Question[edit]

Hi!

Do you know what was the purpose of this? Was it used in order to allow users to not load edittools setting "load_edittools == false" in its user scripts?

If so, how is that achieved currently? (I'm asking because I've removed it at pt.wikibooks too)

Best regards, Helder 13:53, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

File:Freezing Rain on Tree Branch.jpg[edit]

Hi,

You have renamed the image "Frozen Rain on Tree Branch.jpg" into File:Freezing Rain on Tree Branch.jpg as a correction of mispelling. I am not asking for a change but I think you werre not correct. I don't want to be too picky but the photo does not show rain falling and freezing but the frozen result : ice. So the original name seemed better to be.

Edittools.js[edit]

It looks like you were the last person to touch this file. None of buttons above or below the big textarea seem to work anymore, at least in Monobook. Can you check this? Thanks. howcheng {chat} 23:09, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Yes, please remember to test your changes in monobook, as every other day something seems to break for me. The bottons no longer match my "Save page" and "Preview" buttons, which use my custom XP theme that I prefer. The new buttons are bloated and take up too much room for me. Rocket000 (talk) 04:44, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

And please fix Template:Ilm since you deleted NavFrame. Rocket000 (talk) 04:54, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
I'm usually testing changes in Monobook and Vector, on IE6, IE7, IE8, FF3 & FF4, Chrome 4, Safari 5 and Opera 10. I reenabled it, but removed the button style per your request.

Hi!

It seems that it is possible to remove one more if (typeof $j != 'undefined' from the function insertTags, since the whole script is loaded by an $j(document).ready....

One more thing: When you have the time, could you try to change the script so that it load the buttons using AJAX from a page like "MediaWiki:Some Other Edittools Page", so that we could make the current "MediaWiki:Edittools" empty and finally have a workaround for the bugzilla:11130? (since the current one is loaded for everyone, no matter if javascript is enabled or not, the change would make it to be loaded only for those who indeed can and want to use it, saving bandwidth for the others). Helder 11:50, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

Yep, that check was obviously unneeded. Regarding the Ajax: Sure, but how about keeping the standard set in Mediwiki:Edittools, so that we have one set immidiately (shouldn't weigh more than 2kb)? Additionally you can also go to your preference screen & uncheck "use old edittools". Then the standard set is moved into the wikiEditor.--DieBuche (talk) 16:08, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
Ok then.

I've noticed that it isn't moving the buttons to the toolbar at pt.wikibooks. Try edit our test page for example. Besides, it is not displaying the names of each group correctly: "Pad.C3.A3o" instead of "Padrão", "Matem.C3.A1tica" instead of "Matemática", and so on. Helder 23:44, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

Accented Names are fixed in the latest version, the problem with wikibooks is that you don't have JSconfig. You'll find a version which doesn't rely on JSConfig here--DieBuche (talk) 17:50, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing the diacritics. Could you add the MediaWiki:Edittools.css using importStylesheetURI so that the CSS is loaded also when imported from other projects?
Besides adding JSconfig, what else do we need to have the possibility of adding options to Special:Preferences as you do here on Commons? Helder 20:29, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
Currently the script for edittools is being imported every time here, but it is only useful when editing/previewing a page, so it should not be loaded for those who are not editing a page. But if we do so, as it is made at pt.wikibooks, then we have that problem with JSconfig not adding the option into the preferences page (because when we access that page we are not editing it). Could we move the part of MediaWiki:Edittools.js which do the registration in JSconfig to MediaWiki:Common.js, and then import the remaining code only when editing? Helder 21:43, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
Could you also move the CSS style="margin-top:10px; border:1px solid #aaaaaa; padding:1px; text-align:center; font-size:110%;" from MediaWiki:Edittools to MediaWiki:Edittools.css? Helder 15:56, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
BTW, the option "use old edittools" is not available anymore. I guess it is because of this edit, since JSconfig.registerKey won't be exectuted if not editing a page (and it seems to be needed when viewing the preferences, at least while we don't move that part of the script out of MediaWiki:Edittools.js). Helder 16:25, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! Two minor issues: (1) When you click on one of the Wikipedia links on Template:Ilm it also expands it (preferably, it should only expand if the arrow/"Wikipedia" text is clicked). (2) Thanks for keeping the edittools button style the same but can you reduce the margin between them? It's about double the whitespace that it use to be. Rocket000 (talk) 00:59, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

