You're right. So what I have to do wiyh graphics? Pictures of Dali are used there, there and there whithout licence. Niki K 01:49, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC) I will upload last picture. Than we see what with this. Niki K

I thought, that categories went to image pages by error. If there is really such a practice - I didn't know about it. But I think, that it is better to create an article about ship instead, or add this to ship article? Pibwl 23:12, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I know that. I haven't just delete the upload because I can't do it. The others images I have uploaded were in GFDL or PD (I have not used the image from Dali in the article in portuguese). One question: when I upload an image from another wikimedia project, is necessary to inform anybody? (in order to they delete the original image?)? Manuel Anastácio 19:43, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Nasa LOGOS[edit]

Hi!

What is going on? You are trying to delete the Nasa Apollo LOGOs I uploaded, that are provided by Nasa as Public Domain. What are you doing? Please revert this.

Best regards,

Campani 13:20, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

The Nasa guidelines say:

Reproduction Guidelines for Use of NASA Images and Emblems

NASA images generally are not copyrighted. You may use NASA imagery, video and audio material for educational or informational purposes, including photo collections, textbooks, public exhibits and Internet Web pages. This general permission does not include the NASA insignia logo (the blue "meatball" insignia), the NASA logotype (the red "worm" logo) and the NASA seal. These images may not be used by persons who are not NASA employees or on products (including Web pages) that are not NASA sponsored.

If the NASA material is to be used for commercial purposes, especially including advertisements, it must not explicitly or implicitly convey NASA's endorsement of commercial goods or services. If a NASA image includes an identifiable person, using the image for commercial purposes may infringe that person's right of privacy or publicity, and permission should be obtained from the person.

Any questions regarding application of any NASA image or emblem should be directed to:

Bert Ulrich Public Services Division NASA Headquarters Code POS Washington, DC 20546

Tel: (202)358-1713 Fax: (202)358-4331 Internet: bert.ulrich@hq.nasa.gov

Please be advised that:

1) NASA does not endorse or sponsor any commercial product, service, or activity.

2) The use of the NASA name, initials, any NASA emblems (including the NASA Insignia, the NASA Logo and the NASA Seal) which would express or imply such endorsement or sponsorship is strictly prohibited.

3) Use of the NASA name or initials as an identifying symbol by organizations other than NASA (such as on foods, packaging, containers, signs, or any promotional material) is prohibited.

4) NASA does permit the use of the NASA Logo and Insignia on novelty and souvenir-type items. However, such items may be sold and manufactured only after a proposal has been submitted to and approved by a representative from the Public Services Division (see above information for address, numbers, etc.) in accordance with 14 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Part 1221. Permission is granted on a nonexclusive basis as it is not NASA's policy to grant exclusive rights to use any of the Agency identities.

5) No approval for use is authorized by NASA when the use can be construed as an endorsement by NASA of a product, service, or activity.

6) NASA emblems should be reproduced only from original reproduction proofs, transparencies, or computer files available from NASA Headquarters. Please be advised that approval must be granted by the Public Services Division (see above information for address, numbers, etc.) before any reproduction materials can be obtained.

As you can see, Nasa do not permit the use of the "blue and red" logo only. Not logos from the Apollo missions. Campani 16:13, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

As you wrote: "NASA does permit the use of the NASA Logo and Insignia...", and all the quoted text refers to "the" Nasa Logo (in other words, the "blue and red logo"), NOT the images and logos of Project Apollo. Campani 19:15, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

fair use?[edit]

hi, do you really think propably fair use images should be in here? [1] --217.255.73.131 07:12, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

No, I don't, and i didn't upload them, i just put them on the page because they where listed as unused. But as these images are from a US government agency, they are (probably) in the public domain. The uploader just didn't bother to label them as such, so someone else labeled them as {unknown}. Oops, i read "Indiana" there... it sais "India"... no idea about the (c) then :( -- Duesentrieb 13:20, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC) -- Duesentrieb 09:27, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Re Template:Please link images[edit]

Brilliant idea! People need to be told; a lot of them probably just don't know what to do with the images once they're here. You're thinking of sending this message to users who don't put their uploaded files anywhere, right? Perhaps there should also be a similar (but shorter) message after somebody has uploaded a file. -- Ranveig 20:23, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Bug?[edit]

Image categories[edit]

Hello and thanks for the tip. I never thought to do that and now I will. --HiFlyer 19:32, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi Duesentrieb!

