Category:Mountain passes[edit]

Hello,

Mountain passes are not mountains: it's the opposite of mountains. To categorize “Mountain passes of X” in “Mountains of X” is not correct. --Juiced lemon 15:51, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Fair enough. Though again, we could disagree - you noted that categories have no inherent hierarchy, but the one we give them. Therefore, a person searching for Mountain passes would likely suspect to be in the more general category 'Mountains of X'. Ingolfson 06:31, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
Category:Mountains of Germany is a category about particular mountains of Germany, not about mountain related subjects in Germany. A mountain pass is a way between two or more mountains, like a strait between jutting lands. A strait is a body of water, not a land. Similarly, a mountain pass is not a mountain. However, you can locate a particular mountain pass in a particular mountain range. --Juiced lemon 08:52, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
Okay, that makes more sense to me. Thanks for the clarification. Ingolfson 08:54, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Image:Jennifer-Hawkins-thermes-Cilaos.jpg[edit]

Cilaos is the only thermal place on the island. Thus, it is useful to have this picture in Category:Cilaos. As it is to have it on fr:Établissement thermal Irénée Accot. Thierry Caro 11:10, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

I disagree, since the image could easily be in any bathroom the world over (not claiming it isn't Cilaos, BUT). Therefore, as the categories should decide what the CONTENTS are, I feel this image would make more sense in a category like Category:bathtubs (which is what it shows). Don't feel strongly enough about it to start fighting over it, though. Cheers. Ingolfson 11:15, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
The picture is from an Australian TV programme called The Great Outdoors and has been released on Flickr because both this programme and Flickr are linked to Yahoo! Their page about Réunion clearly shows that the series of pictures I have uploaded from Flickr was taken on Réunion. Few months ago, one could even watch the whole documentary on the net, and she clearly stated that she was in Cilaos. Moreover, as I live in Saint-Denis, I do know that it is correct, since there is no other thermal establishment on the island than the one in Cilaos. Thus, she is in Cilaos and can be nowhere else.
Then comes the issue about whether or not it shows enough of it to be put in the corresponding category. I think that it does, since one can notice through the picture some of the old-fashioned walls they have in there. And we have no other image of the place for the moment. So, I think that Category:bathtubs can be added to the page but should not replace the other tag. Thierry Caro 22:34, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi there! I've now provided more info on this image as you requested. Thanks for the note, must've been some silly upload error on my part (it's badly named, too). New Zealand's correct! –Dilaudid 15:11, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Category:Marae[edit]

Hello Ingolfson - I noticed that you included Category:Marae under cats "Maori buildings" and "Religious buildings in NZ". I have reverted this because a marae is not a building at all. There may be buildings associated with a marae, such as Wharenui or meeting houses, but the marae is not itself a building, but is a space used for ceremonial purposes. Also highly debatable whether the buildings at a marae are 'religious' buildings, tho many marae do have church buildings associated with them Kahuroa 06:22, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

I stand corrected. However, the religious connection was based on me actually checking the Wikipedia entry, where it says "is a sacred place which served both religious and social purposes". Therefore, there seems to be a religious connection (doesn't have to be Christian after all). Maybe a subcat in Marae (named Wharenui?) would be appropriate which in turn could be in both in Maori buildings and perhaps in Religious buildings in NZ? Ingolfson 12:41, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
The marae might be sacred, but that doesn't mean the buildings are, so I couldn't agree with including wharenui in religious buildings. They aren't really - regardless of what Wikipedia might suggest - many of the Māori articles need a thorough rewrite - and that part of the article is talking about pre-christian marae anyway, and in Polynesia as a whole. Culturally important, yes, religious? I don't think so. Sacred in this case is a very rough translation of 'tapu' which means in this case 'must be treated with due respect' and doesn't necessarily imply 'religious respect' until you translate it into English! And not all wharenui are on marae anyway - some are in museums, some are in England, etc. I think leave it as Category:Maori buildings for the actual buildings, but Category:Marae for the complexes as a whole Kahuroa 06:38, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
PS I have created a new category Maori marae to distinguish Maori marae from other Polynesian marae. Kahuroa 08:00, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Category:Post[edit]

