Who is "Nancy Wong"?[edit]

Hi Edmunddantes! Most all your uploads are configured with "Photo by Nancy Wong" (or similar, see also file title). Who is Nancy Wong? Do you, Edmunddantes, have permission to publish works from Nancy Wong here at Commons under a free license? For this, we need a written statement from Nancy Wong which will be processed via COM:OTRS. Gunnex (talk) 19:20, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

I am Nancy Wong aka Edmunddantes. I give myself, Nancy Wong aka Edmunddantes permission to publish my own works here at Commons under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license This is my one and only written statement which will be processed via COM:OTRS. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.92.245.169 (talk • contribs)

Pictogram voting info.svg Info Ticket:2014022210011738 is a record of verification for the above statement. Should anyone have a reason to question this, I suggest writing in to permissions@commons.org quoting the ticket number. This will help us handle discussion in a mellow fashion, and maintain suitable respect for legal identities. Thank you. -- (talk) 19:51, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Categorizing[edit]

Great images, but they need categorizing. i have been working on the category tree for San Francisco, and will try to get to your images. there is tool called "HotCat" which allows you to search for existing categories. adding categories which dont already exist only adds words to the file for searches, doesnt actually add them to a new category. If you dont have the time or inclination to do this, i will, but it may take some time.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 05:20, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Are you using HotCat for these? I notice you've added photos to slightly incorrect categories, which don't exist and show up as red links instead of blue at the bottom of a page (you filed a Willie Brown picture as Category:African-American politicians and Category:Mayors of San Francisco, California instead of Category:African American politicians and Category:Mayors of San Francisco). Hotcat autocompletes a category name as you start typing it, and you can use that to make sure you're putting things in the right categories. --McGeddon (talk) 15:53, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the OTRS-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Brutus2.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Dim Sum photos[edit]

Hello. You've been captioning the Dim Sum photos over at Wikipedia as "A [deleted] scene from the film", but the images on Commons are credited as "Photo by Nancy Wong". Are these on-set photos that you took yourself, or stills from the film that you've just accidentally applied boilerplate credits to at Commons? Wikipedia has to be a little more careful with the usage rights of film stills, so it'd be good to know which they are. --McGeddon (talk) 21:18, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

See above post. This account is by Nancy Wong. --Túrelio (talk) 22:07, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I just wanted to check that she hadn't accidentally copy-and-pasted "Photo by Nancy Wong" onto some uploaded film stills from Dim Sum, given that she's been captioning them as simply "A scene from the film" over at Wikipedia. --McGeddon (talk) 23:08, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for clarifying, and thanks for releasing a lot of great, iconic photos under a CC licence. Feel free to add as much detail as you can about the photos when uploading them - I noticed a few of your Dim Sum photos were just described as being from "an indie film" without naming it. The more context you can give to the photos, even if it seems unrelated to the Wikipedia article you're intending to add them to, the more use other people can get out of them in the future. --McGeddon (talk) 10:14, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

Wikipedia thumbnails[edit]

Have fixed up the Journalism image for you as requested.

For future reference, all you need to do to add an image to an article is click the photo icon (Vector toolbar insert image button.png) at the top of the edit window and fill in the blanks, or manually enter [[File:Yourfilename.jpg|thumb|Your caption]] into the article (optionally adding |left after the "thumb" bit if you want the picture on the left instead of the default right). That should cover 99% of the images anyone would ever use on Wikipedia, but if you need to do something more complicated with an image, the Picture Tutorial should tell you everything you need to know. Let me know if you have any questions. --McGeddon (talk) 09:17, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

Yes, that new edit was perfect. Thanks again for your contributions! --McGeddon (talk) 21:17, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi Nancy, the difficulty with a photo/reproduction of a newspaper page is that there is copyright for the photos (which were yours) and for the text. So, you need to obtain permission for the article either from the editor or from the writer, which would probably a bit complicated. --Túrelio (talk) 10:01, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Wikipedia account[edit]

Just a note to say that I'd strongly recommend you taking a moment to register an account over at Wikipedia - the fact that your IP address keeps changing means that you're likely to miss any comments people try to leave for you about your photos (I think I tried twice to tell you about the infobox template thing, without success). --McGeddon (talk) 19:32, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

File:SANFRANCISCOCHRONICLE.jpg[edit]

Commons-emblem-issue.svg File:SANFRANCISCOCHRONICLE.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.
Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

(Just flagging that one for deletion as you uploaded a better version a couple of weeks later and we don't need to keep both.) --McGeddon (talk) 15:57, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

I've also flagged File:MOTHERJONES1986.jpg for deletion - although I assume the copyright of the main photo belongs to you, the cover as a whole still belongs to Mother Jones and should not be released on Commons. You could theoretically upload it to Wikipedia under "fair use", but since the Mother Jones article already has a picture, there's probably no need. --McGeddon (talk) 16:09, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Don't worry, I'm proposing that File:SANFRANCISCOCHRONICLE.jpg be deleted and File:JOHNSIAS1999.jpg kept. --McGeddon (talk) 22:18, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Cropbot[edit]

Cropbot is a manually operated tool which anyone can use to trim a photo (it's here if you want a look) - in this case you can see from the picture's history that User:Andy king50 felt that the image needed cropping, and chose to remove the border. Commons policy on cropping is to remove "a border which is not part of the image, or [which] otherwise detracts from usage of the image under normal circumstances", but says to balance this against "a border that is part of the original artistic intent".

My reading of this would be that if an article was using your photo of Wang with commentary (if the photo itself had some historical significance and we were talking about that in the caption) then we should present it uncropped, but if we're simply using it to illustrate Wang's physical appearance in a particular part of town, we're more concerned about presenting the image cleanly on the page, and should crop it. Does that sound reasonable? --McGeddon (talk) 11:22, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

so as i was mentioned ,my opinion as a mass remover of borders in the past: According to our rules usually all fotografic images shall not have any frame or watermark. There are known exceptions for paintings, etchings, photogravures but not for photos. In some (quite seldom) cases a frame migth be necessary e.g. to illustrate the specific stype of a photographer in his own article or it is a well known historical picture known with this frame. For the latter case we should call for a proof of this claim. So i know an least one other photographer who basically claims all his uploaded images were artworks from whose his digitally included "signatures" must not removed (which is not our intention i think). There can scarcely be a balance against a "original artistic intent" not verbally expressed. For the very few exeptions with really justified frames we have already (the reason should be specified if not self-explaining). Then, until now there is no procedure to decide if someones photographic images are of so much artistic value they had to be treated as "artwort of its own" or if they are not. Hints for the first category might be if the photographer had own exhibitions in well known museeums or galleries, is representated in standard works about photographers etc. Normally the uploader should specify such in the image descriptions if he claims a exeption from the general rule on uploading, ore if someone wants to restore the framed version late it later to specify it in the edit commentary. Basically ist quite impossible to detect (on removing the frame) from a bunch of some 1000 images the very few for which some other user (later) claims the frame was justified for artistic reason. - Andy king50 (talk) 17:07, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