Excuse if I did not put the categories on images I uploaded. It is because I usually did not work much with Commons, and I do not know very much Commons structure. I work more with PT.Wikipedia. I will try to make things better next time. Thanks!

Best regards,

Carlos Campani

User:Duesentrieb/Upload checklist[edit]

Nice work. I took the liberty of adding a sentence to the end of point 3. Hope you don't mind. I also think we should link and mention the copyright tags for 2: Licensing. On another topic, Special:Allmessages has a list & link to of all system messages. The one for the message below the edit window would be MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning. And yes, only admins can edit it since the page is protected by default. Have fun! -- Chris 73 15:13, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I not only dont mind, I invite you to rewrite the entire thing if you like;) I just don't have the time ATM. And thanks for the Info! -- Duesentrieb 15:48, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Badminton-Bilder[edit]

The upload of images in Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Hello, I uploaded images in wikimedea commons because this use is suggested to me in wikipedia of my country.

The problem is that if I use an images stored in another wikipedia I should copy and duplicate this images.

The suggestion of storage in Wikimedia Commons is very useful to have this image available in all wikipedias but the flow of storage should be more easily to help this procedure (for example about a choice of category) otherwise I store medias in my wikipedia that not requires this "complex" wokflow. --Ilario 20:21, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Categorizing Images[edit]

Thanks for the comment on my user page. I added some of the image sources and I'm currently searching for the ones I haven't added yet. Are galleries absolutely necessary? Isn't categorising the images enough? Unfortunately I still haven't learned how to do galleies. --StarbucksFreak 03:32, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Re: Fashion Images:[edit]

I made them myself from some very old (30 years old) catalogues that I no longer have in a condition that could be called intact. I have no idea about their copy right status... -- Michael Reiter signature added by me -- Duesentrieb 18:18, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Making Articles[edit]

Hi. I´m pretty new here and I'm having some little problems with the uploading... I can upload the images and all, I put the image info., but then I don't know where to categorize them...

For example, I have some pictures of Panama that I wanted to upload, but I cannot find where. I found Panama, then i see the sub-categoy and then the articles... how do i create an article? I though it was like at the wikipedia just by editing the page, but when I do so it only appears the category.

I would like to know about the category, sub-category and article, 'cuz I already uploaded a couple of pictures, but right now they're in oblivion... HELP PLEASE!

Benachrichtigungstext benutzt[edit]

:-) --Baikonur 19:03, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Sternmotor[edit]

Hallo Duesentrieb, also auch hier Admin; gratuliere dir ;-)

Copyright tags[edit]

Hi, don't worry, no need to apologize as I understand why you're doing this.

 • The authorization for the PromPerú images states that anyone can use these images as long as credit is given.
 • What should we do about Image:View of Puno, Peru.JPG if we don't know its copyright status? It seems the owner of the page is also the owner of the picture's copyright and since he hasn't made any indications about copyright, he probably doesn't mind?

Hope this information helped. And congrats on the baby! --StarbucksFreak 22:36, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hidden images[edit]

Hi Duesentrieb, in fact my images are not hidden, they are just 1) pending categorization or 2) insertion into normal pages. I usually do 1) when it's an unique image or 2) when there are more than 3 of them. Anyway, they will eventually be placed in either one. Thank you for the warning! -- Nuno Tavares PT 00:16, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Copyright-Vermerk[edit]

About copyright of screenshots[edit]

Hi again. You are talking about the copyright of a screen shot on my talk pages. I was just wondering in general if this necessarily always holds true, though, but I'm sure this has been discussed before. What if I were to take a photo of my computer screen, could I publish that in GFDL? Or a photo of the front cover of a book? I suppose it would still by copyrighted as long as it contains mostly copyrighted material. What then about a photo of a copyrighted logo or something? As an example I'd like to refer you to de:Apple. BjarteSorensen 01:50, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Links? Where? Help a newbie :-)[edit]

