Tip: Categorizing images

Hello, Edukeralam!

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Categories

Hi Edukeralam, please use useful categories. For images of unidentified plants like this there is category:unidentified plants. Note that category:flower doesn't exist and that category:flowers is hardly useful. Keep in mind that there is a project scope and that uploaded images must be useful for an educational purpose - what is hardly the case in unidentified plants and "flowers". -- Ies (talk) 19:50, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

Your uploads referring to India : Categorisation

Hi, as reported before, please use useful categories and don't over-categorize your images, i.e. please do not categorize your uploads (an example of your recent activity):

Category:Cherai, Cheria Beach, Beaches in Kerala, Fishing, Fishing Boat OR

Category:Cherai Beach etc.etc.

You'll help to save time and capacity on commons by categorizing:

Category:Cherai beach (and for example Category:Boats in Kerala)

Please use as far as possible the category of the regarding city/town/village or district (if there's no category) etc., or, a localized better 'fitting' i.e. the 'most fitting"' category(ies). Do not add - in addition - the categories of the "parent category", among them cities, states and countries etc.

Malayalam Chillu Characters

Old non-standard Malayalam Chillu characters are not supported by many mainstream softwares including Google Chrome, Safari and Various other applications (mostly build around webkit). Converting standard (5.1) forms to old de-facto standard will produce erroneous display on them. If your system suffering problems displaying new chillus, install new fonts or use workarounds. --Praveen:talk 14:22, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