Hello,

This category regards any postal systems and related things, not only a specific postal organization controlled by a government. Therefore, the categorization of Post of COUNTRY categories as “public services” is wrong. --Juiced lemon 11:34, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

From Wikipedia:
"Public services is a term usually used to mean services provided by government to its citizens, either directly (through the public sector) or by financing private provision of services. The term is associated with a social consensus (usually expressed through democratic elections) that certain services should be available to all, regardless of income. Even where public services are neither publicly provided nor publicly financed, for social and political reasons they are usually subject to regulation going beyond that applying to most economic sectors. Public services is also a course that can be studied at college and/or university. These courses can lead entry in to the: police, ambulance and fire services."
This therefore can certainly be said to apply to postal services. Until very recently in history, most (in some countries all) mail/post was government-controlled. It was certainly regulated strongly. Also note the description given in Category:Public services to explain the distinction. I feel you are trying to narrow things down too much. Glass art in New Zealand[edit]

Hello Ingolfson, you are absolutely right. I simply forgot the link to Category:Art of New Zealand. (I did it in the correct way with other countries). So sorry. Will not happen again. See you--Gerardus 08:41, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Regarding Image:Eroded Road at Whatarangi Bluff, Palliser Bay.jpg‎[edit]

The *road* is what is eroded in that picture. I have uploaded another photo from the other direction and linked the two together to show this more clearly. Karora 23:31, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Category:Racing vehicles of New Zealand[edit]

I noticed your speedy deletion request on the category Category:Racing vehicles of New Zealand. I made an error on the child category of this category. I have corrected the error, removed the deletion request, and placed this category in its parent category. Royalbroil 14:27, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

While double checking, I notice that there is duplication because of the "of" vs "in" naming structure of this category, as found at Category:Vehicles of New Zealand. I always get confused which is right in which situation. Anyhow, please fix the problem if you are certain that you understand the structure. Otherwise, drop me a note to look it up and I'll fix it. Retail/Retailing[edit]

Hello,

In the English Wikipedia, Retail is a redirection to article Retailing. So, in my opinion, it's not a good idea to develop a structure from Category:Retail without precise definition of the term.

Note also that the categories “Products of LOCATION” are for commercial products, that is near anything which can be traded, not only for the consumers. --Juiced lemon 13:57, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

I don't really follow your issue with retail redirecting to retailing being an issue on here. If you think 'retail buildings' should better uplink to 'commerce of', I'd be happy with that, and we could dispense with a 'retail of x' cat. I did realise after a fe edits that there was a certain level of duplication there. Ingolfson 05:17, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
As for products, fair enough, 'products of' should probably better be linked up to 'commerce of' Ingolfson 05:17, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Thank you[edit]

Thanks for passing by my recent Flickr uploads and categorizing the ones relating to New Zealand. I am currently working on making the article on New Zealand an FA on fr:wp (fr:Nouvelle-Zélande) and have started a Wikiproject New Zealand over there, so I've been trawling Flickr slowly, going region by region, to add good photos to Commons. Please don't hesitate to peek at my contributions from time to time to recategorize as you see fit. Thanks again and happy editing, Arria Belli | parlami 12:15, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm watching all new NZ contributions - so if you want me to have a look at any new files, please make sure that they are sorted in at least one NZ category or subcategory, and I will see them (put them into Category:New Zealand if nothing else fits at first glance). Cheers. Ingolfson 04:39, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Thank you, it's very kind of you to help categorize! Right now I'm working on a biology translation, but once that's done I'll be back to working on NZ. Cheers, Arria Belli | parlami 13:08, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Glad you liked it. ^^ I was dazzled by the bright green as well. Ciao, Arria Belli | parlami 21:52, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
You may like this one as well. ;-) Arria Belli | parlami 16:29, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the hint - but I don't want to overload my user page atm with a fourth image. Maybe once I put more (text) stuff on it. Ingolfson 20:35, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