Hi Duesentrieb - I just read your message on my discussion page, where you asked me to link to my contributions through either categories or gallery pages. So far I've placed all my images in both a copytight category and a general category according to the "topic" of the images. Besides, I keep a "record" of what I've uploaded on my user page here on Commons. If that doesn't suffice, please direct me to where else I need to put up links. -- Peo 23:51, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Unspecified own uploads[edit]

As I went through Commons:Untagged images (or rather, let Robbot do it for me), I found that there are many images that do not contain licensing information, but do contain information making clear it's a Wikimedian's own work. Would it be a good idea to make those GFDL 'by default', maybe with a special tag to say that the licensing is provisional or something like that? - Andre Engels 21:13, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi - you uploaded this image and tagged it as GFDL - however, there is no license info in the Czech wikipedia. Also, the GFDL requires the author to be named. So... who took this image and released it under the GFDL? Please make sure to only copy images to the commons if they have complete license info, and please copy all the relevant info with the image. Thanks -- Duesentrieb 21:04, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi... The Czech wiki doesn't contain an English description. The only English words I see are Public Domain and GNU/FDL. But when I took a closer look, it is a template unverified. This is a misunderstanding of me. I'm terriby sorry. I have adapted the template so further mistakes with other users are impossible (except when they don't speak English either) Domie 07:38, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hi again... I'm glad we worked this out, but on the Czech wikipedia they are less colaborative. They erased the English part of the tag... Can we do something about this, because it will happen again. Domie 06:49, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi. The user, who dowloaded the image is Lzur on cs.Wiki. I've asked him to provide the © info from the source, which seems to be http://klaus.cz (and Mr. Klaus is happy to get his picture published as many times as possible, in principle:-). wiki-vr 17:46, 1 May 2005 (UTC) Re: Hi - User:Domie copyied this image from the czech wikipedia to the commons and tagged it as GFDL. The czech wikipedia does however not seem to have any license info about this image (as far as I can tell without speaking the language). As you (or someone called wiki-vr) uploaded it there, could you add the author and appropriate license info? Thanks. -- Duesentrieb 21:07, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

WinDiff screenshot[edit]

Hi - I'm going to delete WinDiff demonstration.png, because it is a screenshot of a non-free program. WinDiff is a Microsoft product which is freeware, but not free software (i.e. not under a free license). Also, the screenshot contains copyrighted components of the windows GUI, which may be shown under fair use, but the commons do not allow fair use images. Sorry about that - you may want to upload the image to the english wikipedia (which allows fair use images), or make a screenshot of a free alternative (like KDiff3 on Linux). -- User:Duesentrieb 18:57, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm sorry. I didn't know that the commons don't allow for fair use images. Also where I come from standard GUI elements can probably not be defendably copyrighted. If that is not the case in the U.S.A. then I'm sorry. I'll upload it to the english wiki and claim fair use.
As for screenshots of alternatives: we have them. The point is to show what WinDiff is, not what a general diff-like program does. And I honestly don't think Microsoft will mind (otherwise I wouldn't have uploaded the image in the first place). Shinobu 19:21, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Wizard[edit]

Hi Duesentrieb...Dorothy & Toto never made it to my story because of the doubts I had about the date of the photo. I have decided to simply link to the photo @ W: where I found it. If I have the time to follow up I will research it for another article and d/l again. Thanks! --HiFlyer 20:32, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

commons:Image:OpenTTD-screenshot.png[edit]

added a GFDL tag to the screenshot, thanks for letting me know. WolfenSilva 01:35, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. I did not notice in surname "ł". It should now be well. Wames 09:12, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

You’re right (in Poland also 70 years from author's death). Image:LeonWyczolkowski.Autoportret.1898.ws.jpg should was delete. Wames 18:13, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. I will remember (it's only 20 months). Wames 08:31, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Assumind PD[edit]

Hi Duesentrieb. About your message:

 • I assumed PD because these images can be easily taken by visiting Lisbon, Portugal. So, even if the images get deleted, they can be easily replaced.
 • I always include the author when porting images here. When the images are obviously violating any copyright (say, professionally edited) I prefer not to uploaded. But you stated interesting points that I'll try to remember next time!
 • When porting images here, I set the interwiki to the source, thus not needing a clear statement/link to the original - just follow the interwiki. Does it make sense? :)
 • You mentioned a scanned image but I couldn't find it on my contributions.. could you please specify?

