upload log is now satisfactory, here where you previously said it was “highly deceptive.”Ferrylodge 00:56, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello Andrew c!
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Commons images are used by editors on many projects in many languages. Each image is put into categories. This helps other editors find them. Please add categories to each image you upload.
To add an image to a category, add the following code to the end of the page.
-
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbit of comets, add the following to the image description page:
-
-
This will make the diagram show up in the categories: Astronomy diagrams, Comets.
For further information on categories read Commons:Categories.
The CommonSense Tool often helps you find the best category for your image.
Here is a gallery of your images. Please check that each image has a category. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the help desk. Thank you.

I was under the understanding that George Bergman had issued a general release for his photos in the Oberwolfach Photo Collection, because I have a minor ongoing project to upload pictures of mathematicians using this archive. [edit] WikiVoc
Nice work ! The {WVoclicense} template is not yet finish, it will later be a convenient tool to encourage every one to upload under PD license. (The GNU license FORCE the teacher to take a 10 pages copy of the GNU license together with each pic he print O.o ) Confirm me that you publish your work under PD license, then I may manage myself the clean ups. :]
The WVoclicense template will likely be ready tomorrow evening.
Regards, Yug (talk) 22:13, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, I read about how you want the project to be PD. But I read that too late. I used a GFDL image which I traced for the lightbulb. Other than that, I choose the PD option from the upload form for my other two illustrations. I don't mind using PD 100% in the future. I apologize that the image that the lightbulb was derived from isn't PD, so we should probably remove that image from WikiVoc. -Andrew c (talk) 22:24, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

For the license, try the link in the orange box on the right. Clic on the "?" to see how that work. That's still may be improve, but that's already working. bye Yug (talk) 10:31, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Andrew c, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.
Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons on irc.freenode.net. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators:#wikimedia-commons-admin.
You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.
Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

[edit] File premission File:Olaf1.JPG
Hello, I got an email from wikipedia commons that the File Olaf1.JPG, that I´ve uploaded needs a premission. I don´t really know how that works... :( But I can assure, that I am the author of this file. I photographed it by myself in may 2008. So I, the author, give the premission to use it for wikipedia commons.
Is this enough? What else do I have to do?. please help me.

[edit] Ticket 2009032910008434
Hi Andrew, please, if you merge tickets, take care that still to be answered tickets are not merged into an already closed ticket. If you forget to reopen the ticket, it is no longer to be found in the queue and thereby lost. Fortunately, I saw your reference to this ticket on the noticeboard. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 06:37, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'm pretty sure that is the first time I've done that, and I didn't know the software would behave like that. I figured since I was merging a ticket where the latest state was unlock and unanswered, that that would take precedent over the closed ticket. Now I know, and I'll watch for that in the future. Normally, I would have merged and then responded, but due to language barrier for this ticket, I was unable to do my usual. Anyway, thanks for the heads up.-Andrew c (talk) 06:16, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Back in January you gave me some hints as to how to delete a file with a bad name. I appreciate that! Used the bad name template on the below pictures, however they were never speedy deleted. [edit] File:Stephen G. Haines.jpg
Hi, you allready checked OTRS about the File:Stephen G. Haines.jpg yesterday. Now I allready emailed Stephen G. Haines a week ago, and I didn't hear from him again. I guess he just changed his mind, or has better things to do.
One way or an other, I would like this file removed. Could we use the speedy delete procedure to do so. I allready spend a week checking, and I don't want to spend an other month (or more) monitoring the deletion procedure.
I guess I will not upload an other image before I get the conformation. Last time I sended forward the email I received to OTRS, and this time I asked the Haines to do it himself. I thought this was an easier way, but I guess I was wrong.
