Boilerplate texts[edit]

Hi. I did not quite understand what boilerplate text you want. I have some here. Give me more details what you want to say, and I'll gladly help out. BTW, I am native german, english is a second language for me. Also, with unused images: It seems the new category method in the new version of MediaWiki will automatically include thumbnails, making image pages unnecessary. This is still under discussion on the village pump [1]. -- Chris 73 00:28, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Ah, clearer now. Also, the "Villy" got me confused for a moment. As for the text: How about my second boilerplate:
Hi Could you add the umages you uploaded to a page in one of our Categories (see the [[Main Page] for a list of categories). If possible do not add the image to a category directly but insert the image to a subpage in one of the categories. For example, Images of "Roald Amundsen" would go to the page [[Roald Amundsen]], which is categorized in [[:Category:Explorers]]. Thanks -- ~~~~

A bientôt ... j'espère. Bises. villy 10:57, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Bon, j'ai "restructuré" et fait des commentaires. Dans le même style, et pompé sur l'idée de soufron, voir Cpyright stuff, un d"but, mais je voudrais que sur Commons les choses soient plus simples qu'ailleurs, question copyright. Biz. notafish }<';> 18:59, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Persian Astrolabe[edit]

Short note to let you know I've copied your picture Image:Astrolabe-Persian-18C.jpg in Commons and proposed it as a featured picture. It is extremely beautiful ... villy 16:06, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hi Villy, glad you like it - you wouldn't guess it was taken through glass would you? As you probably know, that photo is about a day away from becoming a featured picture on the English Wiki. I have yet to get round to moving my other photos over to the Commons. I think there is a script to help automate it, but I've also yet to decide weather the Commons is friendly enough for licensing via cc-by-sa. -- Solipsist 21:58, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Okay. Eventually I hope you'll come to the conclusion that yes, Commons is friendly enough for any purpose related to your work :) villy 06:58, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Its really a question of the GFDL notice for copyright holders on the upload page, which obstructs cc-by-sa licensing. The same thing applies to the English Wiki upload page, but that upload page has numerous errors and is largely invalid, so it doesn't bother me. (Although I've had editors try and change the license on images without my agreement.) There were predictions that the upload page would improve to allow selecting the copyright-tag during upload for the Commons and/or MediaWiki 1.4, but we've got both of those now and the upload page is still fairly similar. -- Solipsist 08:38, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Image:Milice ecole.jpg[edit]

I've submitted Image:Milice ecole.jpg for deletion because I think it conflicts with Commons copyright policy to use images that are copyrighted even if enforcement of the copyright seems unlikely or impossible. User:David.Monniaux, who uploaded the image, said you had told him it was acceptable. Maybe you'd like to weigh in on the matter at Commons:Deletion requests#Image:Milice_ecole.jpg? -- Sebastian Koppehel 13:28, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I do think that, considering the circumstances, the copyright of this picture is highly virtual. Yet I gave a positive answer to David on IRC, thinking of an upload on the french Wikipédia; I had not in mind an upload on Commons - where I agree the rules have to be as safe as possible. villy 15:39, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thanks[edit]

Thanks! By the way, a minor policy question - is it okay/suggested that older versions of an image I made (i.e. it's not like I built off another image and uploaded with the same name) be speedily deleted? Otherwise, they're just filling up space (Minor, but still) and are generally useless. --Golbez 08:21, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

User:Aurevilly/sxc.hu and Category:Stock.xchng photographs[edit]

Hi Aurevilly,

I like your analysis at User:Aurevilly/sxc.hu; thanks for writing that. There's only one point I disagree with. At the end, you conclude that Category:Stock.xchng photographs should be deleted.

I'm the one who created that category. The reason I did it was not to keep stock.xchng images from being used. Indeed, I'm the uploader of three of the images in that category. Instead, I simply thought it would be useful to have image source categories. We have topic, type, author, and licence categories; why not source categories too?

Cheers, Dbenbenn 07:48, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

One Question: Did you write the site admins of that page an email, that their disclaimer contains things they can't demand? (of course in a friendly way). I think asking is much more easier than a big voting here on commons. (and I'll ask them if it has not been done yet). Arnomane 23:24, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

No I did not. I am mainly interested by elaborating a Commons consistent policy more than, at least for the moment, contributing to external sites better terms of use:) villy 07:00, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Kinsey[edit]

There must be a misunderstanding. The work is not copyrighted. You can see from the image it is over one hundred years old, it cannot be copyrighted. You have mistaken the copyright policies regarding "any work or authorship (hereafter the "work") under the control of the Institute or copyrighted by the Institute" which means created by the Institute, things such as it's journals, etc. Apollomelos 13:37, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)
You may be right. I suggest you make this answer on the Commons:Deletion requests entry in order for everybody to know your position. To be frank, even if I suspect it, I have no exact idea that the picture is over one hundred years old and I don't want the Commons to take any chance about it. Cheers, villy 13:44, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hey there! Sorry for the delay - I didn't have much time for Wiki. You've been asking for a legal status of the mentioned picture. Well, in fact it was taken from Wikipedia and there was a link from the pic's page to the page on enWiki (due to technical problems with Wiki engine then I did not made the whole description - sorry, my fault. The picture is the sepia version of en Wiki's pic, as written there and it is a PD (it's pretty old so it's highly probable). I change the description there, although thank you for correcting me and for showing templates. I will have to do similar things with other pics. See You! Aegis Maelstrom 10:59, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi villy. I wish you hadn't deleted Image:WW2 Iwo Jima flag raising.jpg prematurely. I was in the process of transferring information to en:Image:WW2 Iwo Jima flag raising.jpg, where the image will be kept. Could you please undelete the image description page (temporarily!)? Alas, it appears from Special:Log/Delete that there were two revisions; but that information is lost now. User:Schaengel89[edit]

