Gimp[edit]

How do I fix geometric distortion caused by the wide-angle lens in Gimp? --Digon3 15:03, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • There is a menu entry under Filters -> Distorts -> Lens Distorts... (I'm using Gimp 2.3). Try the 'main' setting first. It is a bit of trial and error, but once you figure out the settings they should be applicable to all pictures taken with that lens. --Dschwen 16:38, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

hello Digon and thank you first of all, I am blown away as usual. I uploaded the missing overlap Image:Schloss Cecilienhof 017a.jpg and re-requested the stitch. I didn't upload the missing one because for some reason the brightness is quite different from one shot to the next, I figured maybe just with four images it would've been enough but obviously that was not good. If the brightness could be consistent to the main part of the building (which came out best I think), that would be great. Question about the Image:Wien Flughafen Schechat outside Panorama.jpg, did the last image Image:Wien Flughafen Schechat May 2007 016.jpg get combined as well? and thank you again for the other panoramas. Thanks deletion[edit]

This Image:Barra Ondina Beach of Salvador.jpg is for deletion, realy. (sorry, I don't talk in English). I had made new version, in .png. Thanks. André Koehne TALK TO ME 19:12, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ! I reverted your change because this is clearly a badname case : as original uploader states in the deletion request, he misspelled the extension when he updated (re-uploaded) the image. Compare Gordes_2_By_JM_Rosier.JPG with original version of Gordes 2 By JM Rosier.jpg, not the current version. The deletion request has lasted too long, please speedy delete this image. Thanks. — Xavier, 21:58, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, would you please explain how you came to the conclusion (demonstrated by this edit) that Image:Robert Campin - L' Annonciation - 1425.jpg is not a duplicate of Image:Robert Campin 010.jpg? It is clear to me that they are photos of the same work of art, and that Image:Robert Campin 010.jpg is better because is 1600×812 pixels vs. the 1045×534 pixels of Image:Robert Campin - L' Annonciation - 1425.jpg, although it is not as colorful. Here they are side by side, for comparison:

Thanks!   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 05:13, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I untagged it as a {{Badname}} because it was not an exact duplicate and uploaded by two different people. I think that for something like this it should be a deletion request as the file is redundant through a better but not identical one. 12:57, 22 July 2007 (UTC) The preceding incompletely signed comment was added by Digon3 (talk • contribs)[1]
Thank you. I have converted my request to a deletion request. Hi,

I don't see what is the point about that change: there are several typography mistakes and presentation issues which are corrected in the new version map, with a more accurate name. So is there any good reason to keep a draft orphan file? Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 21:00, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

2 questions[edit]

Hello, Jon, I'd like to ask you 2 questions please. My first question is how to dispute the image relevance at the page. My second question is, if you as administrator could edit the summary of thatimage. Please respond right here, not on my talk page. I'll check on your respose later. Thank you for your time. --Mbz1 16:05, 28 July 2007 (UTC)Mbz1[reply]

  • I'm not sure what you mean by disputing the image relevance. Also, anyone can edit this image. It is a mirror copy of the commons description page, whatever changes you make to the commons description will also appear on the wikipedia page. --Digon3 talk 17:11, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thank you for the response, but I'm still not sure how to edit that image. There's no word "edit" on any of them. I also wonder, if I could somehow protect my talk page from a harassing user. Thanks.--Mbz1 18:22, 28 July 2007 (UTC)Mbz1[reply]
      • Strange, the edit button should be right next time the file and discussion tabs on the top. I will edit it for you if you want. Also, who is the harassing user? --Digon3 talk 18:34, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
          • Yes, if you could please change name "Mila Zinkova" to Mbz1 or better yet to Keta. I do not consider that picture to be mine any more and I do not want to have anything to do with it. About harassment, could you please tell me, if there are any rulls that prevent me from deleting the contest of my talk page. If there are, could you, please point me to where it is written. Thanks again for your time.--Mbz1 19:41, 28 July 2007 (UTC)Mbz1[reply]
  • ✓ Done Changed it to Mbz1. About deleting your talk page, I don't know of any rules, but I think it is alway a good idea to wait a week or so before deleting a discussion. --Digon3 talk 21:56, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Click on the blue triangle on the right"[edit]

Hi, the subject quote appears multiple times on your excellent user page, but I can't find any blue triangles to click on. What do the blue triangles do for you, and how might I get them to show up? Thanks!   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 00:05, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • The blue triangles are suppose to hide the section and when you click on it, it make the section appear. See my wikipedia user page (the show buttons) for what it is suppose to do. However, something about the way the Commons handles Javascript differently than wikipedia does not make it work. I have only seen it work on one user account on my computer, and nowhere else. --Digon3 talk 01:06, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vignetting in panoramas[edit]

After a panorama stitch one could to a handwaving vignetting correction in drawing some freehand masks. But that is only as good as your mask-drawing capabilities.

The proper way is to correct the original photos. Either do this before you stitch, some general photomanipulation software can do some correction, there are also small specialist programs. The software hugin I use can do it on the go, the most recent betas even determine the correction parameters from the image overlaps themselves. This is what I recommend for panoramas. -- Klaus with K 20:50, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Flags[edit]

Hello,

Would you be so kind to explain why you tagged Image:Bandeira da Bahia.svg as a duplicate of a more recent upload, Image:Flag of Bahia.svg, just to change the name from Portuguese to English, after I had reverted that same tagging some weeks ago?

