[edit] Blank maps: 1990 and 2000 + Kosovo, Scotland

Thanks for Annoatating my uploads of Image:BlankMap-World-2000.png and Image:BlankMap-World-1990.png! It really brings order to chaos. Also, since Serbia has held their elections and the UN is prepared to announce their plan for Kosovo, I have updated blank maps ready for whatever the outcome is. I also plan on doing blank mps with Scotland on them as well later this year if the SNP wins the elections to Holyrood, if not, then no. Hoshie 04:16, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

On second thought, I've decided to wait to do blank maps for Scotland, since i'm not entirely sure the SNP will win, or if they win, a referendum will even be held. Two other map things:
1) St.-Martin and St.-Barthelemy voted in 2003 to become overseas collectivities of France. After four years, this proposal will happen by spring. Because of this, I have an updated version of Image:BlankMap-World-v6.png ready once ISO assigns codes to these islands. On 1 July, the Netherlands Antilles will cease to exist. Three of the islands will become apart of the Netherlands (think French Guiana); the other two, Curacao and Sint Maarten, will have the same status as Aruba. Since they are on the map already, IMHO - no update is needed.
2) Until 2000 (when an agreement was signed), the boundry between [N and S] Yemen and Saudi Arabia did not exist. on the blank maps from 1970 to 2000, i've marked the boundry with a shade of grey that doesn't blend in the darker gray. I hope this is ok. Hoshie 08:03, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
I've uploaded the maps from the 70's to 1993 with no boundary between Saudi and Yemen. I hope you like them. Also, i'm going to add the Neutral Zones to the WWII map. Also I plan on putting Ifni (Spanish enclave) on the pre 1969 maps as well. As for the Yemen thing, here are the sources: CIA map of Yemen from 1999, and CIA map of the Mid-East from 1976. Hoshie 09:47, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Canal Zone

I have added the Canal Zone for the 1921 and 1957-1970 maps. I have also added a note to the talk page of the 1985 map about the end of the Iraq/Saudi Arabia Neutral Zone. It would also nice to have maps for the turn of the century and the late 1940's-1956. The ends of the Saudi-Iraqi N.Z., the Canal Zone, and Ifni are noted on the description pages as well. Hoshie 05:51, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] A couple of maps

Astrokey, I have to apologise that I inadvertently uploaded Image:Australia_1838.jpg and Image:Australia_1916_western_australia.jpg without noticing that you already had. Both sources are identical and so hopefully no harm was done. Sorry anyway. Moondyne 13:52, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

The funny think is that I'm almost certain that I didn't get a message warning me I was about to overwrite a file. I can only assume I had my eyes closed when that popped up and I pressed "Save anyway". Moondyne 22:43, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Antarctica territorial claims.png

I have made some mild fixes to this map. You had the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man shaded in red with the rest of the UK; this isn't correct. The CIA Factbook says: Guernsey is a British crown dependency, but is not part of the UK. [1] (The line is the same for Jersey and the Isle of Man). I have also shaded Guadeloupe, Martinique, & Reunion in blue with French Guiana since they are a part of France as well. Hoshie 03:39, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Please update your map

Your map in the List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita of Wikipedia - should be updated, according to the new 2006 figures. I've added an "update" message - at the top of the the article. This message should be deleted once you update your map. 80.230.2.240 00:06, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Holy Roman Empire 1648.svg

Just so you know, I think this is the best map of any kind I have ever seen in my life. Well done. It's perfect, and the description page should be set in gold and framed in the offices of Wikimedia. It is what vector graphics were designed for. You officially go on my list of most admired Commonists. I'm about to nominate it as a featured picture on Wikipedia. — Vanderdeckenξφ 14:23, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

Regarding the map in the List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita of Wikipedia: Sorry for a temporary confusion. Some days ago I really left you a message here, as you correctly indicated in my discussion page of wikipedia. I would be happy to listen to your opinion about the problem of leaving the map as it is now in the article List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita. I think this map can't stay in the article, because the List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita refers to 2006 figures, and the map (though updated) refers to 2005 figures. The other alternative is to edit another map which will represent 2006 figures. What do you think? Eliko.

Would you be so kind as to give me permission to update the abovementioned image, as it is more than a year old? If not, please think about making the necessary updates yourself.

[edit] Australian exploration maps

I've just nominated a heap of maps for deletion because they are basically encarta images with lines on top; you're probably familiar with these; I was hoping that you could add making new versions of them to your to do list since they're highly informative, but the copyright problems are obvious with the current versions. Thanks. --Peta 03:27, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Need your name for attribution

Hello, I am publishing one of your maps and am required by the GFDL to give you attribution, but I do not know your name. Could you please tell me so that I can fulfill the requirements of the license? --Munchkinguy 01:04, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Alright, but it seems to defeat the purpose of an attribution license if the creator of a copyrighted work insists on not having their name associated with that work. --Munchkinguy 00:24, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Holy Roman Empire Map

I'm sure I won't be the first person to thank you for producing this fantastic map. I'm trying to use this in ArcGIS, and was wondering if the version online is the most complete available - or do you have a local version based on polygons rather than lines?

