If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.

[edit] Size of PNG pictures

Hello,

Thnk you for having reduce the size of one of my picture (steel). I did not know it was possible. can you explain how you did it. I cannot find it on my software (photoshop elements).

Regards

Hi Andrew. I've noticed your "optipng" uploads. Just wanted to mention: in my experience, pngrewrite followed by advpng compresses smaller. They're both free command-line programs like optipng. Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 29 June 2005 01:51 (UTC)
How do you compile pngrewrite under Linux with GCC? It refuses to compile, giving me error messages. Andrew pmk 29 June 2005 01:57 (UTC)
Just do "gcc -lpng pngrewrite.c -o pngrewrite". The Makefile is broken.  :( dbenbenn | talk 29 June 2005 01:58 (UTC)

[edit] Flag of Brno

I'm from Brno, and it's flag hasn't any red border. --Kirk 29 June 2005 10:12 (UTC)

I reverted this edit. The jpeg image you uploaded (which I converted to PNG) had a red border. Cheers, Andrew pmk 29 June 2005 15:48 (UTC)

[edit] Volleyball PNG's

I'm surprised. I use The Gimp for these tasks and I'm very zealous of reducing colors as much as possible. I think that I left a 31 or 63 palette for both of these. What was wrong? It's obvious that images are now smaller...

BTW.: I've been messing with categories... I was triying to organize a bit and later I read the discussion about using categories or not. Now that there's an index page I brought out (back) the category line. I'm a newcommer, you see...

Thanks a lot.

[edit] Trans Continental Images

I find that the color of these map changed suddenly. I have to change the caption. :( BTW....

Image:TransAmerica.PNG

Can you color the south part of Panama as light green?

Image:TransOceania.PNG

Can you color the oceanian part of Indonesia (and East Timor, of course) as light green?

Image:TransAfrica.PNG

You missed this one. However, can you color the asian part of Egypt as light green? Not the part of africa.

I think these change will emphasize the bicontinetal countries... and easy to explain.

Thanks for uploading Image:Dmz.png. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate category and optionally place the images on topic pages (galleries), or do both (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. Siebrand 10:00, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] PNG vs SVG

I'm interested in figuring out how to render images in SVG. Do you know of any online tutorials that would help get me started? I need to create a bunch of film-flag icons, similar to Image:Australiafilm.svg, and rather than do them in PNG and have to have someone else convert them, I wouldn't mind trying to learn my how myself. Thanks! Wisekwai 21:58, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

I do have Inkscape, but am experiencing a bit of steep learning curve on it. The other immediate problem I have is I don't know how to get my Windows XP machine to recognize the svg extender. It automatically labels them as png, which defeats the purpose. I'm probably asking a lot from you right now, needing technical advice and all ... I just need a boost in the right direction, if you can help. Thanks again. Wisekwai 07:30, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the links! I'll play around and see what I can accomplish. I meant file extension -- .svg, .png, etc. -- my computer doesn't seem to recognize .svg, and treats the file like it's an Explorer file. I don't know what to do. :( Anyway, enough moaning from me. I'll get to work. Thanks again for the help! Wisekwai 21:28, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] BlankMap-World6.svg

Thanks so much to the improvements you made on the map! This is more or less what I was hoping to do, but not able to. A couple minor nits I noticed, though:

 • The borders as part of the country was the main thing I wanted to fix, but couldn't find a solution. The first thing that came to me was the idea you used, the outline tool, but that presents a problem with coastlines then. Say, for example, a person wants a country's borders in black. Changing the outline to black (on all 229 countries!) would accomplish that, but then the coastlines are now all black too, not nearly as visually appealing as the white one.
 • My separate layer for the small countries seems to be gone (there's just the one layer for the map itself.) You can select the uppercase ISO codes, but the circles don't show up. Can this be fixed?
 • The W-E German border, and internal Serbian borders, are now visible. There might be others that I didn't catch.

Otherwise, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! --Canuckguy 18:08, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Fixed most of the problems listed above myself - restored the circles and fixed the problems with Germany and Serbia. Still would like to fix the border situation that I mentioned earlier - I hypothesize that if the ocean object can be made to be the shpae of the actual ocean, rather than a blue background (and set it above the landmass) then we can just set the outline of the ocean to blue, while the outline of the countries is black (or whatever colour you want the borders) and it would be resolved. --Canuckguy 00:35, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello Andrew pmk!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Commons images are used by editors on many projects in many languages. Each image is put into categories. This helps other editors find them. Please add categories to each image you upload.

To add an image to a category, add the following code to the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbit of comets, add the following to the image description page:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories: Astronomy diagrams, Comets.

For further information on categories read Commons:Categories.

The CommonSense Tool often helps you find the best category for your image.

Here is a gallery of your images. Please check that each image has a category. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the help desk. Thank you.
