User categories

Helen,

You might want to look at creating yourself a user category. They are handy to create a collection of your photos so that you can easily see what you have uploaded. You can see mine at Category:Files by User:NJR ZA.

When uploading a photo, you just add your user category as a category and all your photos will be grouped together. Just make sure to add HelenOnline to your category to ensure that it sorts under user categories rather than the main commons category structure.

--NJR_ZA (talk) 15:37, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, will do. I don't think I planned to upload so many. :) 15:45, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Autopatrol given

Commons Autopatrolled.svg

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically sighted. This will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to help users watching Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones. Thank you. File:45 Dorp Street, Stellenbosch.JPG

Could you double-check your rename request? On Google Maps, 45 Dorp Street has a house number on the wall to the left of the door, and 47 Dorp Street has a house number to the right of the door. On Google Maps, there is also a white fence in front of 47 Dorp Street. The house numbers and the fence are missing on the image on Commons. Looking at Google Maps, I believe that this is a different house to the west of both house 45 and house 47. Counting the number of houses, I'd guess that this is house number 37 instead, but I can't find any number written on the house. --Stefan4 (talk) 13:33, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

I am sure. We have (going east): File:37-39 Krige's Cottages, Dorp Street (closer).JPG, (41 needs photo), File:43-45 Krige's Cottages, Dorp Street.JPG, (47 not a protected heritage site) and File:49-51 Krige's Cottages, Dorp Street.JPG. The only number I can make out clearly from the Commons photographs is 43. There are eight units altogether, even numbers are on the other side of the street. HelenOnline 14:05, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
FYI I took some more photos yesterday and all the cottages are now grouped in Category:Krige's Cottages, Stellenbosch. HelenOnline 09:23, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Cat-a-lot

Helen,

I notice you are doing a lot of categorization of the WLM images. The cat-a-lot tool will make moving images between categories a lot easier for you.

If you go to Preferences, under the Gadgets tab, under Tools for categories you can enable cat-a-lot there. Once enabled you will see a Cat-a-lot button on the bottom right whenever you are in a Category page.

Help for the tool is available at Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot

Thanks Nick, I was wondering about that. I will have more time for tidying up now that September is almost over and all my photos have been uploaded. HelenOnline 17:44, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Hello!

Thank you for uploading File:Eendrag-bun-panorama.jpg to the Wikimedia Commons. I noticed that when you uploaded from another Wikimedia project, you left out some important information, or copied it incorrectly. File:Mandela Homenagem Joanesburgo.JPG

Hi Helen. I believe you incorrectly tagged File:Mandela Homenagem Joanesburgo.JPG as a copyright violation. The source (and even the file metadata) explicit that the original author is Agência Brasil (more specifically, one of its photographers, Marcello Casal Jr). Also, please keep in mind that generally it's good practice to assume good faith and let the uploader know beforehand that you believe their file should be deleted. I have contacted user High Contrast and asked her/him to restore it. If you still believe it is case for copyvio, please feel free to nominate it for the standard deletion process (and please let me know). Cheers! ~pikolas mia diskuto 02:05, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Pikolas. I apologize if I made a mistake, and I apologize for not notifying you (I missed seeing that I needed to do that). I stated my reasons in my edit summary which obviously wasn't enough. The Agência Brasil licence template is out of date, and the wording does not reflect what the website says about terms of use now. My understanding of the licence for this specific photograph still is that "unless specified otherwise" applies as the photograph specifies © (= all rights reserved copyright) not a Creative Commons licence. All of that may be irrelevant now though. HelenOnline 08:37, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
Hey. No worries :). I think I may be missing something here, though. Nowhere in the page does the agency specify otherwise. Please compare that page with this one, where it's specifically stated the images are from Agência Lusa or Nações Unidas (United Nations). But yeah, that's probably irrelevant now. I just wanted to understand your reasoning, though. ~pikolas mia diskuto 14:54, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
If you place your cursor over the thumbnail images, the popup title says "© Marcello Casal Jr/Agência Brasil" which is not a CC licence. HelenOnline 15:04, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
Ah, you're right. If you have a look at their image gallery, however, you'll see every photo popup has this © mark. I think it's safe to assume it's a mistake on their behalf, though. ~pikolas mia diskuto 20:01, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
I don't know why it is safe to assume that. They need to sort out their website for sure though if it is open to interpretation. Anyhoo, I think I am going to leave potential copyvio to others from now on. HelenOnline 08:57, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Zulu people