Now I would your advice here. Thank you. -- Marcel Douwe Dekker (talk) 19:22, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for your advice. I will just let the bots do their work, and experience how that works. -- Marcel Douwe Dekker (talk) 22:20, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
[edit] File:Lightning Bolt.jpg
Hi, I noticed that you deleted File:Lightning Bolt.jpg, with the explanation of "Missing essential information: source, license and/or permission". I'm messaging you now to clarify exactly what the problem was, since the image was being used based on GFDL permission from the author, which has been logged with the OTRS system. It's been a while since I uploaded the file, so I'm unaware of any problems it might have, and the vague explanation given in the edit summary doesn't provide much answers. Additionally, I'm curious why it was deleted so quickly and without discussion. Any information you could provide would be much appreciated. Drewcifer3000 (talk) 17:52, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick reply! All of that makes sense. I think somewhere along the line everything got confusing since it was transferred from the English Wiki (where I uploaded it, with OTRS ticket and all, I believe) to Commons (where I can only assume someone else just did a shoddy job of transferring the OTRS tag). Based on the email I received back from the OTRS system back in 2007, the ticket number for the image should be #2007073110021116. If you could check on that, I'd appreciate it. Alternatively, I'm not sure what your level of clearance is, so to speak, but is there any way you can check the original English wiki page for the image (en:File:Lightning Bolt.jpg) to see if all the info was there in a correct fashion before the transfer? Either way would probably work, so whatever works best. Please let me know if either of these options are something you can do. Thanks! Drewcifer3000 (talk) 04:47, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
-
- Awesome, thanks for the assistance! As a related note, I've uploaded quite a few images directly to the English Wiki (before I got this Commons account), and I've noticed alot of the images that were eventually transferred over have had similar problems with information not being transferred correctly. I couldn't give you any clear examples, since I've been a little MIA around here lately, but I've noticed stuff like this before. I'm not very active here on Commons, so this is a little bit out of my realm of expertise, but I figured it would be good to bring it up to you, at least. There might be a problem with a bot (as you mentioned), or maybe just a procedural thing needs to be worked out. Not really sure how it can be fixed or what to do, but I just wanted to let you know that this seems to be a reoccurring problem. Thanks for the help regardless. You do good work. I'm looking at this section of the noticeboard... and I wonder if we could be a bit easier on these folk. :) Best, NonvocalScream (talk) 05:53, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
- I believe I was more than civil in that situation, and I think it is a terrible precedent to allow users to "bump" their OTRS by posting to the message board. I would urge you not to handle someones ticket just because they posted on the message board. There were say 40 tickets sent in in front of the one mentioned on the noticeboard. Those 40 are less important because they didn't whine about having to wait 3 days when there was a backlog?? Sorry if I am getting defensive. I mean this in the most constructive manner. No hard feelings. -Andrew c (talk) 17:06, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Im new to the commons
hi andrew
I am new to the commons, and registered after literally stumnling in when looking for an image in a public domain on the internet. Obviously, I was very impressed with what I found here, and registered right away to browse all the information on here, and to contribute as well.
I have created a few pages, some linked to wikipedia as well, but I am finding the syntax a little difficult. I can and will muddle my way through it on my own, but before I go messing up a large number of referenced pages that I create, then having to go back tracking to repair anything, I am looking for some advice from an experienced member who can check over what I have done so far, and let me know if I am doing things correctly.
I have a few questions regarding copyright [for intance, if I modify a PD image for the commons, I should then upload it under the same PD license right?], but have no idea where to direct them, and I really would like to know what the OTRS Account thing is all about, and how to see replies from people I have talked to [for instance, I will have no idea how to find your reply to this once I submit it]
anyway, thats all for now. I love this site.