He gets the English I guess. So do not worry about that. The Article/Category talk is old and I do not want to get into another discussion about that. Personally I prefer articles and putting articles in categories. For one thing to make things like in de:Bílá Hora. Looks a bit stupid if there would be a link on "category:Bílá Hora". Other thing is that pictures in categories may not be sorted by anything (there is only a stupid alphabetical order). I prefer to have pictures in categories instead of having nothing at all but if someone makes a good article it is worth more than the category. This is only my opinion. And I had a talk with Duesentrieb too about this. He does completely not agree on my article Praha and at the same time having a Category Praha. His argument is that it is a lot of work (and some other stuff). Yes it is. So if someone just wants to upload images and put them in categories fine. If someone makes the work and makes a good article better (but please put the article in some category!). I understand Duesentrieb too. We agree though that categories are a mess. I personally totally dislike them because they could be nice but people do not know how to use them properly.

About {{pd-old}} sorry that must have been a mistake from him (but a minor). I keep watching him. He has already done a big mistake by uploading a nonfree Hitler image and he got 2 emails from 2 German users because we got a very friendly but determinant email from the owners. Friendly greetings and keep up the good work. cu --Paddy 03:18, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Commons count[edit]

Hi Villy,

could you tell me who updated the Commons media file count? Did you do it yourself or did a developer do it, and if so, who? I need to know so I can reproduce the methodology. Thanks, --Eloquence 05:21, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Image:Roasted coffee beans.jpg[edit]

I have no idea what's going on here. I don't remember editing the image description page recently, and I certainly did not intend to blank anything. If you look at its history, you'll notice that the temporal order of edits is messed up: the first edit was on 2005-01-13, the second edit on 2005-02-05, and the third edit again on 2005-01-13 (earlier than the second one!). I suspect that this is a software and/or database glitch. For what it's worth, I am the creator of this image, but I don't consider myself the copyright holder, since I've released it into the public domain. --MarkSweep 22:06, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Neutrality[edit]

Neutrality, someone that you helped make admin has changed {{English}} which was the English flag to say (English) on two occassions... one, it's really ugly, two, it doesn't need a template. I suppose it is "neutral" to not have a British flag... because Americans or any other country that speaks English that is not Britain might be offended? I would like to hear your comments because I am at this pointing thinking it is a horrible move to remove the flag system we have been using.... Grenavitar 20:57, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Administrator Policy[edit]

At Blankfaze's adminship request you've written "The rules refer to a general agreement. Considering the uncertainty of the community about Blankfaze request (4 pros, 3 cons, 1 neutral) I've decided to give people more time. I'll close the vote on May, 12th and will make Blankfaze an admin in case of a clear 2/3 majority."

I think that this ("clear 2/3 majority") should be made clearer in the actual policy. I would also consider introducing a minimum number of (positive?) votes to prevent people with one positive vote becoming admin. — Richie 12:40, 7 May 2005 (UTC)

I did not intend to make a general rule to settle Blankfaze issue. It's my bureaucrat responsibility to interpret as well as possible the meaning of votes for adminship. In Blankfaze case, I felt it difficult because of the notion of general agreement, which is kind of vague. Now, it could be a good thing to follow the same rule as meta, which states : The request will stay here at least 1 week. Sysophood will be granted by a majority of at least 75%. Plus, maybe a minimum of 4 votes could be imposed, 4 full votes allowing the straight ratio 75 %. In my opinion though, that should be a decision from the community, which means a poll ; we are now too numerous on Commons to impose a general policy without consensus. So maybe we can launch a poll about it. villy 09:09, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
PS: meta also impose a requirement of 100 edits to make an admin request. That should be debated too.

Ton opinion ?[edit]

Bonjour,

  2. Category:Presidents of France. Yann 14:20, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

Inactive administrators[edit]

Hi villy. According to the criteria at Commons:Administrators#Inactive admins, User:Ilyanep is inactive. A total of 6 edits, all 9 months ago. I think this user should be de-sysoped. Dbenbenn 01:13, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Commons:Administrators#Inactive admins rules about inactivity on Commons for a full year. Regarding User:Ilyanep, last edit is 24 Sep 2004. Let's talk about him on 24 Sep 2005 :) villy 08:20, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Actually, it isn't "no edits in the last year". The rule is
  1. less than 50 edits in the last year (Ilyanep has only 6 edits total, so only 6 edits between June 11, 2004 and today), and
  2. no edits in the last 6 months (Ilyanep hasn't edited for 9 months)
Ilyanep definitely satisfies these criteria, and has since March 24. (No other current admin is "inactive". I checked them all!) dbenbenn | talk 16:49, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Delete mistake[edit]

I made a mistake when uploading image:VolleyballRotation.png, I tried to revert, once again,... And now there are three or four versions of the same file. It seems that an administrator is needed in order to do some cleanup and delete these "mistakes". The "desired" file is the 2404 bytes one. byj 2 July 2005 10:26 (UTC)

Hmm, the final image is absolutely correct. I was just trying to remove the previous mistakes from the history and remove all copies of the file but the last one. For the image, now everything is OK (but the three copies somewhere of identical files...) Thanks.