Thank you for this edit. I had to undo it, for the reason that the category is about Zulu people (=individual persons) and not peoples in the sense of tribes. Same is the parent category Bantu people: it is aiming at listing individuals, like men and women who are Bantu. Orrlingtalk 14:47, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

I admit I find it confusing – 12 other "people" categories are included under Category:Bantu peoples. Should they all be moved too? HelenOnline 14:50, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
Inevitably there's a mess (to some levels) in this tree :), I'm glad you were alert. It's likely that when those subcats were created they received the title "people" - without deciding whether its the top-category of the given tribe or a folder for the individuals (like Zulu people is). See my edit from now: what do you say about taking the other cats in the same line? For this, "Nguni people" for example will have to move to Category:Nguni (which is unreasonably still red!), and the same with the others; in such a way that no "Xxx people" cat will show up under Category:Bantu peoples (that is, subcats of Category:Bantu peoples should be only the plain name of the tribe, without "people" suffix). How is this? Orrlingtalk 15:04, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, works for me. HelenOnline 15:18, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
Should only named people (in categories of their own) be included under the "people" categories? HelenOnline 16:05, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
Not that I think so... as much as Category:People of South Africa or Category:Jews or any other people-category may include loose-images beside personality-folders.. Orrlingtalk 16:34, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on . Click here to learn more and vote »

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Photo challenge Proverbs

Hello Helen,
I just wanted to check once more if you are okay with the challenge theme or if I should change it to Proverbs and idioms (the distinction exists in German, too, but it's quite muddled - or at least it seems that way to me... but perhaps it's a lot clearer in English?). It's just - if we change it, it should be soon... Anna reg (talk) 10:49, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

I am happy with it the way it is (but I have removed the idioms examples for now and you have not put them back). I just think we should be clear upfront as otherwise people will understand it differently which is unfair. Ideally for me, we leave it as is or change the heading and description and examples to include idioms. I don't mind which it is as long as it is clear. Does that make sense? HelenOnline 10:59, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
It does - and you are correct that inconsistencies in the proposed challenge theme are a bad idea (which is why I didn't change your corrections) - it's just that I suspect that people will still understand it differently (in the worst case during the submission as well as during the voting)... which can still be seen as unfair. --Anna reg (talk) 11:35, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Wouldn't it be better then to include idioms and make it clear? I can look for examples. I must be honest, the Dutch ones posted seem fairly obscure to me. HelenOnline 12:42, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

I really don't know, as I can't say how it's used in other languages and therefore can't estimate if it will be a problem or not. But perhaps it's safer to include idioms. In that case I would be happy if you look for pictures, but I'd like to add the general view of the Dutch painting - it's quite famous and one of the first things that come to my mind when thinking of how to illustrate Sprichwörter (which would translate to proverbs). Anna reg (talk) 12:59, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Yes I was thinking that painting should be included too, with a link to the Wikipedia article. Will add some more now. HelenOnline 13:02, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
I just saw that you went ahead and changed it. Thanks. I'll just remove a few pictures from the samples (I really don't like the apple and I think 18 is a bit much - that's three rows on my computer! ;->) - I hope that's okay with you... Anna reg (talk) 00:32, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
I removed 4 pictures - in my opinion those, which illustrated only a small part of the saying - and the straw picture - that's where I'm a bit literally minded... - straw and hay are not the same thing! ;-> Anna reg (talk) 00:40, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
No problem, I just stopped when the second line on my screen was full. :) HelenOnline 06:57, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for your contributions to the Photo challenge project - especially with the unseen & exhausting parts such as categorising & checking submissions! Anna reg (talk) 11:02, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

I saw your comment(s) on the photo challenge talk page - and I'm not sure how that can be changed (as I have no idea if a warning could be installed), except perhaps organising 'shifts'... e.g. controlling the categories and theme for a week? If you have an idea how I can help, please tell me! --Anna reg (talk) 11:10, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