Commons is a multilingual project; the filenames are in a conventional fashion, being named "flag of xxx" in Portuguese. Changing the names of such flags to another language will affect thousands of pages in dozens of projects, making CommonsDelinker flood RC for days in a row. I know this because it has hapenned already, when user João Felipe CS did the same duplicate tagging.

Please think carefully about such actions before tagging such images. Personally, I am not willing to accept a Portuguese name as a "bad filename" in a multilingual project. Regards, PatríciaR msg 23:03, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I am aware that you only did that change and yes I will talk with Alkab in order to clear this up. However, one must use good judgement in doing such tagging. If you would have evaluated the image's history, you would have seen that the image had been tagged before as a duplicate and that tagging had been reverted. This means something strange is going on and in those cases, personally, I prefer to check what's going on before redoing what could have been (and was) a mistake.
I am also a newbie admin in Commons and I am also not comfortable in doing certain actions here yet. But good judgement is not an administrative action. Don't interpret my previous message as a critic, but rather as a call for being observant of the pages histories.
Once again, thanks for the reply, cheers, PatríciaR msg 11:08, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can see from the archives Image:Bryce_Canyon_Amphitheater_Hoodoos_Panorama.jpg was not promoted (nor was it declined), but I see user:Thermos posted the promoted tag here [[2]]. So although the other versions of this image were properly promoted I don't think this one was. What do you think? (have I asked about this before?) --Tony Wills 09:14, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes that CR was all I could find, do you want to submit it to QI again, and we'll see if we can push it through to tidy things up :-) --Tony Wills 12:51, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That green tint...[edit]

...do you know where it is coming from? I just noticed the (now already promoted) Image:Unknown_Quartz_crystal_67.JPG has it too. Would you still care to reshoot it, or should we try a color correction? I suppose it should not affect the QI status if an image gets further improvements :-) --Dschwen 10:30, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that ones persons "improvements" are another's "degradations" so a new version really needs to go to QIC, and it may then be judged as to whether the QI tag should be moved to the new version (although it is possible for both to be QI). --Tony Wills 11:13, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sizes[edit]

I started to change inches to cm, and realised I did it differently than Vsmith on English Wikipedia. When you wrote about 1 ½ inches, is it so exact that it can be made to 3.8 cm, or is 4 cm better? I will fix them according to your answer. :) Best regards Rhanyeia 14:24, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your Attribution Page[edit]

Hi Digon, can I copy your attribution page? Your page seems good for me too and I'm a poor en-2 naive on legal matters. Is it consistent with the crazy debate about "'user-specific templates" ? Thanks --LucaG 17:19, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, Digon, I happy with you using my (now defunct) attribution page, just try to point other askers to it There are some things that I have learned about the license that I want to impart to people before they go using it as a legal release and have their pictures deleted, blah, blah. Oh and I see that Klaus with K told you the problems with fixing the vignetting, anyway, take another look at the FPC, I think the PDX night pano is better then alot of current FPs. Cheers -Fcb981 16:47, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Uh, if I were you I'd take out the clause about "the only way I can prevent commercial use is with strict attribution requirements", this got me in trouble because I was breaching the "spirit" of the commons. Otherwise looks Ok. I'd also be more specific with the word "near". Example:
The photo credit must be in the immediate vicinity of the picture. (Immediate vicinity can be determined as follows: 1. If in a book or magazine, on the same page as the photograph. 2. Taking the length of the longest side of the picture and halving it ((ie. 6mm/2=3mm)) gives the maximum distance the credit can lye from the edge of the picture. 3. the photo credit must fit both criterion 1 and 2.)

Hope this helps, Later --Fcb981 17:29, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vignetting in panoramas[edit]

On my talk page user Fcb981 asked me for help in tackling vignetting in his panorama. Unfortunately he has the ingredients stored elsewhere, I would be happy to help him with a restitch, but do not see much of a point of me trying to correct vignetting in the stitched image. Of course one might juggle around with gradient masks. -- Klaus with K 14:18, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How to ask deletion[edit]

Hi Digon, I would like to ask the deletion for this terrible edit: Image:Piles of Salt Salar de Uyuni Bolivia Luca Galuzzi 2006 a bloom.jpg but I find Deletion_guidelines too much complicate for me. Can you help me? --LucaG 23:04, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Piles of Salt Salar de Uyuni Bolivia Luca Galuzzi 2006 a bloom.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Delistings[edit]

Thank you Jon. I posted a comment on the delisting page and I voted on the absurd delisting request of Daniel's cow image.
I joined the project 9 months ago with enthusiasm because I found here a lot of very good contributors but now I'm a little less enthusiast finding people who like to wreck others' work like almost happened against Fir0002. --LucaG 08:50, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

I've noticed images deletion stay open for a while can you please close this? I replaced the licenses with valid ones thank you, [3]. Also close this? [4] the image was found in US archives before 1923 published cited in a site also the license is fixed there thank you. --ArmeniGen 00:22, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re-stating license requirements[edit]

If someone isn't going to read the CC-By-SA licensing requirements, then they're not going to read your simplification. What's more, you're adding new language, which is almost certain to do one of two things: restrict the usage of the images more than you'd intended or give the licensee and unintended loophole to avoid one or more restrictions in the license. It's usually best to let lawyers worry about licensing terms. If you want to stress it, I'd just make your disclaimer: Attribution is required with this image. Please see the Creative Commons CC-By-SA-2.5 license for details on attribution requirements. -Harmil 03:32, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
