Please help to make your images useful![edit]

Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries) or put the images directly into a category, or do both. To find good categories for your images, the CommonsSense tool may help.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 00:40, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for this advice. Evstafiev 08:51, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In the same idea, I created the article Ratko Mladić, which gives an example of a possibility to sort the information. If you ever have any question, do not hesitate to ask me, this is the minimum I can do to thank you for your contributions. Rama 12:39, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Mazen dana with camera.jpeg rights[edit]

Sorry, I think Image:Mazen dana with camera.jpeg is on reuters Pages. I am intrested in doning a page on arabic wiki about Mazen. Is it your Image? --Tarawneh 11:10, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It does belong to Reuters, but in cases of journalists killed they allow the use of such images in order to better tell the story. Regards Evstafiev 11:47, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They allow the use under what conditions? Does this include commercial use and derivative work? Why is the image tagged with a CC license, who licensed it that way? Who is to be attributed according to that license? -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:00, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Have messaged the photographer (and Reuters) and will let you know soon. Thanks for bringing this up and cheers Evstafiev 14:22, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is the answer I got from the Global Reuters News Pictures Editor in London, Mr. Szlukovenyi:

"No problem - go ahead. Brgds Tom"

Subject: Photos of Reuters journalists for Wiki

Tom, would like to use photos of Reuters journalists killed in action for Wikipedia articles, for example here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazen_Dana

I added an image from a Reuters tribute webpage.

Can this photo be used for public domains? I would suggest using this kind of licence:

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/

cheers, M

Sounds good, I really hope they know what they are doing. Please be aware that only the copyright owner can license the image. It would also be a good idea to make very clear that the image must be usable anywhere, commercial use must be allowed, etc. We had several cases where people said "yea, sure", but where quite surprised when they found out what that actually was supposed to mean.

I suggest to thse this template for requesting permission: Commons:Email_templates#declaration of consent for all enquiries. We can hope that Reuters, being a major press agency, knows what they are talking about... but i'm not too sure. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 10:04, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again for your concern, but in this specific case - of using images of journalists who were killed in the field - any company, including Reuters, would do the same - wave any rights in favour of sharing the photos. Furthermore, these images carry no "commercial" value and are not hi-res versions of the original. Evstafiev 09:30, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright issue[edit]

Hi Evstafiev, there is a small copyright issue with some of your images. I noticed it when looking at the current featured picture candidate Image:Evstafiev-bosnia-sarajevo-shattered-mirror.jpg and some others. It's released under the terms of CC-BY-SA 2.5 and one can read your statement “I see no problem with my photos being used on Wiki pages, would be grateful, as before if the credits say "Photo by Mikhail Evstafiev".”. Unfortunately this statement is not appropriate. It's not sufficient, to allow use on wiki pages, but you have to agree to the terms of this license and therefore free use under its conditions. A statement like "I release this image under the terms of CC-BY-SA" or similar is necessary. Free use – even commercial use – is one of the premises of the commons. Please update the licensing of your images, if you agree. Kindly, norro 11:43, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I will look into it. Evstafiev 16:43, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Template:Evstafiev Mikhail has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Gallery?[edit]

Hello. I noticed that you had uploaded some great photos here and I have a suggestion. It would be much easier to see all your photos if you would put them in a gallery on your user page. It's easy, you just write <gallery> and </gallery> and then you put the image names (including the "Image:" prefix) between those.

You can see how this works on my user page, for example. Of course, my photos have much less documentary value than yours, but... :) --Matija (talk) 12:42, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Evstafiev-sarajevo-building-burns.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Evstafiev-sarajevo-building-burns.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

I would like to add personally that it would be a shame to lose this photo (it is an excellent one). Thanks in advance for giving it your attention - Gump Stump (talk) 21:34, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Let's fix this problem forever![edit]