Danke schön Anna :) I have not been doing it alone and didn't mean to take all the credit for it. I think we just have to make the process more foolproof, as I don't see how volunteers can be expected to keep checking all entries in the long term. HelenOnline 11:34, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
Of course you are not alone - and you're right that he has also earned one (I think Llann Wé² even caught one or two of my submissions without category oops) - but while I read your comments on the talk page, I had no idea how to respond to them, as I can't really help with a solution (except volunteering to help). As I do appreciate what you are doing, I decided it was time to distribute my first barnstar... ;->
But I can contribute a bit more to further automatisation: as far as I know, Dschwen created an automatisation for the upload/categorisation (see here) - I'm not sure why it was not discussed further at that time, but probably because it concerns project background. We should restart the discussion - I think one of the main points against automatisation was that the challenges should be flexible. Perhaps we can decide that we are now ready to loose some of that flexibility in order to decrease maintenance work...
Anna reg (talk) 12:52, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks a lot Anna for the barnstar you gave me. I'd be pleased to participate more on this project but there's a language barrier 'cause I'm only en-level-2 and it's sometimes really difficult for me to understant all what's written in tyhe talks... As Helen said "I might need some help with the technical stuff" and for technical terms so I just do what I can do : make some suggestions and follow entries for cat's and dates. That's why I'm not so active in this project but I like the idea of the project. That's my contribution Smile. --Llann .\m/ (Lie 2 me ...) 17:27, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi! Unfortunately LGA is correct. The outline of the African continent makes it too complex to be pd. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:59, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
Hedwig, please help me understand (I am not being difficult, just struggling to get my head around how this works). Are you saying that if anyone wants to use the outline of the African continent in artwork, which includes all maps of Africa and globes and aerial photographs of the continent from outer space, they need to get permission from the IEC which was only formed in 1996? HelenOnline 10:21, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
This seems to be covered in Commons:Derivative works#Maps: "For example, an outline map of the state of Texas, or one of the US showing the state boundaries is not copyrightable. (Not creative.)"? HelenOnline 13:06, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
I don't think you're difficult. Face-smile.svg You know, sometimes it's hard to decide what's (c) and what's not. I learned (here) to go by can I draw this? The IEC is a South African Gov., so according to their (c)law it will be free 50 years after publication. There's a colored IEC-logo on enwiki w:en:File:IEC SA logo.png which is tagged as fair use. By all means, if you think there's a loop hole somewhere, let me know. I am more than happy to restore the file. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 17:42, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Hedwig. Face-smile.svg I am mainly interested in clarifying principles here. It is not the end of the world if we cannot use the image on Wikipedia, but I do want to understand why I cannot, otherwise I will never learn what I can or cannot upload here. It is my personal opinion that all the elements of the IEC logo do not exceed TOO and the logo would therefore not be eligible for copyright protection (trademarked yes, copyright no per PD-textlogo). I can accept the admins here may believe that the logo overall does (or it may and they just want to be safe). I would like to clarify the African outline element as a matter of principle though, as I do not believe it exceeds TOO. The African continent is not a man-made concept and a simple outline of it has been drawn by many people over hundreds of years, so I concur with Commons:Derivative works#Maps and do not believe the drawing rule of thumb you gave me (which is helpful for me for future reference) applies here and would like confirmation of that for future reference. HelenOnline 06:50, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
What I meant is can I draw the whole thing? You are right, it is at least partly playing it safe. Regarding the outline of the continent: For my part, I go with the whole composition of whatever is there. If there's an artistic feel to it, I lean towards above TOO. The thing is that there's no clear definition, only examples. In the beginning here on Commons, I tried to keep as much useful stuff (another thing that's a little ambiguous) as possible. Down the road I learned more about TOO and what's accepted here. If you think anything deleted is below TOO, popp in an undeletion request. It's a wiki, so you shouldn't be able to step on somebody's toes with do so. Face-smile.svg. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 21:57, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
just my 2c here, but as a common law country (in common with most Commonwealth countries) SA has almost no TOO and the stamp as a whole would easily be in copyright, you can (in my view) upload it to enwp as free PD-Textlogo with a do not copy to commons and it would probably be fine or make a fair use claim four use back on the election page to be sure of no issue. LGA talkedits 04:04, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank you both, I appreciate the feedback. Face-smile.svg HelenOnline 06:30, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
I assumed you already knew that. Sorry, my bad! Do you need the file restored? --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 00:42, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