Best regards, -- Nuno Tavares PT 09:49, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Template:Redundant[edit]

Isn't it possible to improve this Tag by an automatic adding of : to this template by changing {} to :{} so you only need to copy the image or page links without need to add something else ?
-> Using Image:abc.jpg is then automatically converted to display :Image:abc.jpg inside the template text.
(Check template history what I tried) --Denniss 11:55, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Yes, it would, but then you could not put multiple images or additional notes in there. Also, changing it now would break all pages currently using the tag. I don't think this is a good idea. If you feel it is, als about it on the village pump. -- Duesentrieb 11:57, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
BTW: we should continue this discussion on Template talk:Redundant -- Duesentrieb 11:59, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Why it isn't in public domain?[edit]

Do you live in Stockholm? Everyone can get the map in any public traffic stations in Stockholm freely. Is it in public domain?--3dball 17:26, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I've asked the SL staff. They replied that all the metro maps are public and free to use.--3dball 19:04, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I asked by the service telephone 0046-(0)86001000 of SL whether can I use the map in www.wikipeia.org. They didn't reply me directly, but said the metro map is an public service for the citizens and free to use. By the way, the file is missed.--3dball 19:33, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Duesentrieb, thank you for eloquent and detailed reply to this user. Somebody else uploaded a Stockholm underground map earlier this year and I am quite sure it was deleted too. Thuresson 20:15, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

from Wdshu[edit]

Hello, Duesentrieb, thanks for your notification about the status of the images I uploaded to Commons long time ago. Yeah, I rarely visited here recently. Since I got no response from the original author after asking them to change the copyright status of these images, please just delete those images. Many thanks for your hardwork. --Wdshu 04:21, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Pages for photos[edit]

Hi As you've probably found out I'm a new user to the commons (not to the en wikipedia though) and I haven't quite got to grips with it. But I've noticed that nearly all the images on the FPC page haven't got any other usages except for being on the FPC Template page. --fir0002 11:41, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

FPC stands for Featured picture candidates --fir0002 08:53, 4 May 2005 (UTC)

diagrams[edit]

I put my diagrams on the juggling page, hopefully people will be able to find them there. And congrats on the baby girl. MattKingston 19:43, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

USAF-Siegel PD?[edit]

Gruß -- Arcturus 15:49, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

-- Duesentrieb 15:56, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

Tnx but[edit]

Tnx for my fist talk msg on Commons. Which images did I upload under fair use? I will correct it if possible, move if not - I might have done it long ago when Commons was just started and I didn't know about fair use prohibition. As for categories - it is a great idea, can you point me to a list? I will sort all of my uploaded files. --Piotrus 10:07, 9 May 2005 (UTC)

Tnx. I think I uploaded it when I thought covers werel PD. Is there any simple procedure for moving it to en-wiki then? Also, could you take a look at Image:WWII Poland Invasion 1939-09-01.jpg and tell me if I should move it to en wiki or is it PD? It is the main pic for my hopefully-soon-to-be 10th wiki FA so I'd like to have any copyright problems solved before FAC :> --Piotrus 20:36, 10 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

The Firefox logo is in fact public open source, as it says on their web site. I would greatly appreciate it if you would please put the image back online.

Thank you.

hm... I was under the impression that logos of firefox/thunderbird/etc are under a limited license, not allowing commercial use. The section you point to referrs to the program being free, it sais nothing about the logo or commercial use of it. I know for a fact that the sunbird logo is not free for example, see [5], bottom of page. I couldn't find details about the firefox logo, though.
So, if you feel that it is indeed under a free license, please specify that license (Public Domain is not it, maybe Mozilla Public License or GPL?) and point to a location where this is stated by the firefox foundation. Sadly, I'm not able to restore the image now, the software does not allow that. You will have to re-upload the file.
Please understand that we have to be picky about license on the commons, especially with logos. Thanks -- Duesentrieb 00:41, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

Hi,

PD ? Where do you see PD ?
Its copyrighted, for any use. I contacted one person that works on the marketing dep. of SAPO, and he told me that this image could be used for comercial uses by others. -- Get_It 01:03, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