Julie
[edit] User:Archi Spotter
In the main site I have seen no release under a free licence anywhere, and there's instead the "© CivicArts / Eric R Kuhne & Associates, 2009" at the bottom. It seems clear as water that such site is not releasing anything freely. There are 2 options: the webmaster is making a legal mess, by uploading images for free somewhere and claiming copyright for them somewhere else... or we are simply dealing with an imposter that steals image from a site to upload them here, or even worse, though Flickr. The fact that he was using the copyright claim as authorship seemed as a clear "mistake" to suspect the later, and if was working under good intentions he would have answered the warnings that he had already received. Anyway, if he was truly the original uploader, the OTRS should prove it, and someone with access to it would restore the files if everything is right. But I doubt it: I have checked again at Flickr, and the images have been deleted by a request by Civic Arts. Belgrano (talk) 20:45, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Problems with migration from Wikipedia to Commona
A while ago you helped me out with File:Lightning Bolt.jpg, in that during it's migration from Wikipedia to Commons, the information and description stuff got lost in the process, and so it was deleted since it was missing all that stuff. I also mentioned that it wasn't an isolated instance, but I couldn't think of any examples then and there. Well here's one: File:AIR flier.jpg. Like I said above, this seems to be a reoccurring problem. Beyond my just showing you this, I was hoping you could work some magic and recover the data that was lost during the migration, since I'd have a hard time recreating it this long after I uploaded it. Thanks either way! Drewcifer3000 (talk) 00:56, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- I've dug the summary out of the deleted file on en.wiki and added it here. Hope this is what you were asking for. -Andrew c (talk) 03:13, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
-
- Perfect. Thank you! Drewcifer3000 (talk) 04:49, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

-
- Sorry to bug you again, but I found another one where the info has been lost mid-migration: File:Melissa Auf der Maur.jpg. Do you think you could recover the info for me? Perhaps you could tell me where I can raise these questions in the future, instead of bugging you about it? My main question I guess would be where could I raise the issue of badly migrated images? This is a reoccurring problem I'd like to see fixed, so where do you think I could raise such concerns? Thanks again! Drewcifer3000 (talk) 08:40, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] OTRS
Thanks for the suggestion, and I have been asked that before. However, I believe that we're more likely to be able to get images if the author has to do as little work as possible. I've asked authors in the past to change the license, and although some do, they usually found it confusing or took too much effort. Today I had a lot of single images, so that's why I probably have so many OTRS requests open. Usually though, I tend to get entire Flickr sets or photostreams available for use under free licenses, and it would definitely be a pain for the author to change each one. Maybe down the line I'll work to become a trusted OTRS reviewer so that I can help with the backlogs. I know I probably haven't made too many friends with the OTRS volunteers but hopefully the number of images released under free licenses helps. Anyway, thanks again for letting me know. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 02:33, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- I know you are a trusted user... but generally speaking (and I usually am a kind, accepting person) I just ignore all requests from Flickr via OTRS. We have a Flickrreview process set up for that, and Flickrmail is not compatible with OTRS. Meaning, I cannot CC or e-mail directly a flickr user for verification through the OTRS system. If I had it my way, I'd make a rule that all Flickr mail would be denied from OTRS, and redirect the users to Flickr reivew. Sorry if that makes me a bad guy :[ Anyway, please be patient for these last tickets as we are quite backlogged at the moment.-Andrew c (talk) 02:43, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- I understand your point. I do use Flickrreview on occasion if the image is already available under a compatible license. I'll probably keep up with this method as I believe it ensures the most success in getting celebrity images. Feel free to ignore my submissions (I'm in no big rush and understand the burden I place on the system), I'd rather everybody else's be taken care of first. I've had requests to become an OTRS reviewer, and once I finish a few long-term projects on Wikipedia, I'll probably sign up and help with the backlogs. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 06:11, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, I signed up to volunteer at OTRS (I must not be feeling well...). I'll try to help out with permissions occasionally (at least to offset as many permissions I nominate). Enjoy your vacation. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 05:04, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Genevieve Nnaji's picture
Hi. Your assistance is needed in this case here. A few days ago I uploaded this picture to wikimedia commons. I then got the written email permission from the owner of the picture and forwarded the email to permissions-commons-at-wikimedia.org. After that I contacted someone with an OTRS account, Trixt. Trixt confirmed the permission and fully released the picture under the required license. A few days later Trixt tagged the picture with the "Personality rights warning" tag. I asked Trixt why this is being done. You can read the reply of Trixt here and here on our talk pages. Finally, Trixt wrote me, saying that his english is bad, that I should get in touch with an English admin, that he doesn't know what to do.
