Hello, Ein Dahmer!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Autopatrol given[edit]

Commons Autopatrolled.svg

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically sighted. This will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to help users watching Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones. Thank you. File:Costa-Concordia-shipwreck-with-caissons-july-2013-1.JPG[edit]

As you will find on this image, this ship had been registered in Germany/Hamburg too, so the images of this ship have more nationalities. Unworkable to follow all ships and change nationality when following their registration. --Stunteltje (talk) 21:29, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

Hej Stunteltje, I know what you mean, but what is about ships that change registration with the same name? My suggestion is a new type of category like Category:Ships by former country of registration with following Category:Former ships of .... -- Ein Dahmer (talk) 19:45, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
I think that just adding the new country of registration is the easyest way. Your suggestion is not wrong, but includes a lot of extra categories and works out the same way. --Stunteltje (talk) 20:05, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
