[edit] Upload of your video file
Hi Eloquence, I would like to ask you how you could upload your
to Commons. It is larger than the 20 MB limit. I have a video file with Richard Stallman (20,07 MB/CC-BY-2.5), but when I try to upload it, I get a reset, not even an error message? Could you help me? Thanks in advance. Longbow4u 11:52, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
- You're the first to notice. :-) Yes, I've found a way around the restriction by using my shell account. I'd be happy to upload the file for you if you can put it in a location where I can download it. At the moment I'm trying to find a place to set up an anonymous FTP server and will then announce this option for others as well.--Eloquence 10:38, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

- Great. Perhaps it is simpler if you upload it yourself. Look at this website of the United Nations. The content is licensed under CC-By and the videos are encoded in Ogg Theora. I already uploaded the but I would like the Richard Stallman and Bruce Perens videos, too. One could use the file description from the shuttleworth video and only slightly modify it. This means a lot to me, as it is so hard to get freely licensed video footage of free software heroes. I hope you find the time, Greetings, Longbow4u 10:54, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Time to decide
Hi. It is time that it gets decided what to Commons accepts in terms of trademark restrictions, design patents, design copyrights, photographs taken when not allowed to (in for example museums). Since the foundation generally doesn't care, it is time that Commons settle these things once and for all. You should gather some people who know how Commons functions, or have extensive knowledge of copyrights, or those who speak on behalf of different fractions on Commons.
The question of trademarked items that aren't copyrightable alone is in a limbo.

Thanks for uploading Image:Alligator in aquarium.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. [edit] Flickr relicencing problem
Hello Eloquence, maybe you can help me. One of the images I reviewed two days ago has been relicenced, see here. I had left the advised comment to the author thanking her for the free license, but yesterday she posted a message warning me about the license change, so I proceeded to delete it. Looking for information to find out whether to change licenses is legal or not I found the following paragraph in your Flickrlickr page:
- Flickr also makes it very easy for uploaders to retroactively change the licensing of all their photos. Creative Commons licenses are irrevocable, so this has no legal validity. Images that have been "relicensed" in this manner (where Flickr shows a different license than FlickrLickr) can be tagged with Template:Flickr-change-of-license.
Does this apply to all of the Flickr images or just to the ones uploaded through a Flickrlickr account?. Regards. Anna 17:29, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- The original artist can change to whatever license they want, but since CC licenses are irrevocable, the community can use the art that they find under a usable license (by and by-sa for wikipedia). --71.250.49.200 14:58, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: FlickrLickr
When I did the bot run this time around, I included the FlickrLickr uploads. This stemmed from discussion on #wikimedia-commons; partly from a suggestion by Gmaxwell. Obviously, FlickrLickr does check the validity of the license and prevents truly bad uploads. However, I think it is worthwhile to review them as with all the other images (though with lower priority); for two reasons albeit relatively minor. Firstly, the flickrreview process is also supposed to check the validity of the Flickr image - someone could upload a copyrighted image which is falsely claimed to be CC-by through FlickrLickr. The other and more significant, is the Flickr user may not have intended to release the image under a free license. If it is reviewed and still free several months after upload, then they cannot seriously claim that; particularly as the flickrreview process involves a notification of the flickr user. Those two things together do give a limited benefit to reviewing FlickrLickr uploads; how much is open to question of course. At the moment there is no mandate to delete any of the images that fail flickrreview, images from FlickrLickr which fail are extremely unlikely to be deleted of course.
As an aside, I've been wondering about Flickr. Is that template designed solely for the FlickrLickr project or should all images from Flickr use it?--Nilfanion 15:49, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Bcav22
Regarding User:Bcav22, I already tried to explain copyright issues to him on pt.wikipedia, but he doesn't seem to understand the difference between a regular website (that usually does not care about copyright) and Wikimedia projects. Dantadd✉ 20:29, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Your opinion because you create this two templates
Hello, I would like to modify a template which is very used. It is Template:Creator. The goal is to obtain something looking like this test page => Image:José de Ribera 017.jpg. (the test template is here => User:EDUCA33E/test).
If it is visually correct, the goal is to show automatically in template like Template:Painting the Creator sheet (if it exists) with the corresponding artist name.
For example with something in Template Painting like this :
{{#ifexist:Creator:{Artist}|{{Creator:{Artist}}}|{-}}}
So before I destroy anything ! I would like to have your opinion...(even if I have to put this idea in my pocket.). Regards, EDUCA33E 13:07, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Irrevocable license
Flickr also makes it very easy for uploaders to retroactively change the licensing of all their photos. Creative Commons licenses are irrevocable, so this has no legal validity.
- I don't believe that's true. If someone mistakenly puts a CC tag on an image and then fixes their error, it was never really licensed under CC in the first place. Even if it is considered as such from a legal standpoint, claiming that we have a right to use such an image is not right from a moral standpoint. 71.167.67.240 02:06, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Hey, I have a video that is 90mb and I know it has to be 20mb but I feel it's really way more valuable if the resolution of the video is not compromised because it lowers the quality of the video a lot. It's a very good educational video and is almost made at a professional level. Could you let me know if you'll be able to help me regarding this? Thank You--THUGCHILDz 22:31, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
- Is it already available on the web? If so, at what URL? Thanks! — Jeff G. 19:16, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Eloquence can you please upload it because I have to send the permission email and that requires the commons link to the file.--THUGCHILDz 18:36, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
- While it is educational, I am concerned that:
- It is in a proprietary WMV format, rather than the open Ogg Theora and Vorbis formats.
- The audio varies widely, with the narrative explanation only on the left channel, and much lower in volume than the intro/closing music.
- There seem to be a lot of non-educational music and very short video clips thrown in, making what seems like 5-10 minutes of actual instruction take 23 minutes 16 seconds.
- You seem not to be very exact - the video is actually 90,151,583 bytes, or 86 megabytes.
- You can't upload it, or haven't yet.
- — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 23:10, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
-
- Yeah I know that, but I can convert it to Ogg Theora without a problem. I uploaded it instead of the ogg version is because may be there was another software that would make the file smaller through the conversion.
- Really? Well when I play it, it's playing in both channels and the volume doesn't seem to be a problem either. May be it's because you downloaded it from megauploads, but that shouldn't be it. I'll look into it.
- No, not really. The background music is mainly during the beginning and the end. There's also some during the video which is to not to bore the viewers out of there mind during the video. Also the small clips again are during the beginning and the end. It's a good mixture of fun and education. Boring education never works and if a encyclopedia can provide it the fun way than that's should be the way.
- Yeah but what's the point it's still over 20mb that's allowed.
- I know that is why I'm asking Eloquence.--THUGCHILDz 00:07, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Commons-license-selection.png.
If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-3.0 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain.
Thank you.