I have checked through many wikipedia pages and have taken a close look at the pictures used from wikimedia commons. There are loads of pictures that do not have the "Personality rights warning" tag. Trixt claims that all pictures of living people should have that tag. This claim makes the whole issue suspicious. If all pictures of living people must be tagged with the "Personality rights warning", and the only way to properly upload pictures into wikimedia-commons is to get the approval of someone with an OTRS account, then what happened to all those pictures AFTER they were confirmed by someone with an OTRS account? How come those people with OTRS accounts didn't immediately tag these pictures with the "Personality rights warning" tag, the way Trixt did to the picture I uploaded? This looks like a double standard, and I thusly ask you to look into this and please remove the "Personality rights warning" tag from the picture in question.
The picture in question shows a nigerian actress, Genevieve Nnaji, in 2008 at a public event, the launch of Genevieve's new fashion label. Genevieve Nnaji is one of the top nigerian Nollywood actresses. She is also a model. Her pictures are all over Nigeria and Africa on billboards (she is the Face of Lux 2004), and she has played in over 100 Nollywood movies. Thus Genevieve Nnaji is a "person of contemporary history". She is a public figure. The picture I uploaded was taken by Niyi Tabiti, a nigerian journalist. Mr Tabiti has fully agreed to the full usage of the picture under wikimedia commons license. There are no personality right infringed with the usage of this picture. If wikimedia-commons claims, like Trixt does, that all pictures of living persons SHOULD be tagged, then this rule must apply to all pictures on wikimedia-commons. The fact that wikimedia-commons has thousands of pictures of living persons without the "Personality rights warning" proves that different standards are being applied to different pictures. I thereby ask you to please remove the "Personality rights warning" from this picture. Thank you.

[edit] OTRS question
Hey Andrew, I'm from a non-profit news org in Alberta, and I want to request a OTRS ticket ( as ticket #2008082610013775) http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20090819_Caster_Semenya.jpg. I'm not sure exactly what I'm doing, so please let me know if this is the correct means by which I should be requesting OTRS images.
- I'm not exactly sure what you are asking for. What do you think you need the "ticket" for? When an image has an OTRS ticket attached to it, it is just a fancy way of saying that someone e-mailed a permission declaration to us related to that image. If you are from a news organization, and you want to re-use an image on the commons, see COM:REUSE. All of the images on the Commons are licensed freely, which means generally speaking you are free to use the image, as long as you abide by the terms of the license. You do not need my or OTRS permission (nor a ticket) to re-use our images. If I am mistaken what you are asking, please forgive me. Perhaps you are trying to upload/donate images to us, in that case you very well may need an OTRS ticket attached to those images to demonstrate that we have that permission on file. Anyway, hope this explains this a bit better, I know it can be confusing at first. If you have further questions, or if I can help you our in any other way, feel free to post again!-Andrew c (talk) 04:27, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Help deleting an image with no licence please
hi, can you help me please. I've just started uploading photos...I've uploaded the same image twice because I accidentally forgot to click the licence thing when uploading the first one. I've left notes on both...can you help me delete the one without a licence? this is the file name - File:Matavai Village with Mata o le Alelo pool sign by the road, Savai'i, Samoa.JPG (sorry, i didn't think of changing the second one i loaded). Many thanks Teinesavaii (talk) 14:37, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- It appears you don't need anything deleted. In the future, if you forget to add anything during the upload process, you can always add whatever you want by clicking the big "edit" tab at the top of the page. For a list of license tags, you can see COM:TAG. The information template can be found Template:Information. I've fixed your image. You should check out the "edit" button to view what the code looks like. Also, you can review the "history" tab to see what changes I made. Hope this helps. -Andrew c (talk) 14:44, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
