Hi[edit]

I see you are working on some UK cats (which always need all the help they can get!). You may find my preferences -> gadgets -> Hot Cat a useful tool in that context (if you use such things). Regards --Herby talk thyme 08:02, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Licenses etc[edit]

Actually I'm no expert - I upload only stuff I've taken myself. However - looking at it must have the "author" as a parameter on the template & that is missing from the ones you have done.

Short on time at present but take a look at the pages (& any related stuff) and you may well work it out. Nudge me again if I can help but I'm not around much at present sadly. Regards --Herby talk thyme 16:44, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello, Hogweard!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi, Hogweard. Sorry for not responding sooner to your message. I just uploaded a version of the map without the names layer. It can be found under: 5th Century Europe Blank.jpg. Hopefully it will be of use to you. --Varoon Arya (talk) 10:28, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Image transfer from Wikipedia to Commons[edit]

Hello Hogweard!

Thanks a lot for your contributions! If you transfer images from Wikipedia to Commons, please use this tool. This tool retains all relevant information with correct sourcing and licencing. And by the way it makes file transfers faster and easier for the uploader.

Thank you for your support! Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 14:20, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Geograph[edit]

Re this edit which you have done to several images. You have created a second, completely spurious Geograph tag which puts the image at the wrong position in the category. Please do not do this. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 20:36, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)To be fair, he only changed Uncategorized-Geograph to Geograph - a legitimate edit now that it was categorized. The image was already tagged incorrectly by User:GeographBot - unless I'm mistaken about how the templating/geograph system works. Magog the Ogre (talk) 09:23, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

User:Filbot/Report[edit]

Hi, at User:Filbot/Report I see a number of files which I believe are yours - eg File:Egilsay Orkney.svg. These files seem to lack a license. I believe they were supposed to be PD-self, but I can't add the tag for you. Without a license, of course, they will need to be deleted... Thanks, Rd232 (talk) 01:18, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Please use CommonsHelper[edit]

Please use CommonsHelper rather than transferring images by hand. When transferring images by hand, you've been including the wrong information.[1] Magog the Ogre (talk) 15:23, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your note. I'll love to use Commonshelper, but it has stopped working; both versions. Maybe it objects to Explorer. Until there is a working version, I will have to keep doing it manually.Hogweard (talk) 19:25, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
Sure. If you want a quick and dirty replacement, tools:~magog/fileinfo.php. It has a bug that appears in it when transferring over image links, but that's the only issue with it; it works on 19/20 pages, or something like that. Magog the Ogre (talk) 21:55, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

File:ShannonRiversml.png[edit]

Hi, I'm afraid I haven't the original image. I moved it here from en:, when I was a newbie, and the original image was deleted long ago. But if you are interested in its origin or the first uploader, I can ask that to Retteast, who deleted that image (or I can ask another en: sysop, too). Re: Cartes topographiques des Iles Britanniques[edit]

Hello Hogweard. Thanks for the support and sorry for this late response.
Yes, for the Falkland's map I went further as I vectorized the altitude levels. This wasn't made without pain (a lot of work), but it was possible for that map because it was relatively simple: this is an archipelago, not very mountainous and I was able to keep the final file size reasonable. This would have been much more difficult for Scotland's map with its larger covered area, its higher mountains...
Note that even in the Falkland's map there's a raster layer: the relief shadows one. This one could also be vectorized but would make explode the file size if keeping a good visualization.
Since then and after reading a lot about the subject, I decided in most cases to stay with a full raster background because a map is meant to be displayed at a defined size (at its scale). If displayed or printed larger it may and probably will give the false impression that it is more precise than it really is.
About a United Kingdom's map, I'm glad you found one that seems to meet your needs because I'm very little active on WP for months now by lack of time, so creating such a big map would be very difficult for me at this time.
If you think about vectorizing a blank WP topographic map (like for example File:France_relief_location_map.jpg) I think you will face big difficulties because of the interfering shadow relief. In some cases (very few if I remember) in my svg maps with raster background the shadow relief is in a separate layer, so this will be easier, still not optimum.
I hope this helps. Greetings. Sting (talk) 21:46, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Cranfield.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. (You can get a list of all your uploaded files using the Gallery tool.) Thank you.

No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 12:03, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Church of England diocesan coats of arms[edit]

Hi Hogweard,

You have done a great job in creating quality images of Church of England diocesan coats of arms. I am attempting to secure images of all of these coats of arms for the table on Wikipedia:List of Church of England dioceses. At present, there are 15 coats of arms missing. Do you know if these images already exist in the public domain? If not, might you be willing to create images of these missing coats of arms? Any help you are able to provide in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Hogweard,
Thanks for the quick response! I appreciate the links and the explanation of your work in this area. Please let me know if you end up making any more of these images; I'm impressed with the ones you were able to make, and I would be glad to see the rest added to the list.

Help for creating a branching timeline[edit]

I am trying to create a branching timeline for merging and splitting of political parties in Sarawak, Malaysia. Similar to the one that you had created on protestant branches in Christianity as shown here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Protestant_branches.svg. Which software you are using to create the timeline and what are the online resources that I can read to create the similar timeline myself? Any help is very much appreciated, thank you.