Hello!
Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. 78.49.12.124 09:39, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Flickrlickr usage of categories
hi there Eloquence,
just as a small feedback from my side to Flickrlickr, it should use categorise images only as specific as possible, instead of putting them generously. See for example here [5]. - Why did you change it?--Eloquence 00:40, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
- In Commons:Licensing : « Warning: The GFDL is not practical for photos and short texts, especially for printed media, because it demands that they be published along with the full text of the license. Thus, it is preferable to publish the work with a dual license, adding to the GFDL a license that permits use of the photo or text easily; a Creative Commons License, for example. Also, do not use the GPL and LGPL licenses as the only license for your own works if it can be avoided. » Am I wrong? Morgoth666 13:45, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

- Yes, you're wrong. The licenses are attached to the works that the screenshot incorporates - you cannot just change them.--Eloquence 01:00, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] PD-Art
Hello Erik, thanks for joining the discussion on the use of PD-Art. Just wanted to ask explicitly if you believe that our current policy regarding PD-Art is not in line with the goals of the Foundation? Kaldari (talk) 04:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
- If it's Commons practice to ever delete faithful reproductions of two-dimensional works of art where the art being reproduced is unquestionably in the public domain, then such deletion would contradict the longstanding Foundation position on the matter.--Eloquence (talk) 01:47, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Cartoons
Hello Erik. I have a question about free cartoons that are available from Blender foundation - Image:Big Buck Bunny Trailer 400p.ogg and Elephants Dream are two of the widely popular and freely licensed cartoons which are available in Ogg Theora format, but are fairly large (bigger than allowed 20MB limit). Do you think it would be appropriate for Commons to host them, or would it be useless and waste of our bandwidth? Longbow4u advised me to seek your advise. Thanks --Kimse (talk) 22:59, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- Right now, uploads are indeed limited to 20MB, and we've only made exceptions in a few cases that seemed obviously useful. Big Buck Bunny raises policy and inclusion questions that, to my knowledge, have not been answered yet. I think these questions should be addressed by the relevant communities, e.g. the English Wikipedia, where inclusion of the content is proposed. When we reduce the upload size limit, those discussions will start happening naturally. This is planned to happen over the course of the year, probably gradually, as we add storage capacity to Wikimedia's server farm. So I would suggest to wait until that happens.--Eloquence (talk) 00:53, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] FileUploadBoat: Double categorizations of "creators"
Hi Eloquence, thanks for the work of your bot! There's some hopefully minor problem, though: The bot seems to create pages/templates like Creator:Mary Cassatt, which are then used within the category of that artist. The result is that category:Mary Cassatt is sorted to be "in itself" (i.e. in category:Mary Cassatt). So either the creator page/template should be changed, or it shouldn't be used in the category of the artist (i.e. only in single images or sub-categories). As this sounds like a strategic decision, I wanted to leave it up to you and thus haven't changed anything myself... and hereby play the ball into your half of the field... yours! :o) Thanks, Ibn Battuta (talk) 22:45, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello Eloquence!
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Commons images are used by editors on many projects in many languages. Each image is put into categories. This helps other editors find them. Please add categories to each image you upload.
To add an image to a category, add the following code to the end of the page.
-
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbit of comets, add the following to the image description page:
-
-
This will make the diagram show up in the categories: Astronomy diagrams, Comets.
For further information on categories read Commons:Categories.
The CommonSense Tool often helps you find the best category for your image.
Here is a gallery of your images. Please check that each image has a category. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the help desk. Thank you.
