Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Hello, Crowally!

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hi Eusebius...

I noticed you blocked me, I would like to know why. As you can tell (perhaps), I´m kinda new in this kind of stuff and well, I´ve edited some articles that I felt were incomplete and made some others...

I´ve told you and another user (whose name I can´t recall right now) have deleted some of the pictures I´ve tried to upload in some of my articles, most of them dealing with music bands from my country, Costa Rica...

So, I would like you to explain tome what was the mistake and how I can correct it. I´ve been getting all those pictures from original sources (like the ones from the Sincronico´s article; I took those from their official site, with permission of the singer himself).

I´m only trying to do some justice to the articles that refer to my country´s music, that´s all...

Hi, thanks for showing up. If there's something you don't understand, you can always ask, but silently going on with uploads that were previously spotted as "not ok" for some reason warranted you the block. Let's try to answer your questions (I'll assume you speak Spanish and I'll try to point you to the relevant documents):

You're only blocked here on Commons, not on any Wikipedia. This block is local.
You've been blocked because you have uploaded files taken from unfree sources. In order to upload a picture on Commons (and use it on a Wikipedia, for instance), you must either be the author (or copyright holder) of the picture (for instance, if you have taken a photograph then you can upload it as "own work") or show us an authorization from the copyright holder to release it under a free license (giving the right to anybody to use the work for any purpose, including commercial use and modifications). In brief, you cannot take a picture from a website and upload it here, it is a "copyright violation" (copyvio).
If you have a specific authorization for a picture, you should follow the procedure described here, that is having an authorization e-mail (example in English or in Spanish) sent to permission-commons@wikimedia.org, and putting the template {{OTRS pending}} to the corresponding picture.
When writing a message in a talk page, please don't forget to sign it with --~~~~
I would strongly recommend that you read the documentation pages linked from Commons:First steps (or Commons:Primeros pasos in Spanish, a bit less complete) in order to get acquainted with the rules. In particular, Commons:Image casebook can help you decide whether uploading a given image is OK or not. If in doubt, ask! Admins are here to help (as well as other users), not only to spot copyvios and to block users, that's not the funny part of our job.
I will unblock you if you tell me that you have understood the issue and will pay attention to copyright.
If you want, you can point me an image that you think is ok (or could be ok, or that you don't understand why it's not ok), one that you have uploaded already or one that you want to upload: I will tell you whether it is OK or not, and explain why in detail.

Again, if you need help or if something is not clear, don't hesitate to contact me, the community (hay un café hispanohablante donde puedes encontrar ayuda) or the other admins for serious/urgent issues.

I see... I´m going to spend some time reading the rules and procedures that you are mentioning before finishing the Sincronico´s article...

And yes you are right, I talk spanish... I´m still learning english so, sorry if I´m not clear when communicating an idea.

I rather show you the pictures that I´m gonna try to upload before uploading them, I think in that way I´ll learn better and faster how to recognize a legal upload...

For example: for Sincronico´s article I´m pretending to upload 2 pictures from their website (www.sincronico.net). I talked to the singer personally, Eduardo Carmona, and he said it was fine. So please, tell me how to do it correctly.

Hi there. Don't worry, your English is very good and I infered your native language only by your uploads. Pero si quieres contestar en Español, lo puedo entender. Just a note: please drop the "nowiki" tags when signing, they prevent the software from transforming them into your actual signature. I have used them for demonstration purposes only. About the pictures you want to upload: they're licensed as "all right reserved" (Reservados todos los derechos.) on the original website, so yes, we need a specific authorization. You should tell your contact to send an authorization e-mail (example here in English and here in Spanish), in the language they wish, from info@sincronico.net to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. For the people dealing with such e-mails, it is nice if the picture is already on Commons, so if you're certain about the authorization you're about to get, you can just upload them and put {{OTRS pending}} in the "permission" field. It will prevent the pictures from being removed (at least during a certain time). About the article: I just can't find it. Is it on the Spanish Wikipedia? Are you sure you have created it?