/themes

Hello Helen,
I just wanted to point this new subpage I created out to you - what do you think of the idea to create a separate thread for the challenge theme discussion?
--Anna reg (talk) 11:24, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Anna, I think it is a very good idea. I think it might be confusing to duplicate existing discussions (not meaning simply listed suggestions) though, I would move them or leave them where they are. HelenOnline 11:50, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Sure - I just did it for now to give an impression how the page would look like (but without moving them as we don't know if that's what we want). I think I will ask for votes for or against the subpage and if people decide for the subpage we will have to advertise it at the top of the page and perhaps move the last discussions there. Anna reg (talk) 11:57, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Media viewer

Hi. If you haven't worked out how already, to turn off this stupid new media viewer, go to Special:Preferences, appearance tab, and, on the images section, disable "New media viewing experience".

One other way round it is to open images in new tabs by middle clicking. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:09, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Matt, I disabled it immediately yesterday. Thought someone broke my pc :-o HelenOnline 12:14, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Photo Challenage

I should have some free time to help with the challenges tomorrow. Don't panic. There's no law says the next challenage needs to start on the 1st or voting start immediately. The only important thing is we close the existing challenges/voting when we get a chance tomorrow. If you don't do it before me then I'll do it. Just need to make a note at the top to say the challenage is closed. For the voting pages, I take them into a text editor (notepad++) and strip out the collapse top/bottom templates to expose all the votes. If you look at previous challenages you'll see what I did. Anyway, if you aren't confident in doing so or don't get around to it, then I'll pick it up. For the new voting pages, I'll run my program on the existing challenges tomorrow to create them, and I'll also count the votes. So you only really need to worry about setting up the new challenges and making sure the entry criteria (scope, when taken) is clear. Thanks again for your help. Don't feel pressured by anyone wrt themes or rules, least of all me. Hope they are great challenages. -- Colin (talk) 21:03, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

@Colin: Thanks, I am almost ready for tomorrow:

 • New challenges are ready here and here.
 • Voting pages are ready bar last minute entries here, here and here (does that interfere with your program?).
 • Draft watchlist message is waiting in my sandbox. HelenOnline 21:40, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
I won't get a chance to look till later. The voting pages are such a faff to create by hand that I did a program, which also checks a few things. I hope you didn't spend too much time on them. The program-generated ones contain a few date details about the image and also have the author as an HTML comment (the idea being that we reveal the author then voting finishes). -- Colin (talk) 09:04, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
The new challenges are up and running, previous challenges and voting pages closed, and I have updated the main page as far as possible with hidden text where not ready yet (the voting pages are technically ready but you may want to redo them with your program). I won't have time to do much else this weekend. Watchlist message request not posted yet, pending voting pages being up and running. HelenOnline 09:57, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Dear Helen, once again in connection with the competition, somebody forcefully removed the competition category saying the picture should be taken in May, although the competition clearly states "Photo challenge/2014 - April-May - Politics and politicians". I've undone the the removal. Just bringing this to your kind notice. --Muzammil (talk) 18:23, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Sorry about that. It should be ok now. HelenOnline 20:06, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
Hello Hindustanilanguage. I'm really sorry I forgot it was on two months. It's a mistake, it's human, it's not, as you said "forceful removal"... Sorry. --Llann .\m/ (Lie 2 me ...) 20:18, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Tom Warder

Frederick Abinger (Tom) Warder -- the world's best known Hemochromatosis patient -- was also an inventor and a champion swimmer, who would have swum in the Olympics if WW2 had not intervened.Among his many great achievements were the invention of the "Gyroscope Brake" which was a boon to the airline industry, and an incubator in which babies were flown to South Africa for treatment by the famous surgeon, Christiaan Barnard. Another of his great achievements was a device to make things easier for his wife when she was in a 'body cast' for three months after spinal surgery...A device which proved to be a boon for many other patients. A consummate mandolin player, his band -- the Venturians -- was of great comfort to many during the siege of Malta. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 154.20.22.193 (talk • contribs) 00:41, 8 June 2014 (UTC) (UTC)

