[edit] Image:ThereIsNoCabal.svg

Your image has "CABAL" in front of the red diagonal line, while Image:Anti-Cabal.PNG has "CABAL" behind the red diagonal line. AnonMoos 06:05, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Does it make a difference, other than readability? --Damian Yerrick () 14:20, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
Whether it does or not, it's enough to prevent your vector image from being a simple replacement for the PNG... AnonMoos 15:20, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Commons:File_types

Ad: Commons:File_types

Are you sure about that? I belive GFDL and such doesn't restrict changing of format in anyway. If that would be tru I would not even be able to change html to txt... Or did I missed the point there? --Nux (talk) 11:03, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

The point is that copyleft licenses require redistributing the work in a format suitable for editing. The GNU GPL calls a copy or phonorecord in such a format "source code"; the GNU FDL calls it a "transparent copy":
A "Transparent" copy of the Document means a machine-readable copy, represented in a format whose specification is available to the general public, that is suitable for revising the document straightforwardly with generic text editors or (for images composed of pixels) generic paint programs or (for drawings) some widely available drawing editor, and that is suitable for input to text formatters or for automatic translation to a variety of formats suitable for input to text formatters. [...] An image format is not Transparent if used for any substantial amount of text. A copy that is not "Transparent" is called "Opaque".
I'd imagine that for musical works that can be straightforwardly represented in a digital music format (.ly, .mid, .mod, .s3m, .xm, .it), music is to recording as text is to image. For instance, converting a recording from a tracked format to a single PCM signal obscures the underlying musical work embodied in the recording, making it not "suitable for revising the document straightforwardly with generic" music editing software and thus "Opaque". Of course you can convert to PCM, convert further to Vorbis, and upload the opaque result, but you also have to make the transparent version available:
If you publish or distribute Opaque copies of the Document numbering more than 100, you must either include a machine-readable Transparent copy along with each Opaque copy, or state in or with each Opaque copy a computer-network location from which the general network-using public has access to download using public-standard network protocols a complete Transparent copy of the Document, free of added material. If you use the latter option, you must take reasonably prudent steps, when you begin distribution of Opaque copies in quantity, to ensure that this Transparent copy will remain thus accessible at the stated location until at least one year after the last time you distribute an Opaque copy (directly or through your agents or retailers) of that edition to the public.
--Damian Yerrick () 19:33, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Hm... Interesting I never thought of that... But let's say I have a PNG picture on GFDL. So if I will produce an SVG image will it be "Opaque"? I belive it wouldn't because it would be hard to tell which image gives more detail. I belive the same would apply to musical works. What do you think? --Nux (talk) 01:12, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

It depends on the intent of the author. As I understand it, a PNG image taken from a camera lens should remain PNG. A PNG image rasterized from vectors should be SVG, as vectors are the most readily editable form. A PNG image that has been composited should be XCF or some other layered format. An image that uses vectors plus images from a camera lens should in theory be SVG that references PNG layers. In the case of the .s3m file that started this whole discussion, the intent of the author is to represent the cartesian product of the notes in a melody times the two instruments. So the melody should be editable, and the instruments should be editable. --Damian Yerrick () 03:07, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

By mistake I reverted your addition of the delete template to several images. It was a mistake from me, and I have reverted myself back so there should be no problem.... just explaining to you in case you wonder what I was doing... / Fred J 02:24, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi Damian Yerrick. I think that this is an error: diff because I haven't made any edit of the image and it's the first notice I have. Greetings ;) Rastrojo (✉) 17:48, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

That must have been an error in the mass deletion request. I did it by hand; should I have used some bot to make the notifications? --Damian Yerrick () 03:07, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Many thanks!

Man, thank you so much for all of your contributions to Wikipedia. If it weren't for your countless hours spent in the basement adding rulers with Photoshop, I don't think I would have ever known that a US quarter is just over 2 centimeters long! You've shielded my fragile eyes from having to look at copyrighted widgets as well, no doubt protecting me from their harmful death-rays. You are truly a gentleman and a scholar.

Keep up the good work, chummer! the preceding unsigned comment was added by 161.165.196.84 (talk • contribs)

Hello Damian Yerrick!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Commons images are used by editors on many projects in many languages. Each image is put into categories. This helps other editors find them. Please add categories to each image you upload.

To add an image to a category, add the following code to the end of the page.

[[Category:Category Name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbit of comets, add the following to the image description page:

[[Category:Astronomy diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories: Astronomy diagrams, Comets.

For further information on categories read Commons:Categories.

The CommonSense Tool often helps you find the best category for your image.

Here is a gallery of your images. Please check that each image has a category. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the help desk. Thank you.

[edit] Which AVI Codec is not patent-encumbered?

In this change you say that most AVI codec are patent-encumbered. This sais that there are AVI codecs that are not patent-encumbered. Can you please say which? Thanks --PhilipMay (talk) 14:32, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Which still-subsisting U.S. patents cover Huffyuv video, IMA ADPCM audio, Cinepak video, or GSM Full Rate audio? --Damian Yerrick () 19:37, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
Ok thanks. I have made a change to clarify the difference of allowed codecs (AVI is not allowed) and patent-encumbered codecs. Do you think it's ok? --PhilipMay (talk) 06:32, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
That clarifies things a bit. --Damian Yerrick () 03:13, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
