Crater images[edit]

Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:RJHall#Crater_images . Thanks. — RJHall 17:41, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

There's one template for individual pages and another for categories. I'd guess that the later would be used when there are multiple images and a category can be set up under Moon somewhere. (Maybe under a lunar craters category?). Thanks. — RJHall 17:53, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
I went ahead and created a "Craters on the Moon" sub-category to match the one on wikipedia. There are well over 1600 craters, so there could be a lot of images... Thanks. — RJHall 18:40, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
Hiya. I made a modified crater data template that I think includes the images in a somewhat aesthetically pleasing manner. C.f. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Bond_(crater) So I hope that is too your liking. Thanks. — RJHall 20:17, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

Image:HuntleyView.ClearwaterLake.jpg[edit]

Hello China Crisis. As you seem to be the creator of Image:HuntleyView.ClearwaterLake.jpg do you know the name of the mountain in the background? I'm trying to find out of it's a volcano or a normal mountain because there are volcanoes in the Wells Gray area (Whitehorse Bluffs, Kostal Cone, Pyramid Mountain etc). Dragon Cone is the source of a 15 km (9 mi) long lava flow that dams the southern end of Clearwater Lake. See Wells Gray-Clearwater Volcanic Field. Do you have anything about these volcanic formations?

As you may have seen the picture is geotagged, so you can view the exact location in Google Earth (which, by the way, shows Wells Gray's mountains in 3D). This is not the Southern side of the lake; the picture was made in Northern direction. That makes the mountain in the picture Mount Huntley. And that explains the name of the camp site: Huntley View.

You are among the winners[edit]

Dear China Crisis, you are among the ten finalists in the Norwegian competition Wiki Loves Monuments 2012, and your contribution is among the 10 photos that might become one of the five uploads to be awarded with prizes in the Norwegian contest. There were particularly many good photos this year, and voting was demanding with several draws between very good photos. The internal ranking among the ten photos will be announced within soon, through a press statement and information through the Wikipedia, etc. There will be a particular prize ceremony in Norway, later this winter. We hope that you will contact us so that we can communicate directly with you both which prize your photo is awarded, and how we will honour the winners.

Please contact me per e-mail at my mail address here.

Congratulations with a very good photo!

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Gotiahalvøya?[edit]

Hi ChinaChrisis! Are you quite sure that this is an image of Gotiahalvøya? Is it not rather a photo taken in the opposite direction, from Gotiahalvøya on Nordaustlandet (in your back) and towards the Valhallbreen glacier on Ny-Friesland (northeastern Spitsbergen) ? Compare with details on map, I do not find the mountains in the background if the coast is Gotiahalvøya... Kind regards, Bjoertvedt (talk) 23:13, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Hm, that would make the glacier in the photo (near) Isrundingen or Kapp Fanshawe? I suppose you saw that the photo has a camera location with it (which is accurate). So it's definitely Hinlopenstretet. I agree that the mountains are hard to explain if the photo were Gotiahalvøya. I can't remember how sure I was when I wrote the caption.
