[edit] Removing Categories

There is a reply at User talk:Mehmet Karatay#Removing Categories. I hope it makes some sense. Please ask if you need more help. Mehmet Karatay 22:50, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi ! First, thanks a lot for your great photos ! Awesome work. I see that you add categories named after common names to them. Could you instead use scientific names ? Since Commons is international, categories named after English common names make no sense. If these categories appear red, someone else will create them and link them to the genus or family category. Regards. PurpleHz 14:30, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi PurpleHz, as I'm new to wikipedia I'm learning many new ideas, unfortunately I'm having a few problems with categories....initially I added the scientific name but this was removed and only the category genus put on. Lot's of differing ideas I guess! Thanks for taking the time to tell me though, really appreciate it.Aviceda 18:09, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Sadly, there isn't an official policy on this matter, and there are two different groups, one wanting to go only by pages, the other only by categories. Articles (galleries) are more time consuming to create, and categories are easier to navigate. Anyway what's important is to help people to find your photos, so i think you should go with categories (that's less work and it saves you time to upload your photos ;-) If someone is undoing your work, i'll take care of him. [edit] Image:Jacky-Winter glendavis sept03.jpg

Hello Aviceda, the tagged image will be taken in charge by an administrator (it appears in an special category). I see that both images are tagged. You should only tag the one you want to be deleted. The only difference I see between them is the location : Glen Davis or Capertee ? Regards, PurpleHz 10:59, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

The Glen Davis one should be removed, the other is in use on the Jacky-Winter page.Aviceda 02:04, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Permissions

I think that you have to send the email from the original copyright holders to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. I got the following answer on the helpdesk:

See Commons:Email templates and Commons:OTRS. Do note that permission limited to Wikimedia projects is not sufficient per Commons:Licensing. Snowmanradio (talk) 12:10, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
I think that it would be a start to have your own photographs that are on both your website and on commons OTRS certified. Then when we know what to do we could upload the other photographs where there is permission. The email permission might need to cover several eventualities, so perhaps it would be easier to have a trail run with your own images, and get the wording of the email correct first, and it might save having to go back to the owners of the other images, to make a small change to the permission email. 86.151.252.87 13:26, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Mmmm, I'm not sure about this, I have some images that I cannot grant permission as they are in use elsewhere, will have to discuss this further. Aviceda (talk) 06:04, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
Off course, it is up to you which photographs to give to the wiki. Snowmanradio (talk) 06:38, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Where did you take Image:Nz boobook.JPG?

I have geotagged most other photos taken in Warkworth, and was wondering where you took this one. Richard001 (talk) 00:12, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Would you be able to locate it on Google maps? The geocoding proceedure is quite simple actually; maybe you could code it yourself? Richard001 (talk) 02:22, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Butterfly categorization

Hi, I've noticed you reverted some of my editions on butterfly images you uploaded. In general, the recommendation for categorization of animals in general is to keep them only in the most specific taxonomical group possible. In the case of you images, as most of them, fortunately, are identified to species level, they shouldn't be also put in other taxonomical levels. This hierarchical system aims exactly to avoid categories with lots of files. This doesn't apply, for example, if you want to classify these files by other means, as for example in categories like butterflies by country and others like that. Because of that, I would be glad if you could take the "Nymphalidae" category out of all these images you reverted. Thanks, Leonardo (talk) 23:40, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

To understand the categorization scheme, I think you could start reading this page: Commons:Categories. It gives some general guidelines. There is also a categorization cafe, in case of specific doubts. Leonardo (talk) 12:28, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you

.. for uploading all those wonderful clips; it's great to see video put to good use. :-) --Eloquence (talk) 02:52, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

If you want, I would really love to hear some more about your experience creating, uploading, playing video in Wikipedia - it's something I want us to support better, and getting stories of real contributors is critical to improving things.--Eloquence (talk) 04:09, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] File:Australian Koel juv.ogg

Hello, I notice a black and white bird feeding this young cuckoo. You don't mention it in the description/categories - do you know what species it is? Richard001 (talk) 01:37, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, I have added this info. I'm impressed with the gargantuan number of bird videos you've added. Richard001 (talk) 07:10, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
I wish they were all they were all better-quality, am hoping to get a decent video-camera in the near-future. Aviceda (talk) 13:13, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Rossella

Have you got any still photographs of this parrot; File:Pale-headed Rosella.ogg? Snowmanradio (talk) 14:57, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Bit busy at the moment, but will post one this 'arvo, when I get home from work. Aviceda (talk) 18:10, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
No hurry, I think User Casliber might be planning to make a DYK out of the Pale-headed Rosella article on the en wiki. I think that there are probably photographs of both subspecies on commons. Snowmanradio (talk) 18:30, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Confusion with File:Swamp Harrier96.ogg and File:Spha 0022w.JPG

Swamp Harrier96.ogg
Really C. approximans?
Appearance very untypical for C. assimilis

Hello Aviceda,

I was currently creating an article on the Spotted Harrier (Circus assimilis) on the German Wikipedia. I noticed that this picture which you categorized under assimilis shows a bird that lacks several distinctive features of the Spotted Harrier, such as the white-spotted rufous underpart which looks rather streaked in this picture.

In Addition to that, the bird in this video lacks the white rump of the Swamp Harrier and rather looks like a Spotted Harrier (except for the white parts), but I can hardly tell due to my bad video player and lacking knowledge of Australian birds.

Could you tell me how you identified these two species? I noticed that a lot of your harrier pictures were taken at Lake Samsonvale, where apparently both assimilis and approximans occur. Maybe the birds are juveniles, if so, it could be helpful to add that to the description, together with the sex of the birds.

Regards, Toter Alter Mann (talk) 11:52, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. You can mail me via Special:EmailUser/Toter_Alter_Mann. According to Ferguson-Lees, there is no difference between sexes of the Spotted Harrier (concerning colour, female is up to 25 % bigger), but the Swamp Harrier shows a dimorphism, see here, p. 145. (101a and 101d). However, the male Swamp Harrier is around 14 % smaller. I just saw that you have a lot of bird photos on flickr, so I think you should be right with your description since you seem to have a lot of experience in this field :)

[edit] File:Northern Fantail julatten jun02.JPG

I see this photo (well a different crop) is on Globaltwitcher and Birdforum uploaded 26 March 2007. Might need an email to OTRS just to prove you are the author? --Tony Wills (talk) 11:59, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, it is just standard practice to check the authorship of images that have previously been published elsewhere on the internet, if they weren't published under a free license there. Its just a matter of respecting the copyright asserted on those earlier uploads. I happened to notice those other versions when looking for a good illustration for a wikipedia article. The OTRS system simply allows you to confirm authorship by email. Its not something I personally am going to pursue, but the question will come up again sooner or later :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 12:43, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello Aviceda!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Commons images are used by editors on many projects in many languages. Each image is put into categories. This helps other editors find them. Please add categories to each image you upload.

To add an image to a category, add the following code to the end of the page.

[[Category:Category Name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbit of comets, add the following to the image description page:

[[Category:Astronomy diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories: Astronomy diagrams, Comets.

For further information on categories read Commons:Categories.

The CommonSense Tool often helps you find the best category for your image.

Here is a gallery of your images. Please check that each image has a category. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the help desk. Thank you.