(1) Lupo proposed a change to the script which would fix that, but I haven't yet had time to test it. (2) I halved the margin (0.1em still remaining) --DieBuche (talk) 17:50, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
(1) No, it doesn't. I give up. There's too many classes (header, headertext, collapsibleheader), and no clear concept which clicks where should (un)collapse. My stuff worked for creator templates, for the maintenance table at Category:Milestones, and for {{Ilm}}, as used at MediaWiki talk:Lang. However, {{Hidden2}} uses yet another structure, so I'd have had to add yet another special case (besides tr/th, where the event is triggered on the th, but the event handler is on the tr) for that. This this should be properly redesigned, so that events are always on the item that has the arrow, otherwise the code gets too ugly. I've undone all my changes from today for now.
(2) It works and looks just fine with no margin at all (on Firefox, at least). I have
#specialchars button {
  font-size:0.9em;
  margin: 0 0 0 0 !important;
}
in my css since that change.
Lupo 21:49, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
Ok, feel free to remove the margin completely in that case. (1) This approach seems to work: Checking if e.target is a link, and only uncollaps if it's not.--DieBuche (talk) 21:53, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks guys for taking care of both those issues. :) I kinda miss the line breaks to better organize the buttons but I think maybe it's better this way for smaller screens. Rocket000 (talk) 00:09, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

  • Hello! With this enhancement the script will be able to add the remaining edittols' sections to the Edittols booklet page. Could you update MediaWiki:Edittools.js? (probably it is possible to use only one loop $sb.each but currently I don't know how). Helder 17:13, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
I kind of avoided that since (nearly) all characters are present in the special characters section. Or are there some groups missing? --DieBuche (talk) 17:35, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Yes, there are, and some groups are not complete. For example, last time I checked it was missing:
  • Latin: ÐǾǿ
  • IPA section: ɚɝ
  • Symbols: ‽∴⁂¹²³©®™
  • Cyrillic: Ѝѐѝ
And so on... (An automated way to check the other sections would be good, because this is tedious =/). Ideally we should remove from MediaWiki:Edittols all those which are duplicated, and then request at bugzilla an update of the toolbar. Helder 18:01, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Question: when is MediaWiki:Edittools-legacy.js needed? I mean: when $j.fn.textSelection happens to be undefined? Helder 21:41, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Hey where is this great solution (from Helder in ?) to go? I had seen it live this week. Will there be a standard or a gadget? --Perhelion (talk) 20:40, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Collapsible museum template[edit]

Hi DieBuche. Is there something that could be done so that museum templates in the table at Creator:Berthe Morisot/works are collapsed? Preferable something that wouldn't require editing the page.  Docu  at 15:24, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

"Move & Replace" tool[edit]

Hi, I noticed something funny happening with your {{Rename}} (and "Move & Replace") tool. When I tried to rename "File:Кино. 1990. Черный альбом.jpg" to "File:Кино, Черный альбом (Kino, Chyorny album) (1990).jpg", the tool instead created the filename "File:Кино, Черный альбом (Kino, Chyorny album) (1990).jpg. 1990. черный альбом.jpg" even though this was not what I typed. — Cheers, JackLee talk 12:06, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Wikibits[edit]

Hi DieBuche, Just so you know, there's no reason to remove all references to Wikibits just yet. When ResourceLoader is introduced it will stay exactly where it is for a while. Then it will go into isolation (eg. the old addPortletLink would stay available as mw.legacy.addPortletLink - this way script authors that dont know how to use the new methods yet can simply replace the functions untill they've fixed it completely) and later at some point it will be removed completely. Anyway, so far you've been replacing then with the new versions of things so no problem, but just thought I'd let you know :). Also keep an eye on mw:ResourceLoader/JavaScript Deprecations if you wanna know what the modern versions will be of some of the functions (which will work as soon as ResourceLoader is deployed, such as mw.util.isBrowser() and $.fn.checkboxShiftClick() ) and that page also contains some tips for things that won't be ported, meaning things that are for example better done in jQuery (which dont need to be re-created in ResourceLoader's mediawiki js utilities). Such as $.inArray and $.ajax. –Krinkletalk 22:48, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

mw.util.addPortletLink in MediaWiki:Common.js[edit]

Hi DieBuche, Nice to already see my mediaWiki.utils being used but the tooltip-access keys part calling this.updateTooltipAccessKeys doens't work here as the scope is different. the "this" references to "mw.util".(mw.util.updateTooltipAccessKeys) - which depends on more stuff etc. so that wont work. Replacing the call with the old wikibits version ("updateTooltipAccessKeys") doens't work either becuase it's sending a jQuery object wich the old updateTooltipAccessKeys doesn't know how to use. It's best to either rewrite it entirely temporarily or just stick to Lupo's version wich is already an improvent. And except for small details (length of the script, new jQuery-selector option as nextnode, inserint before searchform in nostalgia) it's basiscally the same idea. I'd recommend waiting for deployment of ResourceLoader and at that point replacing it with a redirect to mw.util.addPortletLink(); –Krinkletalk 01:37, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