Hi. I am not sure what this post is about. If you want to create a new encyclopedia article about Tom Warder, that must be done on Wikipedia subject to normal Wikipedia policies and guidelines. This website is primarily for sharing images and other media. HelenOnline 11:07, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks again for helping with the challenges. I will run my programs to generate the voting pages and calculate winners tomorrow evening. I'll leave you to set up the new contests, but if you haven't the time then let me know. As far as closing the old contests/votes pages, whoever gets there first ;-). -- Colin (talk) 20:59, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Colin, the new challenges are ready they just need to be unhidden. I discovered several irregularities and notified 3 users who had not added their entries on the challenge page so will probably wait until tomorrow to give them a chance to add their entries. HelenOnline 21:01, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
I must admit I haven't been checking the category. I'd be tempted to give them the benefit of doubt and add the images for them if they don't respond. We'll see what happens tomorrow then. -- Colin (talk) 21:13, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Photo challenge translations

Thanks for your work on Photo Challenges and translations. How does it work when a new watchlist notice translation is added? For example, if we publish the English one and a German speaker sees it and clicks to dismiss that notice, will they get a new (more readable/relevant) notice when the German translation is done. Or will they have missed the chance to see the message in their native language? If the latter, then it becomes much more important that we arrange as many languages as possible before the end of the month.

Which reminds me that we haven't got someone to do August/September. Have you any suggestions for someone you think might be willing/interested? I think August will be a busy month for holiday photography (at least, in my hemisphere), so it would be good to have one theme to take advantage of that and to challenge people to take photos for the theme rather than just upload. -- Colin (talk) 10:13, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

I don't know but I suspect they will not get another chance until the next month. My preferred language is set to English and I don't dismiss the watchlist message because it gives me easy access to the challenge pages. Once the first translation is done, it should be easy to update them every month even if we don't translate the new challenge names. That is what I was thinking now doing the Afrikaans one. I hadn't gotten around to it earlier, which is not too serious as most Afrikaans speakers can understand English but I know they appreciate seeing their own language.
As for next month, I would suggest advertising for volunteers again and I don't mind what the theme or conditions are. HelenOnline 10:28, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Rastafari symbols

not all Stars of David and Lions of Judah are symbols of Rastafari Cathy Richards (talk) 10:05, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

@Cathy Richards: Not all of them are symbols of Judaism per se either and both categories are in Category:Jewish symbols, although they are all Jewish symbols or based on Jewish symbols. Nevertheless your response triggered something in my brain to help me understand better thanks. HelenOnline 10:39, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

Sandbox/Watchlist notices

Thanks, Helen!
by the way, I really like that theme... ;->

Hello Helen,
first - thanks for filling in the missing bullets, translating to afrikaans and probably checking if the translations work. I tried for some time yesterday to create a way to automatically translate the months into the correct language so that the repetitive part of the rules doesn't have to be translated each time - only to see in the end that that only worked for the first challenge... not sure if it's really useful the way it is... what do you think?
second - are the descriptions okay? I'd prefer to have a second opinion before I ask others to translate them (or check my French translations).
third - for the watchlist notice we just need to change the months and challenge names (which isn't strictly necessary), which should be possible to do as soon as the other pages are translated - or am I missing something?
By the way, I removed the category-sentence as Colin and you agreed that it means more maintenance work without advantage at the moment - no idea if I should create the categories or not.
Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 10:32, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

1) No problem. The Afrikaans ones work. Clever idea. Why do you think it only worked for the first challenge? It looks like it worked for both to me.
2) I just made some minor copy edits.
3) Yes I think so, except we also need to wait for the voting pages to go live before we can post it.
4) Don't worry about categories at all from August.
Cool pic! HelenOnline 11:25, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
1) Thanks. It worked in the end - but I first thought that creating one template should be enough and ended up having a problem with the time restriction (the sentence 'but may have been taken earlier'), which is the reason why I finally created a second nearly identical template (Template:Photo challenge rules restricted), even though that could be confusing. It is probably possible to have a parameter for changing that sentence, but so far have no idea how to manage that.
2) You found a way to hide that empty space between the list points! Great! I'll write to the other 'Photo-challenge-translators' that the new pages are ready ;->
3) Sure, but if we don't need to ask for translations first, we don't need a place to prepare it before we can post it on the watchlist-messages-page.

