In italian language "region" is a general word indicating a part of a territory (and by extension a part of somthing else i.e. occipital region of cranium). Even if in italian the most common sense is about "administrative region", other meanings as historical r.(i.e. Monferrato), phyisiographic r. (i.e. Cilento), statistical r. (i.e. North-Eastern Italy), are well understood, even without a specification. "Geographical region" by other side is a pleonastic word, that seem quite strange in my language because everybody knows that all the regions are matter of geography.

I made a quick search about "geographical region" in other languages and surprisingly i found a lot of matter. It's a well used term in English, but i also found some articles in Spanish, French and Catalan. None of them in Romanian (Maybe because i miss the using of diacritics é__è). It seems that this words was introduced in geography by french geographer Paul Vidal de la Blache trying to consider in the definition of a territory the role of human (cultural and historical) actions. The german school as indicated by Alexander von Humboldt, insteed considers only the role of landscape, so "region" would be the same for "natural or physiographic region". Probably this meaning difference have passed in our different languages.

The question moved by Pannonian in categorizing such files it's probably involving not only the Serbia's regions but other countries similar entities too; at least in the future. As said Wikipedia lacks at moment for similar categories, so we can try to find an agreement useful for the future too.

  • I disagree with the purpose "Maps of geography" beacause of the redundancy of the term in many languages.
  • "Maps of geographical regions" could be a good choiche only if it's created a disambig page, making
  • "Maps of regions", could be a compromise: the word region it's used by both schools, so could be a quite neutral term.

In creating the new category we could mind that.

  1. The new category could be a subset of Maps by area, rather than Maps by theme, or Maps by type, more useful for a kind of representation than for a kind of territory.
  2. The new category could be organized in subcategories by country
