Pregnancy pictures [edit]

Dear Ferrylodge! Apparently, it is a misunderstanding. I wrote as a source "Freely according to images at [1]", which means, that my pictures were inspired by this site and I took the basic data from it as well - I drew them freely according to the source. It does not mean, that the images on the mentioned site are freely distributable. The source was added in order to show, that the data (position and size of the child) are reliable. I know about the copyright of the National Physicians Center for Family Resource. It was actually the reason why I created my own pictures. My pictures are not copies and they are not derived from the images at 4parents.go, therefore they cannot violate the copyright. They are only basic sketches of pregnant women and one can clearly distinguish them from the images at 4parents.gov. I am pretty sure, nobody has a copyright for images of pregnant women.

I see that one of the pictures you took from the 4parents.gov was deleted. However, these images are a totally different case. Please, remove all copyright violation warnings from those nine images as soon as possible. Thank you. Miraceti 18:22, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Miraceti. Thanks for your message. These images appear to be what are known as "derivative works" in U.S. law. See here.Ferrylodge 18:37, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm thinking that a stick figure might be the best way. What do you think?Ferrylodge 21:54, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Aren't you afraid that poeple would think that the fetus is a kind of stick figure? I am not sure, if it is possible and if it will show something more and in a better way. Above all, I feel, it is not necessary. Miraceti 20:50, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Image deletion warning Image:10_weeks_pregnant.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Pregnancy images [edit]

If they contributed the images under a CC license, saying "This image is now public domain" is incorrect. They are licensed under a "free" license, but that's not the same thing as being in the public domain. You also may want to be aware that both the CC and GFDL licensing schemes require that copyright notices be maintained and under US law, it's a crime to remove a copyright notice without permisssion. They gave permission after the fact in this case, so all is well that ends well, but you may want to keep that in the mind in the future. I don't know off the top of my head if Commons has the same policy as Wikipedia, but on Wikipedia, we delete any "free" images with built-in owner marks if the copyright holder is not willing to remove them. We can't remove the mark, but we aren't obligated to use the image. I assume (but don't know) that Commons probably has the same policy. --BigDT 19:09, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. I have deleted the statement that "This image is now public domain" and replaced it with a more accurate statement.Ferrylodge 19:21, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you.

When I uploaded the files that I edited, I was following commons guidelines: If you modify an image of others, please upload it under a different filename and add a link from the original. Commons:First_steps/Quality_and_description#Filetypes_and_naming see here. I think I understand your position, though, and I'll gladly update all the wikipedia links, assuming my proposed renaming goes through. I feel the current name of the original files is a bit vague, and it wouldn't hurt to rename them. Also, in the future, please don't upload significantly edited images over the originals, and please remember to credit people who work on images if that is part of the license. IMO, there was no reason for you to have taken my work and uploaded it over the original. I understand why you did it: so that the talk page links on wikipedia would point to the most recent edit automatically. But as I said above, I'll gladly update any links that need to be updated on all of the wikis pending the outcome of whatever happens to these images. No hard feelings. -Andrew c 01:19, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
Andrew c, all Wikimedia images offer an option to "upload a new version." There is absolutely nothing wrong with the new version being in black and white and the old version being in color, especially when both the image donor and the original uploader approve that. I have no idea where you get the idea that this is against guidelines. The guideline you mention is discussing a situation where "you try to upload a different file type".
And no, I did it this way not so that "the talk page links on wikipedia would point to the most recent edit automatically" but rather so that multiple Wikipedia articles would point to the most recent edit automatically (and so that those articles would point directly to the information about who donated the images). Do you realize that your insistence on reverting to color images has resulted in multiple duplicate color images, in addition to resulting in color images in articles where black and white images had been agreed upon?Ferrylodge 02:32, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
I have no objection to giving you as much attribution as possible, and no objection to giving the image files whatever new names you think would be appropriate. I already thanked you here, and I meant it.Ferrylodge 02:56, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

I see you were able to convert a .ram file to a .ogg file. What software did you use to do the conversion? Thanks. --Arthur Smart (talk) 05:56, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

It was several months ago, and it was a total nightmare. Had to do it several times before it worked. I just googled around and tried different converters. Unfortunately, I've since deleted the links, since I never want to do it again.Ferrylodge (talk) 16:25, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
I knew it had to be too good to be true. Thanks. --Arthur Smart (talk) 22:33, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images [edit]

Hello, Ferrylodge!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