Holidays/Vacations

Hello Helen,
one more question concerning the holidays/vacations changes - I changed the en-gb in the watchlist notice, too - if you say that vacation is used in the US that's perhaps not correct and it should only be changed in the default version? --Anna reg (talk) 10:31, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

I'm not that clued up on the language templates but I don't think it's serious as British people will understand what vacation means. It's a word I would never use myself but would understand it in an American context. HelenOnline 11:10, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
I understand what Vacation means but wouldn't use the term myself. I'm fine with the "Holidays/vacations" combined term, though we can't use that for the page location as a slash creates a sub-page -- so best just leave it where it is. I've tweaked the English description to remove "just" as that seemed to include scenic photos rather than exclude. Are your other language descriptions similarly restricted? -- Colin (talk) 11:18, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
I have adjusted the translations accordingly. HelenOnline 11:57, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Helen, I've done the watchlist, voting pages, voting results and winners pages. Since 2/3 of the challenges were yours, I wondered if you would like to award the talk-page-banners to the winners (I'm out of time for tonight). -- Colin (talk) 18:53, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

End of submission...

Hi Helen.

I guess Uoaei1 changed the date because of an error. I've got that in French : "Le défi est ouvert jusqu'à fin Error: Invalid time., UTC.". I wanted to fix it but I didn't find how...

Have a fine WE. --Llann .\m/ (Lie 2 me ...) 15:12, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Right, same problem in German. Furthermore, the text Die Einreichphase des Wettbewerbs läuft bis Ende means the submission phase is open till end of, which is a different meaning than the English text, and is not suitable for a two month duration. --Uoaei1 (talk) 15:19, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know. @Anna reg: I have changed the code and the translations in the restricted template only for now, adding another parameter for the end month. It should be working better now. Please feel free to improve the translations. HelenOnline 16:14, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
That's OK Helen, thanks Smile. Fixed for French. But the sentence "Le défi est ouvert en août–septembre, UTC." should be "La clôture du défi est repoussée à fin septembre, UTC." to explain correctly. If you can fix that, I didn't find where/how²...
Tomorrow: pray for the end of all mistakes on Commons and Wiki lol² !!! --Llann .\m/ (Lie 2 me ...) 00:18, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
I haven't changed the translation as you suggested because it is based on a template which can be used any month in the future so it cannot be customised just to make sense this month. The sentence must also include the August month to make it clear at any time (now or long in the future) exactly what the challenge period was. I am sure the wording can still be improved taking all that into account. The postponement per se is covered on the talk pages (I will add a note to the challenge page now). HelenOnline 06:32, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
Works fine now also in German, thanks! --Uoaei1 (talk) 06:50, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Photo challenge - November

Hello Helen,
you probably already noticed that I tried to actualise the next watchlist-message in your sandbox (I gave up with the Hebrew, as I don't even understand what's inside the link and what isn't - but I did notify the user who made the translation). Do you have the time and motivation to do the Afrikaans translations?
The links would be Smoke, Leaves and Template:Photo challenge rules, as I added the sentence Please do not nominate lots of similar photos; instead choose just your best and most varied images. at Colin's request.
Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 23:37, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

✓ Done Thanks Anna. With Template:Photo challenge rules restricted, I think we will need to add a blank third parameter field or use the same month to avoid the current error message. There is also an error with the month translation I am trying to figure out, e.g. the German version says December instead of November. We may have to revisit the templates. I am not a programmer by any stretch of the imagination so any changes I made in the past may just have been a quick fix that won't always work very well. HelenOnline 08:05, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

There is definitely something wrong with the month translations (the first month is being moved forward one month), on both restricted and non-restricted templates. We haven't made any material changes to the non-restricted one so I suspect it has something to do with the time function we are using. HelenOnline 08:44, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
I saw - and I really don't know why. As you said, we didn't change the translation part and that's where the problem seems to be. By the way, I think I fixed the two months/one month problem. Anna reg (talk) 09:11, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
I asked Dschwen and WikiPhoenix for help. Anna reg (talk) 09:13, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, I saw that you fixed it! Thumb up icon.svg I think the MediaWiki time function template we are using may have been corrupted as it seems past challenge pages are now incorrect that were not incorrect before. Do you mind if I post a help request on the MediaWiki site? HelenOnline 09:17, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
No, of course not! Feel free to help. I just didn't know where... (and thanks for the thumbs up - I'm proud that I finally understood how to make a parameter optional! ;->) Anna reg (talk) 09:21, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
OK I have tried asking here. HelenOnline 09:27, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
It is definitely the time function not our templates (see test below):

Jan–Dec month by month output in Afrikaans: Januarie; Februarie; Maart; April; Mei; Junie; Julie; Augustus; September; Oktober; November; Desember.