[edit] response
Sorry, I was away for the holidays. If you feel that the new information indicates that the original permission was flawed, by all means, remove the OTRS tag and flag it for deletion. Thanks for letting me know. -- Avi (talk) 15:58, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've e-mailed them again, apologized for the confusion, and asked if they could send in a permission from the cited author. Thanks for understanding, and hopefully this is satisfactory. -Andrew c (talk) 14:48, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
[edit] An inquiry
Hello Andrew, I uploaded an image several weeks ago. User:GiW has received permission from Lithuania's Defense Ministry to use such photos from their website. I sent a letter To permissions-commons-at-wikimedia.org with details, however the image is not approved yet, while others are : [1][2] etc. Could you please clarify the situation. Thanks, M.K. (talk) 11:13, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
- That image was not listed in your e-mail. I've added the ticket to it because it clearly comes from the same source the original permission applied to. -Andrew c (talk) 14:11, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Template for images from Lithuanian Ministry of Defense ?
Sorry for trouble you again, as I uploaded bunch of useful images from Lithuanian Ministry of Defense www.kam.lt again(on 10.25, btw they awaiting validation too), I concluded that www.kam.lt site is a gold mine of various pictures. However it is quite unpractical every time send mails to Wikimedia OTRS system for validation, so perhaps it is possible to create standard permission template for them? M.K. (talk) 12:32, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
- Hey, good idea. I've created Ministry of Defense - Lithuania. I'm going to set up AWB to change the 35 existing images to that template. Feel free to use the template as well for new uploads related to that ticket. Make sure you provide a link to the image on kam.lt for verification purposes. Thanks. -Andrew c (talk) 17:32, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
Hi, have question about this template and OTRS as well. Does Ministry of Defence of Lithuania granted permission to use any image from kam.lt website under GFDL or just some particular images? Can you please clarify OTRS 2009040110056227 ticket details --Justass (talk) 21:19, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm... I thought the template was phrased clearly: Photographs from www.kam.lt are released under the following license: GFDL. Can you please tell me what you need cleared up? How do you think we should rephrase the template to make it clear that photographs from kam.lt are released under the GFDL? -Andrew c (talk) 22:11, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Image of St. Anthony wrongly deleted

- Do all images on Wikipedia have to be free? That is my Flickr account. I will change the copyright status to free. Can I license it for free but not so someone can use it to make money? (not that they would). By the way almost all the Sai Baba images floating around are in the public domain with no copyright. It is almost impossible to find the location and author of the thousands of images available. I think this is fair use, no? I wouldn't call the uploading of Sai Baba images a "violation". If I bought a photograph in India of Sai Baba but it has no known author, location or copyright, you are saying I can't upload it to Wikipedia? 207.137.2.162 22:18, 9 November 2009 (UTC) This is sbs108 I forgot to log in Sbs108 (talk) 00:26, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Non-copyrightable Virginia logo
Hi Andrew, it looks like we were both off. Even though you got it from a pseudo-official source (a private company hired by the University to run the athletics website) the color should be exactly #FF7003 by the school's logo guidenlines. See www.virginia.edu/uvalogo/guidelines/. That wasn't quite the color I had either, but I will try to correct the image. Just wanted to give you a heads up! Omnibus (talk) 21:28, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- Actually I didn't change it yet. Figured I'd shoot an email to the Graphic Identity page for clarification first, just to make sure it applies to athletics logos. Omnibus (talk) 21:56, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the Notepad tip, Andrew. That seems a lot easier than fumbling through Inkscape, so I'll go ahead and do it that way! (Will change it back if the email comes back different than expected.) Omnibus (talk) 22:40, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