Also, any guess as to the projection? Some kind of conic, but unfortunately the original source (or at least the 1970s edition in my library) doesn't include any information about projections. I can try to find it by brute force, but I figured it might be quicker to see if someone had already figured it out... :p

Anyways, thanks again!

Hi there Roke; this image is used to head a list of F-4 Phantom II non-U.S. operators in a Wikipedia article of the same name, but an editor quite rightly remarked that for this purpose the U.S. area should not be coloured green. [edit] Omeo map

Hi there,

I notice the map of Omeo you uploaded is incorrectly spelt as 'Omco' in the image title, file history and possibly in the map itself - although the writing is small so it's hard to tell. The wikipedia page it links to is also misspelt. I am referring to the file [[3]].

I'm a little new to Wikipedia (and just signed up to Wikimedia today) so I'm not really sure how to go about correcting the image title.

Please feel free to mention on my talk page anything I may have missed and whether you can fix this (fairly minor) spelling error!

Thanks

[edit] Olympic Games Countries maps

Both the German and the English wikipedia state that the DPR Korea participated in the 1972 Olympic Games for the first time. Therefore, the DPR Korea should be marked in blue in the 1972 map and should be deleted in the former maps. --84.149.208.51 10:08, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Hello, sorry for the mistake, fixed now. The 1964 and 1968 olympic museum site list the "Korea, People Rep. " which is meant to mean South Korea. This must be a mistake or a former name for S.Korea? --Roke 04:04, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] File:1952 Olympic games countries.PNG

South Korea should be displayed in green. 1948 Summer Olympics for the first time in South Korea participated. (Talk to Moo) 06:18, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

I did change it, then reverted after I saw w:Korea at the 1948 Summer Olympics. It was the first time South Korea competed. In 1948 Korea competed as a unified country. --Roke 02:57, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Australia history.gif

I like the Australia history.gif file, and I have used it on another language Wikipedia. Now though .gif files are not well supported; it appears fuzzy.

I am no wizard with animated files. If you know of a way to do a version of file in a better supported format that would be good.

Hello Roke!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Commons images are used by editors on many projects in many languages. Each image is put into categories. This helps other editors find them. Please add categories to each image you upload.

To add an image to a category, add the following code to the end of the page.

[[Category:Category Name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbit of comets, add the following to the image description page:

[[Category:Astronomy diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories: Astronomy diagrams, Comets.

For further information on categories read Commons:Categories.

The CommonSense Tool often helps you find the best category for your image.

Here is a gallery of your images. Please check that each image has a category. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the help desk. Thank you.

[edit] Map Projection Used? File:BlankMap-USA-states-Canada-provinces.png

Hi Roke,

I was wondering if you could tell me what projection method/parameters you used to generate this map?

I really like the proportions and would like to generate similar maps for other regions of the world.

Thanks!

[edit] Largest World Subdivisions Population

Please consider adding something to the legend (or image page) of Image:Largest World Subdivisions Population.png to indicate that the numbers listed in the legend are the ranking. You do comment that the data is from the list pages, but there's nothing that clearly indicates that the numbers are the ranking. 99.189.64.58 00:27, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Licensing Exception for BlankMap-USA-states-Canada-provinces.png

Hello Roke!

I'd like to use an SVG map created by Lokal Profil in an application I'm assembling for my small start-up company. I believe it is a derivative work of your map, BlankMap-USA-states-Canada-provinces.png.

I'm happy to credit you guys and Wikimedia Commons in my application, but I would like to (eventually) make this application available as a commercial offering. I believe I would need both of you to agree to an exception to the 'share-alike' provisions of the CC-BY-SA license, or for you to allow me use of this image under a separate non-exclusive commercial license.

Lokal has agreed to an exception pending your approval.

In case you're interested, the application I'm building is a data analysis tool for electric utilities. One of the features we've designed renders a thematic map based on the data set the user is looking at (e.g. total smart meters per state/province). At present, the plan is to make the basic features of our application publicly available. Longer term we would be looking to offer a "premium edition" for profit.

I'm a bit of a "starving entrepreneur" at the moment, but I could offer you some small amount of compensation for your efforts. Perhaps more interestingly, if the application takes off I may need similar regional maps for other parts of the world.

Please let me know your thoughts and how we may best get in touch.

(contact by email)

Regards,

---jmh (talk) 06:19, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Fine by me. It was originally GNU and share alike anyway. --Roke 09:34, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! Let me at least hook you up with a little something for your effort. I'd like to credit you in our application, too. Reply privately via my email and we'll work out the details.

[edit] Australia big things map

Hi there. I'm just curious, there was a story on The 7PM Project just now about the Big Prawn being demolished, and they used a map of the big things around Australia. Was it, by any chance, your map? --timsdad 10:01, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] South Australia Map

I found a map that shows the four most recently created counties in South Australia (Bosanquet, Buxton, Hore-Ruthven, Le Hunte), so I was thinking that you could make an updated South Australia map if you like. --Lazar Taxon (talk) 06:24, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

This map appears to show Ireland as part of the United Kingdom. This is obviously incorrect.
