First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

I noticed you've uploaded one or more images and I thought I should turn your attention to a common error.
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Stare Miasto i Główne Miasto[edit]

Witaj!

Ani Stare Miasto (tylko z nazwy jakby nie patrzeć), ani Główne Miasto nie są dzielnicami. To jednostki morfogenetyczne dzielnicy Śródmieście. Przed wojną być może były to dzielnice... Druga sprawa: Te nazwy nie są po angielsku. Pozdr. --Starscream (talk) 13:55, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Likwidowanie kategorii, to wandalizm? Spokojnie. Mówisz tak jakby dotknięcie roweru było próbą rozjechania kogoś. Wszystko będzie jak w zegarku. Jeden z nas jest niemiły. Nie musisz odpowiadać, bo chyba sprawiam Ci ból. Po prostu chciałem zaproponować, aby najpierw były kategorie dzielnic oficjalnych, a w nich podkategorie zwyczajowych. Koniecznie po angielsku z racji internacjonalizacji tego projektu. Jak myślisz? Ilu Anglosasów powie bez wysiłku: "Wyspa Spichrzów"? Po prostu gdy zastanawiam się nad nazwą kategorii i opisem, pytam siebie: Jakby to zrobił autor przewodnika turystycznego? Co jest konwencjonalne w takich pracach? Lubię oglądać zdjęcia z całego świata i męczące jest gdy nie jest po angielsku. Wręcz smuci mnie to. To brak szacunku dla przedstawicieli nieswojej nacji. Oglądam budynek lub element architektoniczny i nie mam pojęcia co to jest. Jestem tak potwornie ciekawy świata. I dostaję lody przez szybę. Więc zakładam, że ci co chcą oglądać nasze zdjęcia, chcą wiedzieć co na nich jest. Jak się wybierzesz na typową ulicę Głównego Miasta, znajdziesz mapy i albumy nawet w czterech językach. Na pl. wiki na pewno stanowimy większość. Ale tutaj nie. A Twoja i moja znajomość angielskiego jeszcze podwyższa ten odsetek. Czysty pragmatyzm. Zwróć uwagę, że wszystkie grafiki swojego autorstwa oraz znalezione PD-old, opisuję dwoma językami. Porzuć idealizm. Pokaż światu jak wygląda Gdańsk. Pochwal się swoimi pracami i miastem. Zdjęcie jest opublikowane w serwisie gedania.info, w którym nie ma mowy, że zdjęcia są tam opublikowane na wolnej licencji, a więc nie jest zachowana kompatybilność z licencją tegoż zdjęcia w zasobach Wikimedia Commons. W takiej sytuacji istnieje domniemanie, że zdjęcie jest chronione prawem autorskim i znalazło się w Wikimedia Commons z pogwałceniem zasad. Są dwa wyjścia z tej sytuacji:
  1. Za każdym razem wysyłając zdjęcie, które jest opublikowane w innym miejscu, należy wysłać deklarację na OTRS, że jest się właścicielem zdjęcia i zgadza się na opublikowanie na określonej licencji, więcej na Commons:OTRS.
  2. Serwis gedania.info powinien w widocznym miejscu zamieścić informację, że opublikował zdjęcia na określonej wolnej licencji, która jest kompatybilna z licencją podaną podczas wysyłania zdjęcia do Wikimedia Commons.
PS. Wysyłanie zdjęć z dodatkowymi napisani jest złą praktyką, omówienie tej sytuacji możesz znaleźć na stronie Commons:Watermarks. LeinaD dyskusja 22:12, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please help replace this outdated license[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license {{PD}}. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding {{PD-self}} if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
