First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Merci ![edit]

SEEKING PERMISSION TO USE ONE OF YOUR IMAGES[edit]

Dear Cgolds,

We are visual artists and academics who are currently working on a chapter in a book entitled ‘The Photograph and the Album’ (published by MuseumsEtc http://museumsetc.com/blogs/news/7422776-forthcoming-the-photograph-and-the-album). We are also contributing to the editorship of this volume.

Our chapter is examining the role that the internet plays in acting as a 'giant photograph album'. We have taken this principle and have begun to look for images, searching – as many of us do – under our own names, curious to find out what images appear.

The following image came up in relation to one of our surnames:

West Fork of the Carson River, just east of Hope Valley in Alpine County, CA http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carsonriversouth.jpg

We are interested in using this image in our chapter and want to confirm that you agree that we can do this in line with the statement that appears in Wikimedia Commons which is as follows:

“This work has been released into the public domain by its author, Skooiman at the wikipedia project. This applies worldwide. In case this is not legally possible: Skooiman grants anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.”

To be clear about our use of the image, it will appear as part of a sequence of images for which we will provide full captions and acknowledgement (in reference to the information which appears on the webpage provided above).

We hope you are willing to give permission and would appreciate if you would confirm this via this email –(MAIL Suppressed). We would also be very grateful if you could inform us of any other parties from whom we should seek permission in reference to this image, if you are aware of any such parties.

If you are willing to give permission please confirm the text you would like us to present in relation to the images to satisfy the condition of attribution.

We would appreciate it if you could respond by Friday June 7th 2013.

Thank you for your consideration & please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Very best regards, Rosie Miller & Jonathan Carson

Sorry, but I do not understand your message : as you pointed out, I have no authorship in this image, the author being Skooiman. Images on Commons are by definition free of use, you acknowledge the origin by stating, for instance : "By Skooiman at en.wikipedia [Public domain], de Wikimedia Commons". You can adapt this depending on the medium (see the options proposed on the page of the photo). Good luck with your project (do not include mail, though, you may receive spams) !
