Hello, Carrite!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Warning sign
This media was probably deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Cannon-James-Nov1922.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or send an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). This also applies if you are the author yourself.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, and Commons:Permission if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own.

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the OTRS-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Cannon-James-Nov1922.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Thank you, Florian Stöger for restoring this previously deleted nearly 3 year old template relating to a deleted Commons file. I very much appreciate your maintaining my talk page for me! Carrite (talk) 17:36, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

"Own work" claims for scans, etc[edit]

Please do not claim that old Soviet stamps, etc are your "own work". Such images, if they indeed fall into the public domain, should be marked as PD-old, or some similar PD Soviet tag, and attributed to the correct author, where possible, otherwise marked unknown. That you scanned them in may be noted, but it does not make you the author. -mattbuck (Talk) 18:34, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Thank you, Florian Stöger for having restored this nearly 3 year old message from Mr. Buck, in which he wrongly advises me to apply inappropriate copyright tags to photographs and scans that were my own work. I very much appreciate not only his helpfulness but yours in helping me to maintain my own talk page. I have no idea how I would have thought to have removed this notice, which really should be preserved for the permanent record. Oh, wait, it was already preserved in the permanent record in the history... Thank you very much anyway! Carrite (talk) 17:39, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

Thank you, Florian Stöger for having restored this copyright warning template of a deleted file. The source of the file was a copyright-clear postcard from 1922, for the record. The fact that I'm not going to contest Commons deletions does not equate my acknowledgement of the correctness of the tag. But, it is very, very good to have this template preserved. (Is there any way to tell whether it was applied through use of automated tools, or did the tagger spend more than five seconds on the tag?) Carrite (talk) 17:42, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

File:22-Vorovsky-Genoa.jpg[edit]

Commons-emblem-issue.svg File:22-Vorovsky-Genoa.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.
Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I won't be adding any category tags to Commons files in this lifetime. Perhaps I will die and be reincarnated and have a different view of the utility of such activities in the future, however, so it is very, very good that this template was restored to my Commons talk page! Thank you!!! Carrite (talk) 17:44, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

Shit has already been deleted (wrongly) so the page warnings I have removed here are moot. Thanks for templating me, I appreciate it. Good to see that the good old Commons spirit of vindictiveness and lawlessness is alive and well. Carrite (talk) 05:12, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

I have no intention of requesting undeletion of anything here ever. Template:Keep local Carrite (talk) 17:47, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
Just FYI: The main purpose of these templates is to help Commons users identify you as a newbie or troll.    FDMS  4    18:38, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
By "users" you of course mean the administrative clique. One would think that my User Page would provide sufficient clue. Anyway, good to see you maintaining my User Talk page for me, it's really haaaaaaaaard to understand how wikitext works... Carrite (talk) 20:04, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

One and only warning[edit]

NO!. If there is a repeat of such trolling, and what is essentially a personal attack, from you on Commons in the future, you will be indefinitely blocked. russavia (talk) 13:06, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

Dang, I knew I should have used a proxy showing a false IP addie ostensibly traceable to North Korea... I humbly apologize for having violated the decorum of this site. Carrite (talk) 17:30, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

Tim, please do not go the way of the Buddhist monk setting himself on fire, at least without media coverage. :D
Your comment about the "essence of Commons" was not only essentialist ;) but really uninformative. Commons is a place you can post good stuff for others to use, if you want. Please try to maintain for yourself the option of posting from this account. Maybe you can post pdfs of guitar chords from a songbook ridiculing William Taft or something similarly amusing....
Russavia, Tim could contribute tons of great media, if he wanted. It might be worthwhile trying to pacify him so be returns to the friendly opposition and reconsiders donations, which can only help Commons.
I am certain that Tim will take on board your comment....

Hi KW, what would Commons do with THIS? He's wearing pants! ;-) —tim /// Carrite (talk) 20:17, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
I don't understand your comment. Perhaps I should have read the page history?
Commons accepts a lot, and of course there will be junk and garbage in Commons. But some of it is useful. Try to keep perspective.  Kiefer.Wolfowitz  (Discussion) 17:48, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