= Januarie ✓ = Maart N = Maart ✓ = Mei N = Mei ✓ = Julie N = Julie ✓ = Augustus ✓ = Oktober N = Oktober ✓ = Desember N = Desember ✓ HelenOnline 10:07, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

To check if the changes are consistent between the languages (always the same months):

# Month af de fr ok code (for af)
1 January Januarie Januar janvier ✓
2 February Februarie Februar février N
3 March Maart März mars ✓
4 April April April avril N
5 May Mei Mai mai ✓
6 June Junie Juni juin N
7 July Julie Juli juillet ✓
8 August Augustus August août ✓
9 September September September septembre N
10 October Oktober Oktober octobre ✓
11 November November November novembre N
12 December Desember Dezember décembre ✓

I'll copy that to your post on meta-wiki. Anna reg (talk) 10:44, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Anna. If they don't fix it, Template:Other date may be a better option for us. HelenOnline 11:57, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi Anna. Someone kindly answered and explained we need to include the whole date (d m=F y) in the middle field to avoid errors. I think it is working now. HelenOnline 16:19, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
As the September formula was giving an error there must have been an error in the translations for the last 3 challenges (currently open for voting and entries) but I did not notice. Face-surprise.svg HelenOnline 16:27, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
Nope, the output would have depended on the current date then not today's date so maybe it was ok when I checked it. HelenOnline 17:32, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
Today is the 31st of the month (current day value). All the months with errors were ones that don't have 31 days, the function "fills in" with current values and was carrying over the number of days after month end into the next month. The problem with September would only have happened today. Face-glasses.svg HelenOnline 17:42, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
There's some mistakes for French : February > février, April > avril, June >juin, September > septembre, November > novembre. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Llann Wé² (talk • contribs) 17:56, 31 October 2014‎ (UTC)
The rules templates should be working in all languages now, as I have added a day=1 and year=2014 value to the time function. (It was previously using the current value which threw out the translated month output today for months with less than 31 days as it was using the current value of day=31 from today's date.) HelenOnline 19:45, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for solving that problem, Helen! That means the challenge pages should be ready - and there are still some hours until November left! ;->
Thumb up icon.svg back to you - Anna reg (talk) 20:06, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Anna, we make a good team. Face-smile.svg HelenOnline 05:16, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Kingswood College crest

Thanks Helen. The difference in the 'old' badge and the correct one is not so noticeable if you don't know what you're looking for! itis in the wings of the Wyvern in the middle of the badge. The incorrect on has funny little circles in the wings, and the correct one is clear and clean in the wings. There is also a colour difference. How do I send you/ load the correct one ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smutsd (talk • contribs) 10:40, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

@Smutsd: OK I will upload the one on the school's website for now. You can overwrite it quite easily if you have a better version (just open the file on Wikipedia and click on "Upload a new version of this file"). HelenOnline 10:50, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

Many thanks for loading the new image. Much appreciated. It is now the correct one. Debbie — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smutsd (talk • contribs) 13:14, 3 November 2014‎ (UTC)

Category:Tugboats in South Africa versus Category:Tugboats of South Africa

First:There is nothing wrong in a category named Tugboats in a certain place/country/harbour/and so on. These categories are basicly part of Category:Ships by country of location. But you redirected Category:Tugboats of South Africa to Category:Tugboats in South Africa and that is not correct. Ships are registered in a certain country and the category "of" is for all images of that particular ship. She can be in a certain place too and there go the images where the ship was located, not the category of the ship herself, as she can be found all over the world (in theory). So I will change the categorisation according the scheme as used for all ships. --Stunteltje (talk) 08:55, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

OK thanks. HelenOnline 09:39, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
