Could you upload your new version in another file? This new one's colors are vastly different and it has a lower resolution. It would be okay to have two version of this painting.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 20:04, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

Tagging uploads[edit]

Hi there, I came across one of your uploads and was prompted to look at your contributions. Some points for better tagging:

  1. For {{PD-Art}} cases, please use {{artwork}} or {{Art photo}} instead of {{information}}, and provide a parameter to {{PD-Art}} to explain why the artwork is public domain. Example: {{PD-Art|PD-old-auto|deathyear=1942}}, or for pre-1923 works, {{PD-Art|PD-old-auto-1923|deathyear=1942}}
  2. Please use Creator templates (eg Creator:Torii Kiyonaga at File:Torii Kiyonaga - Dream Symbols of the New Year, 1786.jpg) if available (and consider creating them if there isn't one).
  3. The copyright in a photo is separate from the copyright in the underlying work. For 2-dimensional works {{PD-Art}} covers this, but for 3D ones, the photo needs to be PD or freely licensed. I had to delete a couple that weren't.
  4. Please provide as much details on the source as possible - if the image came from a website, the exact URL should be provided if possible.

Thanks for your contributions; these suggestions will make them even more useful. It's much much better to get this right when uploading than to try and fix it later!

Also, could you add Commons:Babel templates to your userpage? This is generally helpful. Thanks. Rd232 (talk) 17:26, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

works of D. Howard Hitchcock[edit]

Hi Hiart, the works of D. Howard Hitchcock may or may not yet be in the PD, because if 70 years pma is applicable, they would became PD only at end on 2013. But, as US copyright is rather complicated please consult File:PD-US table.svg to assess the copyright status of each of the works. --Túrelio (talk) 22:06, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

In fact, some of these paintings were published after 1923, so they are not clearly in the public domain in the United States. I marked the post-1923 paintings for speedy deletion: they will shortly be deleted, unless you can show that their copyright has expired. The post-1923 paintings are: File:'Surf', oil painting by D. Howard Hitchcock, 1940, Cedar Street Galleries.jpg, File:'Menemsha Bight' by D. Howard Hitchcock, 1928.jpg, File:'Menehune with Fish' by D. Howard Hitchcock, 1936.jpg, File:'Menehune on Surfboard' by D. Howard Hitchcock, 1924.jpg, File:'Hills of Baguio' by D. Howard Hitchcock, 1931.jpg, File:'Pele' by D. Howard Hitchcock, c. 1929.jpg — hike395 (talk) 08:52, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
It's early 2014...so, can these now be uploaded as PD?--Amadscientist (talk) 22:01, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically sighted. This will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to help users watching Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones. File:'Portrait of Timoteo Ha'alilio by an unknown artist', Bishop Museum.JPG[edit]

Is this Haalilio or Kamehameha III?

The sign in the Bishop Museum identifies the subject as Timoteo Ha'alilio Hiart (talk) 09:39, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

@Hiart:. I assume you are a resident of Hawaii with access to the Bishop Museum. Could you please help settle this dispute on File talk:Young Kamehameha III.jpg (it has since been renamed from the one above)? Maybe a photo of the portrait with the sign you saw.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 04:53, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
It has been renamed because the only known published image of the portrait is labeled as Kamehameha III. But beyond that is the fact that the portrait is very similar to all known portraits of the young Kamehameha III. I have been doing a great deal of research on the Kamehameha III Royal Court as my great, great, great grandfather served Kamehameha III and Ka'ahumanu as an attendant and kahili bearer as well as chief of goods. While it is possible that the two simply looked similar as young men from a family resemblance (hey...I had those same eyebrows as a young man) the published information is what was used to relabel the portrait. I have contacted the Bishop Museum but will call them to verify.--Amadscientist (talk) 18:59, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
By the way, the source used to verify the portrait as Kamehameha III was published by the Bishop Museum.--Amadscientist (talk) 22:03, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