Hi again, Evstafiev. I saw what you wrote to Martina Nolte, and I think you can fix this problem very easily. The problem is that someone else uploaded those photos, so they can't speak for you (they can't speak for you because they didn't take the picture, you did). The good news is that it is very easy to fix. All you have to do is copy and paste this text (everything that is between the "quotes"):

and send that copied and pasted text to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org from your e-mail. The e-mail will go to the OTRS (Open-source Ticket Request System), which is a confidential way to guarantee that you have released the photos under the licenses that it says you did. Once you do that, nobody will ask you whether the images on this list are yours anymore. In that list are all the images I could find that were uploaded by somebody other than you (those are the only ones that are a problem). I used the two licenses that you have licensed those images under before; I hope that is okay. Once again, thank you for putting so many amazing images here--they are excellent, and I don't want to see them deleted! If you have any questions, let me know. - Gump Stump (talk) 00:01, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Grateful your kind assistance in this. Have sent email. cheers Evstafiev (talk)

You're welcome! I have tagged all the images with {{OTRS pending}}, so that nothing happens to them before the permissions are confirmed. One more thing: I was fixing some of the image pages, and this, this, and this picture don't have descriptions. Could you add descriptions to them? Thank you again, - Gump Stump (talk) 23:57, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing this out. I have added the missing captions. Evstafiev (talk) 13:18, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, all the pictures have been confirmed by OTRS, so there shouldn't be any more problems. If you ever run into that problem again (someone else uploaded your picture so people are questioning whether you took it) you can follow that same step above, and that should take care of it. Thanks again for your contributions! - Gump Stump (talk) 22:11, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As part of the GFDL 1.3 license migration project, I've edited Template:Evstafiev Mikhail to mark any files tagged with it as eligible for relicensing under CC-BY-SA-3.0. As you'd already multilicensed the files under CC-BY-SA-2.5, I assume you probably have no objection to this. However, if you do, feel free to revert my edit and please see the links above for instructions on how to tag the files individually. Thank you for your contributions, and have a nice day. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 01:31, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good day Mikhail. There's a current discussion about removing the very select Featured Picture status from one of your image because it has a too low resolution. As you state it yourself in the image description, it is one of your favourite, and as for myself, I think it's one of the strongest scene pictured on Commons. Your image is currently used in more than 30 projects on all the Wikipedias, but it's a mere 700 × 472 pixels (0,33 mpx), so I think a lot of people would benefit from a higher resolution. As for us working on Featured Pictures, we would be glad to maintain it's Featured Picture status if you could provide us with a higher resolution format (as high as possible, but must meet a 2 mpx minimum for featured picture status). Thank you --S23678 (talk) 16:54, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I have said before that I do not distribute or market the high-resolution version of this photo. The size uploaded is large enough for Internet projects. Thank you for your understanding. Kind regards Evstafiev (talk) 11:18, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is, of course, my own creation. Can't find the photo on commons. Has someone deleted it? Evstafiev (talk) 11:22, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did. I understand that you are the photographer (it should have been precised on the image page), but the image had to be deleted anyway because the depicted work of art is protected by copyright and that there is no freedom of panorama in Ukraine. Sorry about that! --Eusebius (talk) 11:45, 14 October 2009 (UTC) [reply]

What does Ukraine have to do with this photo? It was taken at a cemetery in Moscow. Evstafiev (talk) 20:45, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Evstafiev. I see Eusebius didn't reply to your last question, but unfortunately there is no freedom of panorama in Russia either. Therefore, a picture of a copyrighted sculpture in Russia (or Ukraine) cannot be uploaded to Commons. It's unfortunate, but those are Russia's laws! Sorry that I didn't see your message sooner! I would have replied, of course. --Eusebius (talk) 19:42, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alexander Solzhenitsyn, summer 1994. Photo by Mikhail Evstafiev[edit]

May I use your photo of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, summer 1994, in a self-published book? I noticed it is licensed as a CC-by-Share Alike, but this book will not be a Share Alike license, though it is not likely to be a "commercial" book in the sense of being a money-making project. It's a labor of love, rather than profit. Would you include a license for a simple CC-by attribution?

Museum Use[edit]

Hello Mikhail Evstafiev, Thank you for sharing your image: File:Evstafiev-sarajevo-building-burns.jpg . We'd be interested in using this image in an exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Immigration. I'd like to see if we could get a higher resolution. Would you be able to contact me at the museum? Dan Conlin (talk) 15:47, 16 August 2017 (UTC) My email is: dconlin@pier21.ca[reply]

Hi Evstafiev, eventually you have seen this edit. Though I have reverted it for now, could you forward said permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org? --Túrelio (talk) 19:58, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
