Language templates and other things[edit]

Hi, great work on all the information templates that you have been adding to images :-). I would like to mention that the language templates en, es etc should enclose the text for that language eg[1]. That makes it very easy for automated tools to select the right language :-).
Another thing to note is that there is now a working rename facility so that you do not need to waste space by re-uploading images under a new name. The rename still needs approval, but it doesn't require an admin to delete the old image (there is already too much work for admins to do, renaming only needs someone with "rename/move rights" to authorize it, and can be done quickly). In the particular case of File:Johannes Vermeer - The Glas of Wine - Ritanila.jpg it is in fact a smaller version of the file that we already have File:WLANL - Ritanila - IMG 2680.jpg (and file naming is not like article naming, the exact filename is really of little importance, renaming isn't essential). --Tony Wills (talk) 02:48, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. Greetz! --Bukk (talk) 09:15, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

information template (again)[edit]

Unfortunately, when you added an information template to File:As08-16-2593.jpg, you filled in several of the fields in an inappropriate and unsuitable way. Please exercise more care.... AnonMoos (talk) 17:11, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

I'll try to. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 17:52, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

LangSwitch[edit]

Hi, I just noticed this edit, and I suspect that you do not realize that

name=

statement means that users speaking English Spanish, French, Russian, etc. will not see the name of the person. name=Ottilie Roederstein would have been fine. I have corrected a lot of those at some point in institution templates (I did not checked if they were your edits or not). See also here for one way to create those. Greetings --Jarekt (talk) 13:00, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

OK, thank you. That helps. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 08:49, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

template:artwork[edit]

Hi I noticed that you edited a lot of files, adding own to files uploaded by user:Ribberlin but there is no evidence that these photos were taken by user:Ribberlin (actually I would bet they were not, which is perfectly fine give our 2D object policy). You have also added credit line=User Ribberlin. Credit line refers to the artwork credit line, not the photo's. Please have a look at the documentation of template:artwork--Zolo (talk) 07:12, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

OK! Greetz! Bukk (talk) 07:26, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
Another thing: the "location" parameter is now used for the location within the museum - no more for the city where the museum lies (which is already provided in the "institution" template).--Zolo (talk) 06:32, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
I have seen that you have added a lot of template:artwork. That's good: many are needed, but two more points:
 • If you dont know the history of an artwork but dont have any information about whether this information is really unknown, "object history" should not be unknown. It can mislead a reader into believing that the artwork has a mysterious origin or that its history has been lost to everyone.
 • If you add creator=XX, you could also create the creator:XX page, otherwise it shows: "creator:XX" in the file description, and I think it looks weird to non contributors. If the creator page does not exist and you dont want to create it, just put XX without a creator template. --Zolo (talk) 11:29, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, Zolo. Your info was helpful for me. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 11:37, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Lost information in Template:Artworks[edit]

Hallo Bukk! I noticed that you edited a few of the pictures that I have uploaded here. Thank you for that! However, I would like to ask you to be sure that you also include the multiple-language descriptions that were included in the template before your edits. A couple of examples: File:Frederic Edwin Church, El Rio de Luz, 1877.jpg and File:Childe Hassam, Poppies, Isles of Shoals, 1891.jpg. Cheers, Jopparn (talk) 10:01, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Jopparn! I'm afraid, my Swedish isn't that good. As far as I've collected the Swedish text said, that it is a painting (which is mentioned in the "medium" field of the artwork template) and that the painting was from a certain year (which is mentioned in the "date" field). So no information is lost. Other users of other languages are served, too. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 10:27, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes, that is of course also true and perhaps I was a bit unclear. What I mean is that from my perspective it is a good thing if the information is also presented as a caption so a potential user just need to copy that when using it in an article or some other medium. Has this been discussed here somewhere on Commons? I have not been that active here earlier but I do have a few thousand pictures that I was planing to upload during the coming years so it would be good to know if that would be a waste of time. Jopparn (talk) 12:32, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
I can see your point of view. My objective is it to make pic info available clearly and structured. If possible I apply templates for internationalisation. I don't think your working time was wasted. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 13:01, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
Adding a description field that contains the same information as other fields like "medium" or "date" is not the standard practice on Commons and I don't think it is such a good idea:
 • Redundancies make maintenance harder
 • The ideal is to have completely multilingual descriptions on Commons. Fields like date, institution or medium use internationalization templates. If we want to get a similarly internationalized text without using them in description, we would have to manually add about a dozen languages in each file, which is really a lot of work.
 • Even for the reader it looks a bit strange to see the same text twice (and even more for users who don't speak English so well and have to read the English text nonetheless before they realize they have the same text in their native language on the following lines)
I agree this can sometimes convenient to copy paste description from Commons but I think that on the whole the benefit is too small to be worth it. Actually we could also use internationalization templates inside the description field, but it still leads to heavy redundancies. Another solution could be to automatically directly generate a caption through artwork. It is very easy to do, though it may run into practical difficulties.--Zolo (talk) 06:06, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Another thing: please don't hide webliknks in the "source" fields by adding "[" and "]" brackets around them. It is not good practice to give the user a useless number instead of a text understandable by humans. If the link seems too long, you may shorten it, but at least retain the domain name or the website's title in the description. Thanks. --AndreasPraefcke (talk) 15:17, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

I'll do that. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 08:14, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

Artwork template conversion[edit]

Hallo Bukk, minor mistake fixed here. Just telling you to make you aware. Thanks for converting! :-) A tip: I suggest you the WikEd diff module for a better diff view. Then you can spot such errors more easily. Copy the block (search for diff) from my User:Saibo/monobook.js if you like. Probably would be good as gadget..hmm :-D Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:31, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Hallo, Saibo! Thank you for the hint. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 16:11, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

ProvenanceEvent[edit]

Hello Bukk, I noticed that in this template you removed "durch" in "erworben durch (etc.)". I've been struggling with this earlier and I thought I finally had it down by saying "erworben durch Otto Normalverbraucher" and "erworben durch (das) Museum". But maybe I was wrong. Perhaps you could shed some light on this? Regards, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 11:40, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Vincent Steenberg! I had inserted that expression "durch" earlier. But when the newowner is left blank you receive e.g. "erworben 1955 durch" and doesn't make any sense. "durch" should only turn up when the newowner field is filled. Unfortunately I'm not that good at programming templates. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 11:45, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
ok, I see what you mean. I will try and fix it. Regards, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 11:58, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
That's great! I'll check it and try to learn something. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 11:59, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

inscription[edit]

Hi I have seen that you were adding inscription with |type=signature and date. Could you changed to |type=signature / date ? It is easier to internationalize. Thanks for your work.--Zolo (talk) 11:16, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Zolo. I'll try to. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 11:18, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
Hi, Zolo. There is a typo: "Datum" (German for date) is spelled with capital "D" at the beginning of the word. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 16:24, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
Oops I had added Austrian German and formal German, but not plain German to the list of languages with capitalized nouns. Should work now. --Zolo (talk) 18:00, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
Thx a lot! Bukk (talk) 06:47, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Title[edit]

Another small formatting thing. Could you use title instead of italics for title using an internationalization template (see here for instance]]). Some languages do not use italics for title and title tries to take that into account. --Zolo (talk) 09:01, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Zolo. I'll try to remember that. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 14:32, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Bukk! Please tell me what can I do for the File:Diotallevi di Angeluccio -Esanatoglia.jpg. Thank you. --Antonella (talk) 23:23, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
