British Empire map[edit]

Hi; found your map from the new British Empire WikiProject page, and have a few comments:

  • I see you've included the Columbia District, or rather because of the line of the 49th Parallel, those parts lost to Britain as distinct from what became British Columbia; if it's shown then other variances in the US-Canada border at one time claimed, or thought to be held, by Britain, could/should be shown, though most are subtle - the particular curve of the pre-1818 boundary from the Red River up towards Saskatchewan and Alberta (where, granted, some of what's north of 49 was technically part of the Louisiana Purchase/Territory), the chunk of what's now northern Maine sqaubbled over in the Aroostook War, and the British Columbian claim to the Alaska Panhandle (based on an HBC lease with the Russians and a technical interpretation of the Treaty of 1825) in which the mainland parts of the Panhandle and most of its islands, excepting Prince of Wales were to be British; maps on Alaska boundary dispute will give you an idea.
  • Why is the Quebec-Labrador boundary shown according to Quebec's own "imperial" designs on the Ungava Peninsula (still maintained by Quebec nationalists/expansionists) if other current boundaries (i.e. the US-Canada one) are shown? I suppose your intent was to show the boundaries of the Colony of Newfoundland as they were, supposedly, at the time of union with Confederation, but if that's the case then shouldn't the other post-Confederation additions to Canada be shown with boundaries also? Gets complicated, I know; easier to deal with by not showing the Labrador-Quebec boundary at all (or there'd be boundaries within BC and teh Prairies that should be shown, also the pre-Statutes of Westminster boundaries of ON, QC and the Northwest Territories). The Labrador boundary, pre-Confederation, was never a "boundary" - it was an assertion by Canada on territories not adequately defined in Canada's or Newfoundland's charters....I wonder if there's a Labrador boundary dispute article, there probably should be.
  • You've managed to squeeze tiny countries on including a few islands; I guess Malta and Gibraltar and Bermuda might only show up as a few pixels worth of red, and Jamaica and whatever can be shown of the other Caribbean colonies should be visible - Trinidad's large enough to show, no? And any way that maritime parts of the Emipre can be shown as "zones" - I'm thinking of the British South Pacific holdings and South Georgia, St. Helena etc - again probably too small to show as anything but a few pixels.
  • Can't remember for how many years it was - 10 or 20? - but the Dutch East Indies were for a while part of the Empire, until returned as part of the Congress of Vienna deliberations/treaties (not sure which one); point is if other surrendered lands are shown (like the Columbia District/Oregon Country) then so should be things like the Dutch East Indies.....
  • Not sure what the status of the British bases in South America should be - Callao, Peru was HQ of teh Pacific Station until it was moved to Esquimalt.
  • "Client states" weren't really part of the Empire I guess, but maybe they could be specially shaded; the one that comes to mind is Uruguay, I'd have to give some thought (and get more coffee) to think of others; Hawaii also comes to mind as a nominal protectorate (which wasn't protected in the end...)...oh, Belgium was certainly an important client state, even a "pet state". Note I don't mean allies, I mean proxy states...
  • English possessions in France - when did Britain surrender Calais et al? I realize the old holdings of Aquitaine, the Loire and Flanders aren't part of the usual meaning of the Emipre, as being part of an older era; but some of it was still in British hands wasn't it by the 18th Century, when the Empire as we know it was being defined as such?

Sorry to kibbitz, jut offering my thoughts.....Skookum1 (talk) 14:01, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello Camaeron!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 16:37, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
